Former England captain Michael Vaughan has been cleared of using racist language towards ex-Yorkshire team mate Azeem Rafiq in verdicts released by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) panel on Friday. The panel said it found the charge against Vaughan was not proved, after the case against him and five other former Yorkshire players was heard in London earlier this month.

Yorkshire and a number of individuals were charged by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) last year after an investigation into racism allegations made by Rafiq, who said in 2021 that he had been a victim of institutional racism at the club. Rafiq, a player of Pakistani descent who has said English cricket is institutionally racist, alleged that Vaughan told him and other players of Asian origin that there were "too many of you lot, we need to do something about it" before a match in 2009. Vaughan strongly denied the allegation.

The CDC said its panel "was not satisfied on the balance of probabilities" that Vaughan said the words "at the time and in the specific circumstances alleged".

The panel added its findings "do not in any way undermine the wider assertions" made by Rafiq. Vaughan, who played for Yorkshire between 1993 and 2009, was one of seven individuals charged by the ECB with using racist or discriminatory language. He was the only defendant who participated in the CDC hearing.

"It has been both difficult and upsetting to hear about the painful experiences which Azeem described over the past three years," Vaughan said in a statement on social media before the ruling was published. "The dismissal of the specific charge that concerned me takes nothing away from Azeem's own lived experiences... I have never wanted to do anything that runs contrary to genuine efforts to clean up the game of cricket. "I truly hope people can understand why, on a personal level, I could not just accept, or apologise for, something which I know I did not do... At times, this process has brought me to the brink of falling out of love with cricket."

The panel upheld some charges against former Yorkshire players Tim Bresnan, John Blain, Matthew Hoggard, Andrew Gale and Richard Pyrah, all of whom withdrew from the proceedings. Yorkshire and former player Gary Ballance were not required to attend the hearing after accepting their charges. The racism scandal rocked English cricket and led to numerous changes in coaching and administrative personnel at the club.

Yorkshire have admitted documents and data relating to allegations of racism were deleted or lost during the tenure of a previous regime.

A second-stringed Pakistan line-up locked horns with Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series recently, where the Shadab Khan-led Men in Green lost 2-1. After the series, a lot of questions were raised on the Pakistan team management for experimenting with the team as they went in with some inexperienced players and rested the likes of regular captain Babar Azam, Md Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi. Among the inexperienced bunch, a lot of eyes were on former Pakistan keeper-batter Moin Khan's son Azam. Azam Khan failed to get going and now ex-player Aaquib Javed has severely criticised him.

Azam had a good run in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 edition, where he scored 238 runs at 161.90, but fell flat in the Afghanistan series and returned with 0 and 1 before being dropped for the third game, which Pakistan won by 66 runs. After his flop show, questions were raised on his selection -- with a spectator trolling him for his fitness and eating habits during the second T20I -- and now Javed has made a big remark.

"I am not sure what sort of experiment this was. It's clear to me that no consideration was taken when selecting the squad for this series about what standard of skills and fitness levels are needed to represent Pakistan.

"If I was a player in that squad, I would have refused to play with this team. First, at least attain some levels of fitness before playing. Hopefully, they will have learned from this," Javed was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Pakistan lost the series opener by six wickets and fought hard but went down in the following game as well, by seven wickets, before playing for pride in the final encounter and winning it by 66 runs in Sharjah. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Azam, who didn't impress both as a batter and wicketkeeper, will aim for a solid comeback in his next series for the national side.

Another season of India's cricket carnival is upon us. The 2023 Indian Premier League promises to be an enthralling campaign with the introduction of the Impact Player Rule. We preview the teams ahead of the tournament opener between Champions Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings.

WION Sports Xtra: Who will win the 2023 IPL?

Hardik Pandya has been in sensational form of late. Over the past one year, the all-rounder has made rapid strides in white-ball formats and remains one of the key players for India in the shorter formats. Since his comeback post a back injury, which kept him out of action after the 2021 T20 World Cup, Hardik has been part of India's white-ball setup but is yet to play a Test for Team India since mid-2018. His last Test appearance came during Virat Kohli-led India's five-match Test series versus hosts England.

Ahead of the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition, which kicks off on March 31 in Ahmedabad, former Indian captain and Delhi Capitals' (DC) Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly opined on Hardik. He lavished praise on the Gujarat Titans (GT) captain but wants him to return to Test cricket.

'He should return to Test cricket because that's what he will be remembered for'

“There will be specialists in T20s. There's Hardik Pandya although I still feel he is an asset in Test cricket also and he should come back to Test cricket because that's what he will be remembered for. He is a specialist in ODIs and T20Is. But he is a very special cricketer,” Ganguly told The Times of India.

“I think money has nothing to do with how players play. It's great that money has come into the sport and that's how it should be. But I believe the majority of the players want to play all formats as long as they are good. It's terrific to see how hungry these boys are,” the former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief further added.

Hardik has so far played only 11 Tests for Team India despite making his international debut in early 2016. The 29-year-old all-rounder recently opined on his possible Test return when a reporter asked him if he will be part of India's forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final in early June, where they will face Australia at The Oval, London.

To this, Hardik said, "No. I am an ethically very strong person. I haven’t done 10 per cent to reach there. I am not even a part of 1 per cent. So me coming there and taking someone’s place will ethically not go well." He added, "If I want to play Test cricket, I’ll go through the grind and earn my spot. Hence, for that reason I will not be available for the WTC final or future Test series until I don’t feel that I have earned my spot."

'Hardik Pandya should....': Sourav Ganguly shares advice for 'a very special cricketer'

Shikhar Dhawan is in the last phase of his international career. At present, the 37-year-old cricketer isn't part of Team India across formats. However, Dhawan remains a big name in world cricket. He is known for his immaculate record in white-ball formats, especially in the ODIs, and for his positive approach and is a style icon for youngsters.

From his iconic moustache to several tattoos, Dhawan is a fan favourite. In a recent interaction, the swashbuckling left-hander opened up on a hilarious incident when he got his first tattoo and how he ended up taking an HIV test afterwards.

In an interview with Aajtak, Dhawan said, "When I was 14-15 years old, I had gone to Manali and had got a tattoo done on my back without informing my family members. I had to hide it for quite some time, about 3-4 months, and then when my father got to know, he beat me. I got a bit scared after doing the tattoo because I had no clue about the number of bodies that needle had pierced. So then I went and did my HIV Test and it's negative to date (laughs)."

Dhawan was last seen in action for Team India during their three-match ODI series versus hosts Bangladesh in late 2022. Since then, he hasn't been part of the ODI squad whereas he was out of the T20I setup before 2021 T20 World Cup.

So far, he has featured in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is with 2,315, 6,793 and 1,759 runs respectively. He has slammed 24 hundreds and scored 55 half-centuries overall.

So then I went and did my HIV Test and it's negative to date (laughs)." Norris accounted for the scalps of Ellyse Perry, Disha Kasat, Richa Ghosh, Heather Knight and Kanika Ahuja to claim the first-ever five-wicket haul of the premier tournament. Thus, the 24-year-old youngster from USA made heads turn in her first-ever appearance in WPL 2023.

The American cricketer is a left-handed seamer who has represented the national team in five T20Is. The speedster made the headlines with her performances in England's Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, where she returned as the second highest wicket-taker for the Souther Vipers in the 2020 season (accounting for a dozen scalps). In addition, Norris has played for both the Vipers and the Loughborough Lightning in the Kia Super League in the past.

At the post-match presentation, Norris said, "Delighted. Meg and Shafali started well with the bat and the bowlers executed their plans. It is amazing to be here and delighted with the win. The first wicket is pretty special and will definitely take that."

After DC's maiden win in the competition, skipper Lanning said, "It was a lot of fun, great venue to play at and the crowd was amazing. Great atmosphere. We were thinking about bowling but we weren't too concerned about batting. Was fun watching Shafali bat from the other end. It was a lot fun, we were smiling all the time. That's the great thing about this competition, you get to play with players you wouldn't have otherwise played with. We felt like it was a good score but it was such a good wicket so we knew we had to bowl well. It's great to begin the tournament with a win."

On Sunday (February 26), Isle of Man recorded the lowest-ever T20 score. The Carl Haartman-led side bundled out for a mere 10 runs in 8.4 overs versus Spain at the La Manga Club Bottom Ground. None of their batters crossed the double-digit mark with Joseph Burrows (4) being the top run-getter. From Spain's perspective, Mohammad Kamran (4 for 4) and Atif Mehmood (4 for 6) starred with the ball.

Former Australia skipper Greg Chappell has slammed the team for their performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar trophy against India, saying that the team 'needed to play to their strength.' Writing for the Sydney Morning Herald, the Aussie great also termed dropping pacer Scott Boland from the second Test in Delhi as a mistake.

"Australia needed to play to their strengths to have a chance of winning this series. Spin bowling is not our strength. Picking spinners for the sake of it is not the way to success in India. We had to pick our best bowlers and trust them to do the job and back that with sensible batting, based on sound principles,” Chappell wrote.

The former India coach compared Australian team's performance after the first two Tests as punching themselves in the mouth.

"It was Mike Tyson who said in the lead-up to a fight with Evander Holyfield: Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. My concern after watching the first two Tests is that the Australian team punched themselves in the mouth long before the first ball was even bowled,” Chappell wrote.

Australia lost the first Test in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs, while got beaten by six wickets in the Delhi Test, both inside three days. In the second Test though, Australia gave themselves a fighting chance as it become a one-inning shootout after India conceded one-run lead in the first innings.

The visitors, however, collapsed dramatically as they lost eight wickets for a meagre 28 runs in the second innings and went from 85/2 to 113/10. India's Mandhana fetches $410,000 at first women's premier league auction. Several of the world's top women cricketers secured deals worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in the inaugural Women's Premier League auction on Monday, with India's attacking batter Smriti Mandhana leading the way on $410,000.

WPL Auction 2023 Highlights: Smriti Mandhana sold to RCB for $411,000

Delhi Capitals have appointed Jonathan Batty as the head coach for their women's side in the Women's Premier League (WPL). Along with Batty, former India player Hemlata Kala and ex-Australian cricketer Lisa Keightley will also join the set up as assistant coaches. Biju George, who's the fielding coach of the Capitals' men's side, will also have same role with the women's team. The inaugural season of the Women's Premier League - the sister league of the Indian Premier League (IPL), is all set to begin on March 4 and the teams have started to pick up the pace in terms of setting up the system and structure.

Batty, who has been coaching women's team for some time now, is known for his vast experience and winning titles. The 48-year-old has won two women's Hundred titles, both with the Oval Invincibles in back-to-back seasons of 2021 and 2022. The former English domestic cricketer has also been at the helm with the Melbourne Stars in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) and also with Surrey women's side.

"It's an incredible time to be involved in women's cricket, and the WPL has the potential to transform the landscape of women's professional sport globally," Batty said in a statement.

Coming to Batty's staff - the former India International Hemlata Kala - an ex-chief selector, has great experience of 78 ODIs, seven Tests and one T20I behind her. On the other hand, Keightley currently is the head coach of WBBL's Sydney Thunder side and has also coached Perth Scorchers as well. She has had a decade-long international career in which she played 82 ODIs, nine Tests and one T20I.

Keightley had also held reins of England women's side, and under her watch, the team made it to the finals of the ICC 2022 ODI World Cup also. She stepped down in August last year from the position.

"I'm very excited to be involved with the Delhi Capitals and to be working with so many different players and staff from around the world," she said. "WPL is a game changer for women's sports around the world, and we have the opportunity to showcase cricket to a new audience."

WPL: Delhi Capitals appoint Jonathan Batty as head coach, Biju George named fielding coach

India had another memorable day in the first Test versus Australia, in Nagpur. After commencing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 edition in style by folding Pat Cummins & Co. for 177 on Day 1, on Thursday (February 09), Rohit Sharma-led India rode on skipper's 120, Ravindra Jadeja's 66 not out and Axar Patel's 52* to reach 321 for 7; leading by 144 runs.

Rohit resumed the day's play at 56 and went on to slam a sublime 212-ball 120, laced with 15 fours and two sixes. He showed grit, determination and class during his knock but could have missed out on reaching his ninth Test hundred when he had a terrible mix-up with his predecessor Virat Kohli for the fourth-wicket stand. The incident took place during the 48th over, bowled by Nathan Lyon.

Kohli nudged a delivery to mid-wicket and began to run before realising there is no run on offer. By then, Rohit had come halfway down when he turned and dived to save himself. Hitman was lucky that the throw wasn't a direct hit otherwise he would've made the long walk back to the pavillion. As Rohit survived, Kohli apologised to him to which the Indian captain had a heartfelt reaction. Here's the video:

Kohli-Rohit only added 16 runs for the fourth wicket before the former Indian captain departed for 12. He was caught behind off debutant Todd Murphy, on a delivery which kept low and was on the legside, but Rohit carried on and became the first Indian skipper to score a hundred in all formats of the game; fourth overall.

Courtesy of Rohit's ton and fifties from all-rounders Jadeja and Axar, India are in a strong position in the first Test in Nagpur. They will look to dictate terms on Day 3 by stretching the lead beyond the 200-run mark and go for the kill versus the Aussies on a tricky surface.

India found themselves firmly in the driving seat after day 1 of the first Test against Australia. Much of the credit for it went to comeback man Ravindra Jadeja who picked a five-fer and pegged Australia back. Speaking about his stunning return to competitive cricket, Jadeja said bowling 10-12 hours at National Cricket Academy helped him. "In Test match cricket, whatever wicket you take, you are happy with that. I was working hard on my bowling when I was in Bangalore at the NCA. I was bowling 10-12 hours everyday and that helped me a lot. I was working on my rhythm because I knew that I have to play Test match and I have to bowl long spells." Jadeja had been away from cricketing action since September last year after suffering a knee injury that ruled him out of the T20 World Cup. Before his return to the international stage, Jadeja turned up for his state side Saurashtra in the ongoing Ranji trophy. Playing against Tamil Nadu. the left-arm spinner picked up seven wickets and staked his claim to play the first Test. "I played a first-class game (Ranji) after a long time and I bowled almost 42 overs. It gave me a lot of confidence to come here and play a Test match." India and Pakistan now lock horns in the 22-yard cricket strip only during multi-nation or ICC events. While the meetings have considerably reduced, due to strained political relations between both nations, the rivalry remains spicy and intense on the field. During the 2015 ODI World Cup, India and Pakistan opened their respective campaigns against each other at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. In a one-sided contest, MS Dhoni & Co. beat Misbah-ul-Haq by 76 runs to open their account in style. Although the match didn't live up to expectations, there was a lot of heat and intensity between players from both camps with Pakistan pacer Sohail Khan and Virat Kohli being engaged in a heated spat.

The incident took place when Sohail came to bat during Pakistan's 301-run chase at the Adelaide Oval. As per Sohail, Kohli came up to him and started the war of words. Sohail recalled the episode on the Nadir Ali Podcast. He revealed what Kohli told him in the middle. "Aap cricket mein abhi aaye hain. And itni baatein karte ho (You've just arrived and you speak so much)." To this, Sohail said, "I was a Test cricketer back then. I had played Test matches in 2006-07. Then in between, I endured a troubled knee which forced me out of action. I said 'Beta jab tu Under-19 khel raha tha na, tera baap Test cricketer tha' (Son, when you were playing Under-19 for India, your father [referring to himself] was a Test player). That's how I said it."

Sohail then added, "Then if you see carefully, Misbah intervened and he got angry at me. He asked me to keep quiet. Then MS Dhoni also came and told Kohli 'Side pe ho jao, ye purana chawal hai, tu nahi jaanta isko. (Back down. He has been around for a long time. You don't know him). Kohli then went and stood in one corner."

Talking about the match, Dhoni-led India opted to bat first and rode on Kohli's sublime 107 along with Shikhar Dhawan's 73 and Suresh Raina's 74 to post 300 for 7. In reply, Pakistan never got going in the run-chase with Misbah being the lone warrior; slamming an 84-ball 76. They started off well and were 79 for 1 but once they lost Ahmed Shehzad (47), they never got back in the contest.

India went onto top Pool B, comprising Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, and the likes, to reach the semi-finals -- where they lost to eventual winners Australia -- whereas Pakistan's campaign came to an end in the quarters.
