Indian wrestlers dominated the proceedings on the opening day of their campaign at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 on Friday (August 05) as they managed to win as many as six medals. Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Deepak Punia won gold medals in their respective categories to add to India's tally at the Games.

A number of wrestlers will open their campaign on Saturday and will be hoping to add to India's medal tally.

India have so far managed to win 26 medals at the Games, including 9 gold medals. The tally is expected to go up on Saturday as a number of athletes are also assured of a medal but are yet to determine the final colour. While the likes of PV Sindhu and Nikhat Zareen will continue their quest for gold, the Indian men's hockey team will be hoping to secure a berth in the final.

The 27-year-old Vinesh entered Birmingham 2022 as a two-time champion and ensured her third straight CWG gold after going undefeated. She had won the 48kg gold at Glasgow 2014 and the 50kg division at Gold Coast 2018. 
 
With only four wrestlers in the women's 53kg division at Birmingham, the medals were decided through a single-phase Nordic Group system, in which all the wrestlers faced each other once. The group topper after the sequence of matches won the gold while the second and third-placed grapplers took silver and bronze, respectively.

Panghal, who is vying to win the yellow metal after his silver in the last edition, came from behind to beat an aggressive Patrick Chinyemba of Zambia with a 5-0 unanimous decision win.

Nitu, on the other hand, prevailed over Canada's Priyanka Dhillon as she notched a RSC (Referee Stops Contest) win in the minimum weight category.

Such was the 21-year-old Nitu's confidence that she played with an open guard, inviting her opponent to strike while using her straight jabs and combination punches to great effect. In the end, the referee had to end the contest.

Both the boxers will have to overcome local challengers in Kiaran Macdonald (men's fly) and Demie-Jade Resztan (women's minimum) in their respective finals on Sunday in pursuit of their maiden gold medals.

Indian Boxers Nitu Ghanghas, Amit Panghal storm into finals, eye gold medals at CWG 2022

Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women's team defeated England by 4 runs in a thrilling semi-final to book a spot in the final of women's cricket at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022. It was an epic semi-final contest between the two sides filled with a lots of twists and turns before the Women in Blue eventually managed to come out on top against the hosts at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

India also managed to break the knockout jynx in big tournaments and will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Australia and New Zealand in the final. Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues were the stars for India with the bat as the duo played important knocks to help them post a strong total on the board, batting first in Birmingham.

It was Rodrigues, who took control after Mandhana's departure as India looked in trouble at one stage with three down on 106 in the 14th over. However, Rodrigues remained in the middle till the end to ensure the Women in Blue had a fighting total on the board in the all-important clash.

Sable's performance in the final on Saturday has been hailed as one of the best by an Indian track athlete in the history of the Games as he managed to outclass his Kenyan opponents, who were arguably the favourites to take all three spots on the podium.

India's medal rush continued at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 on Wednesday (August 03) as squash player Saurav Ghosal scripted history. Ghosal became the first-ever Indian to win an individual&nbsp;medal in squash in the history of the Commonwealth Games after defeating England's James Willstrop in the men's singles bronze medal match.

Ghosal along with Joshna Chinappa has been among India's top stars in squash and had been gunning for a historic singles medal in this year's edition. He finally managed to bring an end to a long wait on Wednesday after getting the better of Willstrop.

Odds were against Ghosal in the bronze medal match against Willstrop, who was the defending champion at the Commonwealth Games this year having won the gold medal in Gold Coast four years back. However, he came up with a brilliant performance to win 33 points and clinch India's first-ever individual medal in the sport at the Games.

35-year-old Ghosal defeated Willstrop 3-0 in the crucial game. Ghosal was on top of his game right from the start of the bronze medal clash as he won the first game 11-6 before beating Willstrop 11-1, 11-4 in the next two games to secure a convincing 3-0 victory.

Kidambi Srikanth came up with an underwhelming performance as India succumbed 1-3 to Malaysia and settled for a silver in the mixed team badminton event at the Commonwealth Games here on Tuesday.

Srikanth lost to lower-ranked Tze Yong Ng in three games to put the defending champions on the backfoot in the final.

PV Sindhu did what was expected out of her in the women's singles while the men's doubles pairing of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty went down in the opening doubles.

With the win, Malaysia regained the title they had lost to India four years ago in Gold Coast.

For India to retain gold, a lot depended on the outcome of the men's doubles tie featuring Rankireddy and Shetty, and, the Olympic bronze medallists duo of Teng Fong Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh.

The women's doubles and mixed doubles were India's weaker links and the team relied on men's doubles and the two singles to get the job done.

The opening contest was full of long and winding rallies but Reddy and Shetty lost majority of them, failing to keep pace with the ultra attacking Malaysian pair.

For a change, the Malaysian crowd made more noise than the Indians, providing a further push to Chia and Soh. After a tough battle, the Malaysians won 21-18, 21-15 to put their team 1-0 up

In the women's singles, two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu was expected to win comfortably but the 60-th ranked Goh Jin Wei made life very tough for the world number 7.

Sindhu led 11-6 in the first game but Goh looked a different player after the interval. She made the former world champion run around the court with her skillful net play. Goh made a strong comeback to take the game till the very end.

Sindhu ended a rally with a forehand smash on Goh's left to make it 21-20 before the Malaysian netted a return. 
Goh's continued with similar tactics in the second game as well, trying to bring Sindhu close to the net. However, Sindhu was up for the task as she took an 11-7 lead in the second game.

Goh closed the gap after the interval but Sindhu was able to finish the game comfortably on this occasion. It was a gruelling affair and Goh gave her all on court including the last point when she fell on the floor. The final scoreline read 22-20 and 21-17

India settles for silver in mixed team badminton at Commonwealth Games 2022

Harmanpreet Singh and Akashdeep Singh scored a brace each as the Indian men's hockey team produced a completely dominating performance to rout Canada 8-0 in their third match and jump to the top of Pool B at the Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday.

Harmanpreet (7th, 54th minute) converted two penalty corners while Akashdeep Singh (38th, 60th) scored two fine field goals. Amit Rohidas (10th), Lalit Upadhyay (20th), Gurjant Singh (27th) and Mandeep Singh (58th) were the other goal scorers for India.

With the win, India jumped to the top of the pool ahead of England. The Indians play Wales in their final group match on Thursday. The Indians recovered from the jolt of a 4-4 draw against England after leading 3-0 at one stage in their last match as they came out with more purpose and completely dominated Canada in the first two quarters.

India's first scoring chance came in the fifth minute in the form of back-to-back penalty corners but Canada's Balraj Panesar made a goal-line save to deny Harmanpreet from the second attempt. But Harmanpreet was not to be denied much longer as she gave India the lead two minutes later with a powerful drag-flick from another set piece.

Three minutes later, defender Rohidas scored a brilliant field goal. He stormed into the circle with his silky stick work and slotted the ball home after receiving a defence-splitting long ball from Varun Kumar. Satwik revealed Treesa and Gayatri were also disappointed after their loss and cried. The Indian star, however, said the final loss was not the end of the road for Indian shuttlers at CWG 2022 a they will now hope to do well in the singles and doubles events at the Games.

“Gayatri and Treesa were very disappointed after their loss and Treesa cried too. I’m happy that the pain was there. This has really fired us up, especially Chirag and Srikanth Anna.
