Hazlewood played the BGT opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth but missed the following Pink-Ball Test in Adelaide due to an injury. Though he recovered in time for the third Test at the Gabba, Hazlewood pulled up ahead of the fourth-day play, injuring his right calf.&nbsp;

“I’ve had a history of sides and calves; they’re probably the two things that have kept me out for the majority over the last four years. “Just frustrating really. Ticked every box heading into the (third) Test; I could understand if it was my side again, but it was just a random calf strain,” Hazlewood said during a chat with 7NEWS. “It’s just the timing again, they are only little 2-3 week injuries, it’s just the timing of it and missing big games is the frustrating thing, Obviously, do a deep dive into it and see what we can come up with … feels pretty random.”

Hazlewood played the BGT opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth but missed the following Pink-Ball Test in Adelaide due to an injury. Though he recovered in time for the third Test at the Gabba, Hazlewood pulled up ahead of the fourth-day play, injuring his right calf. 
“I’ve had a history of sides and calves; they’re probably the two things that have kept me out for the majority over the last four years. But yeah, I sort of just keep adding another layer to the defence, hopefully, get back into the gym, I’ve ticked a lot of boxes over the last 12 months,” the seamer continued.
<h2>Josh eyes return in Sri Lanka Tests</h2>
Considering Hazlewood will not return until 100% fit, the seamer expressed his desire to make a comeback for the away Sri Lanka Tests early next year. 
Though Australia still leads India on the chart for teams with better chances of directly sealing the WTC Final 2025 qualification, they must win at least two of the four remaining Tests to ensure a smooth ride into the finals. 
“That’s probably the goal; just take it as it comes over the next few weeks. No rush to get anything in a hurry, it’s just getting everything right. Probably take a few extra days here and there. Ticking things off and getting everything right,” Hazlewood noted.
Meanwhile, the five-match series between Australia and India is tied at 1-1, with two games remaining. 
Should the hosts win the remaining two matches, they will directly qualify for the final, but if India wins and completes the three-peat, they will reach their third straight WTC Final.

During an exclusive chat with CNN News18, Ashwin’s father, Ravichandran, made a shocking revelation about his son’s retirement call after day five of the third Test in Brisbane. He said although calling time on a career is a personal choice and that he has no say in that, Ravichandran noted that constant humiliation regarding Ashwin not being the number one choice spinner regardless of the conditions might have pushed him to take this sudden decision, something his father also got to know about at the last minute.

“I too came to know last minute, actually. What was going on in his mind I don’t know. He just announced. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I did not have any feelings at all for that. But the way he gave his retirement, one part I was very happy, another part not happy because he should have continued,” Ashwin’s father said during the chat with the news outlet.
“(Retiring) is his (Ashwin’s) wish and desire, I cannot interfere in that, but the way in which he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation," Ravichandran continued.

The veteran off-spinner is India's second-highest Test wicket-taker with 537 scalps besides his name, only behind the great Anil Kumble, who picked 619 wickets in his decorated career. Ashwin also scored six Test hundreds, becoming the first player to notch up five or more Test centuries besides picking over 500 wickets.
Though several reports indicated a major announcement just after the Brisbane tie, no one outside the players and the team management expected Ashwin to hang up his boots. 
Ashwin joined Rohit Sharma in the post-match presser and announced his decision to step aside from international cricket; he though continues to remain available for selection for his state side (Tamil Nadu) in the domestic sphere and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.
"This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level. At the same time, Konstas has been knocking at the selectors’ doors since the home summer began, averaging over 55. The 19-year-old recently scored a hundred against India for Prime Minister’s XI, later hitting an impressive 88 for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield before creating history with his quick-fire 56 for Sydney Thunder on his BBL debut.
"I'm understanding the scenarios of the game and when to take on the game. Trying to mature as a batsman. Obviously, I'm going to make some silly mistakes, but I think understanding when to take the game on [is an area I've improved in],” Konstas said. 
<h2>Changes in Australia XI for MCG Test</h2>

"He understands what the team is thinking. He understands what kind of combinations we are thinking of. When we came here as well, we were not sure about which spinner was going to play. We just wanted to assess and see what kind of conditions we get in front of us, But yeah, when I arrived in Perth, this was a chat we had, and I somehow convinced him to stay for that pink ball Test," Rohit said at the post match press conference.

Saying goodbye to the game, but obviously, we've not been to Melbourne yet, so we don't know what sort of conditions we expect there and what sort of combination, but just keeping Ash in particularly in mind, giving him that respect that this if this is what he thinks, we should allow him to think that way and we should all stand by," he added.

During an exclusive chat with CNN News18, Ashwin’s father, Ravichandran, made a shocking revelation about his son’s retirement call after day five of the third Test in Brisbane. He said although calling time on a career is a personal choice and that he has no say in that, Ravichandran noted that constant humiliation regarding Ashwin not being the number one choice spinner regardless of the conditions might have pushed him to take this sudden decision, something his father also got to know about at the last minute.

"Everyone said nice words to him, about him and gave him a very nice and emotional send-off. Yes, he is flying out of Brisbane tonight only and due to lack of enough time, a proper gathering wasn't possible at the team hotel," a source close to the information said, as quoted by the Times of India (TOI).

Besides, Australian Test captain Pat Cummins and ace spinner Nathan Lyon presented Ashwin with a special jersey. Upon leaving the arena after dropping a retirement bombshell, Ashwin was greeted with countless handshakes and hugs.

Rain interruptions led to a draw in Brisbane, with the series scorecard reading 1-1 heading into the Boxing Day Test at the MCG starting December 26. 
Australia batted first at the Gabba, with only 13.2 overs possible on day one. Day two was all about Travis Head and his love affair with scoring runs against India as he slammed his second straight ton in the whites. Australia scored a whopping 445 in the first innings.
In reply, India scored 260 all out, with KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and the tailenders contributing with the bat. 
Australia suffered a mini-collapse in their second innings, getting reduced to 33 for five at one stage, with Pat Cummins declaring on 89 for seven, setting India 275 runs to win.
The visitors came out for a mere formality as the final rain interruption forced the umpires to call off the game, leading to no result.

Though he was in contention to retain his place for the third match, the management decided to replace him with Jadeja. That, however, is assumed to be the final nail in the coffin. 
The report also suggested that Ashwin informed each member of the BGT-bound Test squad individually about his decision to retire, which shocked most players.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the ace Indian spinner, announced his international retirement after the conclusion of the Gabba Test against Australia on Wednesday (Dec 18). Just before the umpires decided to call off the game due to rain interruption ahead of tea on day five, visuals of Virat Kohli and Ashwin hugging in the dressing room indicated what was about to unfold.
Following the game, Ashwin joined Team India captain Rohit Sharma for the post-game presser, announced his retirement, and calmly left the arena, as he did with Test cricket despite being the seventh highest-ranked bowler in the format.

Ashwin has countless records to his name; despite being the only cricketer to score more than five Test hundreds and picking over 500 wickets at the same time, the off-spinner is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests (533) after Anil Kumble (619). Ashwin also has joint second-most five-wicket hauls (37) with the late Shane Warne in red-ball cricket. 
Since debuting against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in 2011, Ashwin has pioneered his way to become India’s greatest matchwinner, especially at home. For the record, Ravi Ashwin is an ODI World Cup and a Champions Trophy winner.
Meanwhile, upon announcing his retirement, his teammates, former cricketers, experts, and even broadcasters took to social media to share delight over watching him play and win countless matches for the team across formats.

Ravi Ashwin retirement reactions: Sachin, Jay Shah, fellow mates thank Test genius for countless memories

Having already lost seamer Josh Hazlewood for the remainder of the BGT due to a side strain, Australia cannot afford to lose another match-winner in Travis Head for the two remaining Tests against India. After the third game at the Gabba ended in a draw, with rain playing spoilsport throughout, local media suggested that Head suffered a groin injury during Australia’s second innings, casting doubts over his MCG Test participation.
Head, who hammered India with twin hundreds in Adelaide and Brisbane, clarified it's the soreness that troubled him a bit while running between the wickets on day five, insisting he will be fit to play the Boxing Day Test at the iconic MCG.

Although he stayed for over ten hours at the crease across three matches, Head asked everyone not to follow his laidback preparation in the lead-up to matches. The star batter has expressed openly about not preparing too hard in the nets, unlike his fellow teammates like Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne.
"I feel like I'm moving really well, I'm playing well. I've just got to make sure that I continue to stay fresh mentally and that means not hitting as many balls at training (when) others do," Head continued.
"It's all personal preference. But it's hard – there's not many left-handers above me. 'Uz' (Usman Khawaja) is the only one, and we play a completely different game style and then the rest are right-handers.
"So, it's hard to all communicate the same way on what different plans are. But we back each guy. Hopefully, I'm still doing it (making runs) next week. But if that's not the case, then different guys will step up at different times and hopefully build those partnerships,” Head noted.

Following the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane, which ended in a draw, all thanks to countless and continuous rain interruptions throughout, India captain Rohit Sharma broke his silence on Shami’s potential return to the side for the remaining two matches at the MCG and SCG, respectively.
Rohit said the ball is in the BCCI's Centre of Excellence, formerly the National Cricket Academy (NCA) court, to clarify his fitness concerns. Although Shami returned last month for Bengal playing the Ranji Trophy and has since played several games across formats, including in SMAT, Rohit said there were complaints about his knee causing concerns, which restricts him from considering his India call-up.
The right-arm seamer is also picked in the Bengal squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy starting December 21.

The Indian skipper said he knows that Shami has returned to playing domestic cricket back home following an extended hiatus but remains cautious of a possible recurrence of an injury, which remains a bigger concern to Shami’s future than he re-linking with the Indian Team in Australia and help them complete the three-peat. 
"I understand he's playing a lot of cricket back home, but there have been some complaints about his knee as well. So, look, the last thing you want is the player coming here and then pulling out in the middle of the game. You know what happens when that kind of thing happens."
"So, there is no way we want to take that chance unless we are like, not 100%, 200% sure, we're not going to take any risk. But yeah, like I said in the last press conference, the door is open if those guys at the NCA feel that he is okay to go and recover and play, we'll be happy to have him,” Rohit continued.
Meanwhile, as things stand, the BCCI’s medical team is yet to clear Shami of any discomfort, something even Rohit picked upon following the Pink-Ball Test in Adelaide.
Though Shami’s comeback looks unlikely given three Tests against Australia are already over, he could be handy for the ODI side in the Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled for the February-March window.

At the post-match presser, Ashwin said, "This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats of the game at the international level. I do feel there is a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer. I would like to showcase that in club-level cricket. So this will be my last day. I have had a lot of fun. I must say I've created a lot of memories alongside Rohitt and several of my teammates."
Ashwin signs off with 537, 156 and 72 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively. He played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs and 72 T20Is for India, from 2010-2024, and was part of the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy wins. He ends as India's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests and overall (765).
In the ongoing BGT edition, Ashwin only played the second Test, in Adelaide, before stepping aside from the highest level.
