BTS performed their latest song ‘Permission to Dance’, albeit it was pre-recorded in the halls of UN and was showcased to policymakers and politicians from around the world. The group then returned to New York to attend this year’s session as the special presidential envoy for future generations and culture.

Commenting on this trip, James Corden joked, “The United Nations General Assembly kicked off this morning in New York City, and it started with some pretty unusual visitors… BTS were there. BTS visited the UN… Although lots of people are saying why are BTS there, the world leaders have no choice but to take BTS seriously. BTS has one of the largest ARMY on the planet earth. Historic moment. It actually marks the first time that 15 year old girls everywhere found themselves wishing that they were Secretary General António Guterres."

Referring to BTS fans as “15-year-olds” and “unusual visitors” did not sit well with the ARMY who took to Twitter to express their anger.

The band spoke about their experiences as part of the younger generation, and how their views about their future paths were being shaped by the pandemic.

Korean boyband BTS addressed the 76th UN General Assembly on Monday in New York. The K-pop band considered as youth icons all over the world spoke on climate change, sustainability and growth, challenges they faced amid the pandemic and why they felt the youth had the ability to forge ahead despite those challenges.

BTS was appointed 'Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture' last week by South Korea's president.

Here are the key highlights of their speech

Everyone agrees that climate change is an important problem but talking about what the best solution might be, that's not easy. It's a topic that is tough to make conclusions about.

There were times during the past two years when we too felt bewildered and troubled, but still, we had people who cried out "let's live on, let's make the best of this moment."

Sometimes it feels like the world is stuck in place. It feels like if you've lost your way. There was a time when we felt the same way.

I hope we just don't consider the future as grim darkness. We have people concerned for the world and searching for answers. There are still many pages left in the story about us and I feel like we shouldn't talk like the ending has already been written.

We learnt that there are many young people interested in environmental issues and choose it as their field of study. The future is unexplored territory. And they are searching for the answers.

It was a time for us to mourn, for the things that COVID-19 took away from us, a time to discover how precious each and every moment we have taken for granted was.

We are in the ideal time of our lives to take on new challenges. It wasn't as if you could blame anyone. You must have felt the frustration...the world changed like if we were transported in a flash to a parallel one.

There will be choices we make that might not be perfect but that does not mean there won't be anything we can do.

The band also performed to their latest hit 'Permission to Dance' at the general assembly hall. Watch the performance here.

BTS addresses UNGA; key highlights of their speech

It was a big night for K-pop as global sensation BTS took to the world stage at the United Nations General Assembly. The band addressed the world leaders at UNGA and also performed their song 'Permission to Dance'.

Soon after the news came out of BTS making it to UNGA that usually always has policymakers engaging in politics and world affairs, netizens thronged the United Nations’ official YouTube channel and posted their signature purple heart emoji along with crying emoji and thumbs up emoji, to name a few. More than 980,000 viewers were tuned in there, and tens of thousands of others viewed on other YouTube channels and platforms.

In total, there were more than one million viewers watching BTS at the UNGA, a first.

In their speech, the seven BTS members -- Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook -- spoke about their experiences as part of the younger generation, and how their views about their future paths were being shaped by the pandemic.

Their younger fans in their teens and in their 20s have spent nearly two years in the pandemic learning new things online, connecting with each other on a deeper level, and studying up on issues such as climate change and how they can make a difference, the band members said. BTS addresses UNGA; key highlights of their speech

“I’ve heard that people in their teens and 20s today are being referred to as covid’s lost generation,” RM said. “I think it’s a stretch to say they’re lost, just because the path they tread can’t be seen by grown-up eyes.”

They then spoke in support of the COVID-19 vaccines. “Yes, all seven of us, of course we’ve received vaccinations. The vaccine was a sort of ticket to meeting our fans waiting for us and to being able to stand here before you today,” J-Hope said.

After their speech, BTS showed a video performance of their summer hit song, ‘Permission to Dance.’ The video showed the members singing and dancing throughout the General Assembly Hall and on the UN headquarter premises in New York.

The band members said they hoped the song would inspire positivity and welcomeness.

RM wrote according to Soompi, "I’ve been promoting under the name Rap Monster for about five years, since the end of 2012. It was a stage name that I naturally came to be called among our company family members and my members, after a line in a song I’d made as a trainee, and I think I became very fond of it. But once I started promoting, the name ‘BTS’s Rap Monster’ was a bit long, and I’ve become keenly aware of the fact that it’s become different from [what I want] to put at the front of the music I’ve made for the past five years, and the music I want to share in the future."

He added, “At some point, I started introducing myself as Rapmon or RM, rather than the full name Rap Monster. So I’d like to change the name I use for promotions to ‘RM,’ which I think is more in accordance with the music I’m aiming for and also has a wider spectrum. Since I’ve already released some music and mixtapes as RM, I think that some fans will have already guessed this. I thought about this carefully for a long while, because I want to make music for a long time in the future with an unrestricted and open mind and view."
“It’s possible that it’s a bit awkward to be changing my stage name, which I’ve been called since before my debut, and you may feel like it’s unfamiliar. However, I would be sincerely grateful if you would welcome me after I’ve started with a new name following a long time of consideration,” he concluded the letter.

Happy Birthday RM: Here's why BTS leader changed his name from Rap Monster to RM

China continues to push hard against “celebrity culture” with a group of K-pop fans becoming the latest victims of the crackdown.

Chinese social media site Sina Weibo has suspended 22 K-pop fan accounts for “irrational star-chasing behaviour". They include fans of Korean pop band BTS who crowdfunded on the platform to customise an aeroplane for singer Park Ji-Min's 26th birthday.

Weibo accused one K-pop fan account of "illegal fundraising" for the stunt.

Making the suspension official, Weibo issued a statement: “The company firmly opposes such irrational star-chasing behaviour and will deal with it seriously.” It also added that they pledge to "purify" online discussions and "regulate community order" on its platform.

Currently, the BTS accounts have a ban for 60 days during which they will be unable to make any social posts. Other accounts supporting K-pop acts Blackpink, GOT7 and EXO - who have Chinese members - were given 30-day bans.

China is currently taking the fan culture seriously as they even published guidelines saying they would ban broadcasts by "vulgar internet celebrities" and "feminine-looking men" because they do not portray the values the country wants to promote. China’s Communist Party is also worried about the influence of celebrities on the country’s values. Thus, Chinese actress Zhao Wei, was erased from China's internet, with her films and TV shows taken off streaming platforms and her fan page deleted from Weibo.
