But the Englishmen came out hard in the final two quarters to stun the Indians. With less than three minutes remaining from the first quarter, India mounted a counter-attack and Nilakanta Sharma beautifully laid it up for Mandeep, who used his experience to slot home the ball with a brilliant reverse hit to hand India a 2-0 lead.

The Indians continued to dominate the proceedings in the second quarter and mounted attacks after attacks on the English citadel. Mandeep extended India's lead in the 22nd minute when he brilliantly spun to shot towards the goal, and the ball went in after getting a deflection from an English defender.

Indian women's lawn bowls team created history at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Tuesday as they clinched the country's first-ever gold medal in the sport. Twitter was flooded with congratulatory wishes for the Indian&nbsp;quartet of&nbsp;Lovely Choubey, Pinki Singh,&nbsp;Rupa Rani Tirkey and&nbsp;Nayanmoni Saikia who beat South Africa in the women's fours final.

India defeated South Africa 17-10 in the final of the women's fours event to script a historic feat at the Games. It was a thrilling final marginally dominated by India right from start to end. The Indian women's team made an emphatic start and took a 5-point lead at 7-2 after the conclusion of End 7.

India looked in sublime control in the final with a 5-point lead but South Africa made a brilliant comeback as they led 10-8 by the conclusion of the End 11. With three more Ends to go, the pressure was on the Indian team but they secured successive points to make it 12-10 before winning three points in End 14. The Indian women's fours lawn bowls team created history at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 on Monday (August 01) as they secured the country's first-ever medal in the sport at the Games. India had never won a medal in Lawn Bowls despite it being one of the oldest games in the history of the Commonwealth Games. The sport has traditionally been dominated by England and Scotland.

However, India have now booked their first medal in lawn bowls after defeating New Zealand in the semi-final of the women's fours event at the Leamington Spa in Birmingham on Monday. India got the better of New Zealand 13-16 in the semi-final to enter the final where they will face South Africa in the gold medal match.

The Indian women's fours team of Lovely Choubey, Nayanmoni Saikia, Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey produced a brilliant effort in the semis against New Zealand to enter the final. Talking about the young sensation Lalrinnunga, the 19-year-old broke the CWG record in the men's 67kg category by lifting 140kgs in snatch and 160kgs in clean and jerk to&nbsp;become only the&nbsp;second Indian weightlifter to clinch the medal. Meanwhile, Samoa's Vaipava Ioane ended at the&nbsp;second spot with lifts of 127 and 166 kgs in the two rounds.

During the medal ceremony, Vaipava's special gesture for Jeremy made heads turn. Loane gifted his traditional Samoan garland to Jeremy and hugged the Indian teen sensation&nbsp;tightly.

Gee and Isle of Man's cyclist Matthew Bostock also followed suit. Meanwhile, a couple of spectators also got injured. However, none of them&nbsp;required&nbsp;hospitalisation and, thus, escaped suffering major injuries. Canada's Mathias Guilemette, on the other hand, was disqualified for causing the scary crash.

Indian star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu scripted history at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday as she clinched the gold medal in the women’s 49kg category by setting a new Games record in both snatch and clean and jerk rounds of her final. It was a cakewalk to the gold medal for Chanu, who had absolutely no challengers in the final as she lifted 88 kg in snatch and followed it up with 113 kg in the clean and jerk round to lift 201 kg overall and finish on top of the podium.

Chanu&nbsp;headed into the 49kg women’s weightlifting contest as the defending champion having won the gold medal in the same category at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in 2018. She was in a league of her own as she successfully defended her title with ease to live up to her favourite tag at the showpiece event.

It was a flawless performance from the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist in the 49 kg category as she started off by successfully lifting 84kg in her first attempt in the snatch round to set a Commonwealth Games record. However, the 27-year-old didn’t stop there and went on to better her lift to 88 kg in her second snatch attempt.

The Indian men's hockey team decimated lowly Ghana 11-0 in its opening Pool B match of the Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. As expected, the Indians were relentless in their attacks and completely controlled the proceedings from start to finish.

The Indians played to their strength and scored five in the first half before pumping in four and two goals in the last two quarters. India converted six out of 13 penalty corners they earned in the match.

Lalrinnunga went for a solid 140 kg lift in the snatch round and managed to successfully pull it off to gain a healthy lead of 10 kg over his nearest rival in the final ahead of the clean and jerk round. He ended up getting injured during the clean and jerk round but managed to lift an impressive 160 kg to finish on top of the podium.

Lalrinnunga also suffered from muscle cramps during the final but battled them to emerge victorious. He attempted to lift 165 kg in the clean and jerk round but ended up failing after suffering a muscle cramp. The 19-year-old was seen reeling in pain as he went down on the floor.

Samoa’s Vaipava Ione finished second behind Larinnunga with 293 kg overall to bag silver while Nigeria’s Edidong Umoafia won the bronze medal with a total lift of 290 kg in the men's 67kg category on Sunday. India's weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu lived up to her favourite tag at the Commonwealth Games 2022 as she clinched an elusive gold medal in the women's 49kg category on Saturday (July 30). Chanu bagged India's first gold medal at the mega event after dominating the proceedings in the 49kg final. She lifted a record 201 kg overall to set a Games record and successfully defend her title.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist had won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia and was one of the favourites to win the title once again this year. She came up with a flawless display in the final by lifting a record 88kg in the snatch round before lifting 113 kg in the clean and jerk round to finish on top of the podium.

Her 88 kg lift in the snatch was also Chanu's personal best and was 12 kg more than her nearest rival in the snatch round at the final on Saturday. The 27-year-old was in a league of her own as she completely dominated the event on her way to gold.

Reacting after her fabulous lop-sided victory, Chanu said she felt her competition was not against her opponents in the final but herself. The Indian star weightlifter also stated how Commonwealth Games has been easy for her and she wanted to match her personal best at the event which she successfully managed to pull off.

“It was not a competition against the other opponents, and I was only competing with myself and did not have to fight much. Everybody knows that the Commonwealth Games is easy for me but I wanted to give it my personal best,” Chanu told India Today after clinching gold at the CWG 2022.

Chanu had gone for a 90 kg lift in her third attempt during the snatch round on Saturday but failed to pull it off. The Indian weightlifter revealed she has been able to lift 90 kg during training but it didn't come off on Saturday. However, the newly-crowned gold medallist said she was happy with her effort at the Games this year.

“My target in this competition was to better my ‘snatch’ game, since it is a weak point of mine. So, after we came back from Tokyo, we worked a lot on it. I am very happy that I was able to touch 88kgs. I have touched 90 in practice, but it did not happen today. However, I am very happy with my performance,” said Chanu.

Indian shuttlers dished out another splendid show to outclass Sri Lanka 5-0 in their second group A match of the mixed team competition at the 22nd Commonwealth Games here on Saturday. India were by far the better team on display as they completely dominated the proceedings at the Arena Birmingham.

A day after blanking Pakistan 5-0, India notched up another convincing win to go top of group A and qualify for the quarterfinals with one tie still remaining in the league stage of the competition. India made a strategic decision to split the mixed and men's doubles pairing as Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were back together for the opening match.

The former world number 19 pair looked rusty initially before getting past Sachin Dias and Thilini Hendahewa 21-14 21-9 to put India 1-0 ahead.

World Championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen, who is playing his first match after recovering from a shoulder injury, prevailed 21-18 21-5 over veteran Niluka Karunatne, who has competed at the Olympics in 2012, 2016 and 2020.

Akarshi Kashyap, who had made it to the team after topping the selection trials in April, went past Vidara Suhasni Vidanage 21-3 21-9 in the women's singles to hand India an unassailable 3-0 lead.

The men's singles competition is a competitive field comprising three world championships medallist. While Sen and compatriot Kidamdi Srikanth are the bronze and silver winners, Singapore's Loh Kean Yew, who had emerged as the champion, is also in the field.

"That gives you a lot of confidence to come to this tournament but the environment here, the atmosphere in the hall, the fans, this is a totally different experience and I will learn from this event," he said.

"This is a great tournament to play before the world championships (in August 2022)."

The Indian team will face Australia in its final league group match later in the day.

"The team is looking really strong. We have really good players at the top and to back up that we have a really good bench as well. In the men's, winning the Thomas Cup (in May) shows how deep the bench is."

Weightlifter Sanket Sargar opened India's medal account at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday (July 30) by clinching a silver medal in the men's 55kg category. Sargar finished second behind Malaysia's Bin Kasdan Mohammad Aniq in the final and missed out on the elusive gold medal by just 1 kg. It was a thrilling finish to the final as Sargar didn't deter from his last attempt despite an injury.

The 21-year-old Indian looked on course to win a gold medal, but an injury during his second attempt in the clean and jerk round saw him finish second. Nonetheless, Sargar managed to clinch India's first medal at the Games this year and earned praise from all corners.

He attained a healthy lead of 6 kg against Aniq by lifting 113 kg in his final third snatch attempt to head to the clean and jerk event with some advantage.
