Sensex climbs 500 points, Nifty reclaims 11,200

Domestic stock market indices ended nearly 3 percent lower on Thursday following a global selloff in stocks as fears of fresh pandemic restrictions kept domestic investors jittery.&nbsp;

All sectoral indices also witnessed deep cuts led by the metal, IT, auto, and bank indices down 3-4.5 percent each. The Sensex ended over 1,100 points lower at 36,553 while the broader Nifty50 index slumped 3% to 10,805.

World markets were bathed in a sea of red as fears about a second wave of coronavirus infections in major economies and lack of fresh stimulus from central banks clobbered sentiment.

Foreign investors sold a net $241 million worth of Indian stocks so far this week.

The dollar index, which measures the US dollar against a basket of six major currencies, stood at two-month high of 94.480 today.

All sectoral indices closed with losses, with BSE IT index dropping 4.45 per cent, followed by teck, auto, metal, realty, basic materials, bankex and finance.&nbsp;

The BSE mid-cap and small-cap gauges lost as much as 2.28 per cent.&nbsp;

In the forex market, the rupee depreciated 32 paise to finish at 73.89 against the US dollar.&nbsp;

In rest of Asia, South Korea's KOSPI index plunged 2.59 per cent. Markets in Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong closed with losses of up to 1.82 per cent.&nbsp;

Bourses in Europe too started off on a weak note.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.22 per cent lower at USD 41.68 per barrel.

The S&amp;P BSE Sensex tumbled 812 points, or 2.09 per cent to settle at 38,034 levels. Of 30 constituents, 27 declined and just 3 advanced. IndusInd Bank (down 8.7 per cent) ended as the biggest loser on the index.&nbsp;

On the NSE, the benchmark Nifty50 ended at 11,251, down 254 points, or over 2 per cent. India VIX -- markets' volatility index -- jumped 13 per cent to 22.6 levels.

Asian shares slipped on Monday on fears the global economy may sputter for a while due to a resurgence of coronavirus infections in Europe while fading hopes for US fiscal stimulus hopes also weighed. The domestic stock market indices moved higher in Wednesday's noon deals after spending majority of the session range-bound.

Sensex gained 200 points at 39,250 levels and the Nifty50 index was surpassed the 11,550-mark. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (up 5%) was the top Sensex gainer, followed by Bajaj Auto (up 3%). Besides, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, and Reliance Industries also climbed 1 per cent each.

Meanwhile, total cases of the novel coronavirus in India surged past 5 million on Wednesday, with a single-day jump of 90,123 infections, according to health ministry data.

Separately, government data on Tuesday showed India posted a trade deficit of $6.77 billion in goods in August, higher than the $4.83 billion deficit posted in July.

"Trade deficit data is slightly disappointing... investors are now waiting for some clear-cut signals so that the next wave of buying can emerge," Gandhi added. 
Conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd was the top boost to the Nifty, rising as much as 2.2% to a record high.

The Nifty Auto index rose 1.95%. Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd jumped as much as 5.9% and was among the top boosts to the Nifty 50.

The domestic stock market indices climbed off the day's top to trade flat with a positive bias on Tuesday.

Sensex hovered around 38,820 levels, after rising as high as 39,013 levels intra-day. The Nifty50 index was, meanwhile, holding the 11,450-mark. Sun Pharma and Bajaj Finance (both up 2%) were the top Sensex gainers, followed by NTPC, ICICI Bank, and Tata Steel (all up 1%).

Rupee opened 10 paise higher at 73.38 per dollar on September 15 after the greenback remained soft against its global peers as investors focus on the US Fed monetary policy meeting.

In the previous session, Sensex ended 97.92 points or 0.25 per cent lower at 38,756.63, while the Nifty slipped 24.40 points or 0.21 per cent to close at 11,440.05.

Exchange data showed that foreign institutional investors bought equities worth Rs 298.22 crore on a net basis on Monday.

Domestic equities opened on a positive note tracking firm cues from global markets and sustained foreign fund inflow, traders said.

Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul were trading with gains in mid-day deals.

Stock exchanges on Wall Street ended significantly higher in overnight trade.

Meanwhile, global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.10 per cent lower at USD 39.57 per barrel.

Domestic stock market closed higher on Tuesday, boosted by Bharti Airtel Ltd’s gains after the country’s top court gave mobile carriers 10 years to pay dues owed to the government, with encouraging manufacturing data supporting risk appetite.

The S&amp;P BSE Sensex ended at 38,900.80, up 273 points, or 0.71 per cent with Bharti Airtel (up over 6 per cent) being the top gainer and ONGC (down over 3 per cent) the biggest loser. NSE's Nifty ended at 11,470, up 83 points or 0.73 per cent. India VIX declined over 5 per cent to 21.67 levels.

In the broader market, the S&amp;P BSE MidCap index ended over 1 per cent higher at 14,832 levels while the S&amp;P BSE SmallCap index ended at 14,413, up 77 points, or 0.54 per cent.&nbsp;

Bharti Airtel was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying 6.38 per cent, after the Supreme Court granted 10 years to telecom firms for paying the adjusted gross revenue (AGR)-related dues to the government with certain conditions.

Bajaj Finance, Asian Paints, Tata Steel, NTPC and SBI were among the other gainers.

On the other hand, ONGC, Axis Bank, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and ICICI Bank were among the laggards, dropping up to 3.29 per cent.

Meanwhile, India's manufacturing sector activity re-entered the growth territory in August after four months, driven by a rebound in production volumes and improvement in customer demand following resumption of business operations, a monthly survey showed.

Stock market indices end higher on Airtel boost, rebound in factory data

The Indian stock market witnessed some handsome gains led by rally in banking stocks.&nbsp;

Sensex settled at 39,467.31, up 353.84 points or 0.90%, while Nifty advanced 96 points or 0.83% to end at 11,655.25.

IndusInd Bank, closing 10% higher, was the top Sensex gainer followed by Axis Bank, SBI and ICICI Bank. Power Grid, Infosys, HUL, Maruti and Asian Paints were among the laggards. Of 30 Sensex shares 17 closed in the green.

Global equities were mixed after US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the central bank will remain accommodative and shift to a more relaxed approach on inflation. However, lack of specifics disappointed markets, analysts said.

"Global markets were trading uncertain following the US Fed Reserve's policy shift to focus on economic growth and less on inflation. However, the indication that the US Fed would continue to let interest rates remain low and expectation of more stimulus to follow, boosted the Indian markets.

"The stimulus and the associated liquidity are important to our markets since that has been one of the drivers for the current stock market run. As per NSDL, FPI net investments into equity, as a whole, have been around Rs 45,000 crore, which makes it one of the best months for net inflows," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

BSE bankex, telecom, finance, oil and gas, energy and realty indices rallied as much as 4 per cent, while auto, utilities, IT, FMCG and metal closed lower.

In the broader markets, the BSE mid-cap index rose 0.55 per cent, while the small-cap gauge fell 0.23 per cent.

Strong foreign fund inflows, led by high global liquidity and decline in US dollar, also fuelled the markets, traders said.

Foreign institutional investors bought equities worth a net Rs 1,164.32 crore on Thursday, exchange data showed.

The rupee soared 43 paise to end at 73.39 against the US dollar on Friday.

In rest of Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul ended with gains. Japan's Nikkei tumbled after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe resigned due to health reasons.

Nifty ends above 11,600, Sensex jumps 350 points

Domestic stock market indices ended in the green for the fifth consecutive session on August 27, supported by gains in select heavyweights such as HDFC, Axis Bank, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, SBI, ICICI Bank and IndusInd Bank.

The S&amp;P BSE Sensex ended 39 points or 0.10 per cent higher at 39,113.47 levels, with IndusInd Bank (up over 6 per cent) being the top gainer and ONGC (down over 1 per cent) the biggest loser. NSE's Nifty ended at 11,559, up nearly 10 points, or 0.084 per cent. India VIX fell over 2 per cent to 18.90 levels.&nbsp;

In the broader market, the S&amp;P BSE MidCap index ended flat at 15,155.04 while the S&amp;P BSE SmallCap index ended at 15,025.51, up 0.35 per cent.&nbsp;

IndusInd Bank was the top gainer in the Sensex pack on Thursday, rallying 6.59 per cent, followed by M&amp;M, SBI, HDFC, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma and Maruti.

On the other hand, ONGC, Bajaj Auto, RIL, Kotak Bank, UltraTech Cement and Bharti Airtel were among the laggards, shedding up to 1.47 per cent.

After opening higher, the markets continued to trade in the positive zone in the afternoon session as traders were encouraged by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das' statement that the new resolution framework is expected to give durable relief to borrowers amid the COVID-19 crisis, said Narendra Solanki, Head- Equity Research (Fundamental), Anand Rathi.

However, market participants turned cautious as August futures and options (F&amp;O) contracts expired, traders said.

Further, global investors are awaiting cues from US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's speech at the central bank's annual Jackson Hole symposium. Officials in the past have used the meeting, being held online this year, to make market-moving announcements.

Sectorally, the BSE realty index rallied 6.63 per cent, followed by auto, consumer durables, healthcare, bankex, finance, and industrials indices.

Broader BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices settled up to 0.35 per cent higher.

Bourses in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul settled with losses, while Shanghai closed in the positive territory.

Stock exchanges in Europe were trading on a negative note in early deals.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.04 per cent higher at USD 46.18 per barrel.

Meanwhile, the rupee soared 48 paise to close at 73.82 against the US dollar after the RBI Governor said the central bank has not exhausted its ammunition to deal with the pandemic-induced stress.

Speaking at a webinar, Das also said rather than becoming averse to lending, banks have to improve their risk management and governance frameworks, and also build sufficient resilience.

Lack of buying triggers and profit-booking in index heavyweight Reliance Industries capped the gains for the benchmarks, traders said.

After a choppy session, the BSE index ended 44.80 points or 0.12 per cent higher at 38,843.88.

The NSE Nifty inched up 5.80 points or 0.05 per cent to close at 11,472.25.

Bajaj Finance was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying 4.39 per cent, followed by SBI, Tech Mahindra, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank.

On the other hand, NTPC, Sun Pharma, Nestle India, Tata Steel, L&amp;T, Infosys and Bajaj Auto were among the laggards, shedding up to 1.61 per cent.

Global markets were largely positive after the US and China affirmed their commitment to a phase-1 trade deal.

"Indian markets exhibited characteristic volatility, trading undecidedly, before ending flat with a slight positive bias. This was in spite of positive global cues after the US and China reaffirmed their commitment to a previous trade deal and also due to progress in virus vaccine development.

"In the Indian markets this positivity was offset by losses in index blue-chips. The markets are trading uncertain due to lack of domestic triggers. Investors are advised to remain cautious and keep booking profits whenever possible," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

Sensex, Nifty in the green; broader indices outperform

Domestic stock market shares fell and the Nifty snapped six straight sessions of gains on Wednesday, as metal and private sector banks lost ground, with rising coronavirus cases dampening investor sentiment.

Sensex dipped 260 points to 38,140 levels and the Nifty50 index hovered around 11,250-mark. Bajaj Finance (down 2%), Bajaj Finserv and Axis Bank (down 1%) were the top Sensex laggards. Besides, heavyweights HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries also slipped more than 1 per cent each in early deals.

In Mumbai trading, the Nifty private banking index slipped nearly 1% and the Nifty metal index fell more than 1.5% in early trading.

Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in India jumped by 53,601 to nearly 2.27 million as of Tuesday morning, including 45,257 deaths.

Domestic stock markets rose and the Nifty gained for a sixth straight session on Tuesday as gains in ICICI Bank Ltd following the launch of a share sale put market fears over rising coronavirus cases on the back burner.

The S&amp;P BSE climbed 338 points to 38,520 levels and the Nifty50 index topped the 11,350-mark.

Private-sector lender ICICI Bank rose as much as 2.27% to a more than 2-week high and was the top gainer on the Nifty after it set floor price of 351.36 rupees per share for its qualified institutional placement.

The Nifty private banking index advanced over 1% in early trading.

Among the major asian markets, the Japanese Nikkei 225 index shot up 1.75 per cent, South Korean Kospi roared 1.66 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng skyrocketed2.44 per cent while the Shanghai index added 0.33 per cent in the opening bell trade session.

At the Wall Street yesterday, Dow Jones rose 1.30 per cent, Nasdaq shed 0.39 per cent, SmallCap 2000 rose 1.03 per cent while S&amp;P 500 added 0.27 per cent.

Domestic stock market indices ended the day in red on Friday dragged by heavyweights like Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and auto stocks.

The S&amp;P BSE Sensex ended 129 points or 0.34 per cent lower at 37,607 while the Nifty50 index gave up the 11,100-mark to settle at 11,073, down 29 points or 0.26 per cent.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indexes ended the day in green, up 0.43 percent and 0.83 percent higher respectively.

Nifty Pharma remained the best-performing index of the day, up 3.56 percent followed by Nifty Metal and Nifty FMCG. Nifty Media was the worst-performing index of the day, closing 0.87 percent lower.

Global markets

Asian shares turned lower in a choppy session on Friday as abysmal economic data from the United States and rising global Covid-19 cases darkened the mood, despite strong US tech earnings and manufacturing recoveries in China and Japan.

European shares were expected to open broadly lower across the board, with Euro Stoxx 50 futures down 0.28 per cent, German DAX futures 0.49 per cent lower and FTSE futures off 0.08 per cent.

The US dollar was also set for its worst month in a decade amid expectations the Fed will maintain its ultra-loose monetary policy for years.

In commodities, oil prices rose and were on track for monthly gains, boosted by a weaker dollar in the face of continuing concerns over the recovery of the US economy as the coronavirus ravages the world’s biggest economy and oil consumer.

The domestic stock market indices inched lower on Monday as heavyweight banking stocks fell after a central bank report forecast that bad loans could soar due to a rise in pandemic-led debt burdens, with a record jump in daily virus cases also denting sentiment.

The S&amp;P BSE Sensex dipped 120 points to 38,000 levels while the Nifty50 index slipped below the 11,200 mark. Among individual stocks, HDFC Bank dipped over 3 per cent after Managing Director Aditya Puri sold 95 per cent of his shareholding in the bank valued at Rs 842.7 crore between July 21 and July 23.

During the day trade S&amp;P BSE Sensex was down over 200 points while the 50-stock Nifty slipped below the 11,150 mark.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the rupee pared its initial gains and settled on a flat note at 74.83 (provisional) to the US dollar. At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit opened on a strong note at 74.70, but erased the gains to finally close at 74.83, unchanged from its previous closing.

At 10:15 am, the BSE S&amp;P Sensex was up by 376 points or 1.02 per cent at 37,396 while the Nifty 50 edged higher by 107 points or 0.99 per cent at 11,009.Except for Nifty pharma which slipped by 1.25 per cent and FMCG which was down by 0.2 per cent, all sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the positive terrain with Nifty private bank and financial service up by 2.2 per cent, PSU bank by 1.9 per cent and IT by 1.2 per cent. Among stocks, HDFC Bank surged by 4.07 per cent to Rs 1,143.20 per share after the private sector lender reported nearly 20 per cent jump in its Q1 net profit at Rs 6,659 crore. ICICI Bank was up by 3.2 per cent, IndusInd Bank by 2.3 per cent and State Bank of India by 2.2 per cent.&nbsp;

Rupee opened 8 paise higher at 74.94 per dollar on Monday against Friday's close of 75.02.
