Playing on Day 5 of the Gabba Test of the Border Gawaskar Trophy, Bumrah broke Kapil Dev’s record for most wickets by an Indian on Australian soil. With two wickets in the second innings of Australia, Bumrah now has 52 scalps, making him the most successful Indian bowler Down Under.</p></p>
<h2><strong>Bumrah runs riot</strong></h2>
<p>Having started the day with the bat, Bumrah and Akash Deep added eight more runs before the latter was dismissed by Travis Head. With a lead of 185 runs, Australia came out to bat and they looked to make a good start to their innings. However, Bumrah was on the money for the visitors and scalped the wickets of Usman Khawaja (8) and Marnus Labuschagne (1) which saw him break Kapil’s record for most wickets.</p>
<p>Kapil had 51 wickets in 11 matches while Anil Kumble bagged 49 wickets in 10 matches during their tours Down Under.</p>

<h2><strong>Australia suffer batting meltdown</strong></h2>
<p>With a lead of 185 runs in the first innings, the early wickets saw Australia suffer a batting meltdown as they lost seven wickets. Before declaring on 89, Aussie batters were all over the place, as Bumrah ended with figures of 18/3, while Akash Deep (28/2) and Mohammed Siraj (36/2) were also amongst the wicket-takers.</p>
<p>Pat Cummins was the top scorer with 22 off 10 while Alex Carey (20) and Travis Head (17) were the only other batters to get into double figures.</p>
<p>At the time of writing, India were 8/0 as they were given a target of 275 runs to win in the two remaining sessions of the Gabba Test.</p>

<p>Ashwin’s family also urged him to think it through and that the spinner decided on taking a final call on how things unfold Down Under; he, however, on Tuesday (Dec 17) informed his family that he is retiring the next day, the day five of the Gabba Test.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rohit also mentioned during the post-match presser that he and Ashwin had a brief chat about Ashwin’s future (upon Rohit’s arrival in Perth), with the skipper convincing him to stick around for the second game (the Pink-Ball Test in Adelaide), which Ashwin played, replacing Washington Sundar in the XI.&nbsp;</p>

Ashwin retires: No decision made till he landed in Perth; contemplated hanging boots following BGT - Report

<p>Ravichandran Ashwin, the ace Indian spinner, announced his international retirement after the conclusion of the Gabba Test against Australia on Wednesday (Dec 18). Just before the umpires decided to call off the game due to rain interruption ahead of tea on day five, visuals of Virat Kohli and Ashwin hugging in the dressing room indicated what was about to unfold.</p>

<p>Following the game, Ashwin joined Team India captain Rohit Sharma for the post-game presser,&nbsp;announced his retirement, and calmly left the arena, as he did with Test cricket despite being the seventh highest-ranked bowler in the format.</p>

<p>Ashwin has countless records to his name; despite being the only cricketer to score more than five Test hundreds and picking over 500 wickets at the same time, the off-spinner is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests (533) after Anil Kumble (619). Ashwin also has joint second-most five-wicket hauls (37) with the late Shane Warne in red-ball cricket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since debuting against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in 2011, Ashwin has pioneered his way to become India’s greatest matchwinner, especially at home. For the record, Ravi Ashwin is an ODI World Cup and a Champions Trophy winner.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, upon announcing his retirement, his teammates, former cricketers, experts, and even broadcasters took to social media to share delight over watching him play and win countless matches for the team across formats.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With India needing 275 runs to win the Gabba Test, the rain was once again the highlight reel of Day 5 before the stumps were called. Interestingly, India started the day with the bat as Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep added eight more runs before the latter was dismissed by Travis Head.</p>

With rain playing spoilsport for the fourth straight day in Brisbane, the overhead conditions predicted for the fifth day too looks gloomy. Due to countless interruptions during the past two days (third and fourth) and considering the first day getting washed out (with only 13.2 overs bowled), only 198 overs have been bowled, with India trailing behind by 193 runs in the first innings.</p></p>
<p>Though the only day left in this Test is unlikely to produce a result with two innings remaining, the chances of play getting underway and any team pushing for a potential result, let alone all 98 overs being bowled, are highly unlikely. </p>

<h2>Will it rain on day five in Brisbane?</h2>
<p>Per Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, several rain interruptions will highlight day five of the Gabba Test, with showers expected to stop play during late morning or afternoon hours.</p>
<p>"High chance of showers, most likely in the late morning and afternoon. The chance of a thunderstorm, possibly severe,” Australia's Bureau of Meteorology said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.</p>
<p>While only 13.2 overs were possible on day one, day two saw the most action, including Travis Head’s second successive hundred against India; whereas, on day three and day four, partial cricket took place, with only 58 overs possible on Tuesday (Dec 17).</p>
<p>In case of no interruption on day five, Australia will aim to wrap up India’s innings at the earliest, looking to pile up on the lead and give them a handy target to chase within two sessions or less. Although the chances of things falling in place just for them are minute, considering India’s pace attack can also pull off an upset and dismiss them early and make the game out of it, a definite result looks like a far-fetched dream.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Australia’s bowling coach Daniel Vettori reflected on how the Aussie quicks coped with regular interruptions and Josh Hazlewood’s absence on day four, who got ruled out of the ongoing Test and perhaps the remainder of the series with a side strain.</p>
<p>"The weather, in terms of the breaks, allowed Mitch and Patty to come back on multiple occasions whereas if we'd played out the full 90 overs it would have been a lot tougher to manage. </p>

<p>Rohit Sharma looks clueless about his batting, captaincy and Test future. On day two of the third BGT Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, his tactics and field changes raised eyebrows in the commentary box and on the internet, with the fans and former cricketers coming hard on the Indian skipper. <h2>Head hits hundred at Gabba</h2>

<p>Travis Head has been a thorn in Team India’s flesh for over a year. Since costing them the WTC Final 2025 with a stunning hundred, Head broke a billion hearts with a decisive and match-winning 137 against the hosts in the 2023 ODI World Cup Final. Though his magnificent 89 against Rohit’s team in this year’s T20 World Cup in the Americas went in vain, his one in the second Test in Adelaide in the ongoing BGT didn’t.</p>

<p>Thanks to his 140 in the Pink-Ball Test, Australia won the second game, levelling the five-match series 1-1.&nbsp;</p>

BGT: ‘Dumb cricket’- Simon Katich tears into Rohit Sharma’s clueless captaincy as Head hits hundred at Gabba

<p>Australia have been dealt a fresh injury blow on Day 4 of the Gabba Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy series after Josh Hazlewood sat out due to calf soreness. Playing at the Gabba on Tuesday (Dec 17), Hazlewood complained of calf soreness in the opening session of the day before leaving the field. Cricket Australia later confirmed that the star pacer will have a scan to reveal the extent of the injury. Despite him not being available, Australia are top of their game as India look to avoid back-to-back defeats.</p>

<h2><strong>Hazlewood sits out with injury</strong></h2>

<p>Having opted to miss the Adelaide Test, Hazlewood returned to the Playing XI for the Gabba contest. However, with him complaining of calf soreness, Cricket Australia’s decision to include him in the Test match has backfired big time. Interestingly, according to International Cricket Council (ICC) guidelines, a player cannot bat (unless final batter) or bowl for the duration of time he/she has spent out of the ground due to medical reasons.</p>

<p>So in case Hazlewood does return, he will have to spend considerable time on the field if he is to bowl again for the Aussies.</p>

<p>So far, Hazlewood has six wickets in the BGT and will look to continue his impressive form in case he is fit.</p>

<p>But if he is not able to continue, Scott Boland and Michael Neser will be in line to take Hazlewood’s place in the Playing XI.</p>

<p>Boland played in the second Test match in Adelaide and scalped five wickets including the prize wickets of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.</p>

<p>At the time of writing, rain again played spoilsport as India were 180/6 and still trailed by 265 runs in the first innings. India still need 65 runs to avoid follow-on while there are only a maximum of five sessions remaining in the match. As things stand, India’s chances of winning the Test match are all but over with draw being the best outcome.</p>

<p>The result will also have bearings on India and Australia’s World Test Championship (WTC) final qualification with a draw doing no favours to the former. &nbsp;</p>
