<p>Bangladesh may have lost the second ODI against New Zealand but their two returning batsman Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah played a decent knock of 44 and 49, respectively. The knock, although scratchy, should put some faith in dressing room come World Cup next month.</p>

<p>Tamim, who made headlines in July after retiring and then making a U-turn a day after, hadn't batted since then due to a back injury. The batsman said after that match that he was nervous while batting.</p>

But after the first over, it came down. It was nice to hit the balls again. I think it was good to be out there but there's certainly still a lot of discomfort in my back. The physios are trying to overcome it."</p>

Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal says 'he was nervous while going to bat' against New Zealand in second ODI

<p>The United States has said it is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on Bangladeshi nationals who are seen to be interfering in or "undermining" the upcoming democratic election process in the South Asian nation.<br />
<br />
General elections are supposed to be held in Bangladesh in late December or January 2024.</p>

<p>Reacting to the US announcement made on Friday, Bangladesh said though the development is "not a pleasing experience", Dhaka is "not worried" as it is doing nothing wrong.</p>

<p>"Today, the (US) Department of State is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on Bangladeshi individuals responsible for or complicit in undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh," US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.</p>

<p>"These persons and members of their immediate family may be found ineligible for entry into the United States," the statement said.</p>

<p>Individuals, including members of law enforcement agencies, the ruling party, and the political opposition would come under the purview of the restriction as the "United States is committed to supporting free and fair elections in Bangladesh that are carried out in a peaceful manner," it said.</p>

<p>The development is "not a pleasing experience" but "we have to go through it", he said. He said he expected the US government to enforce the new visa restriction policy after reviewing facts and figures in a fair manner.</p>

Bangladesh bowler Tanzim Sakib, who recently made his international debut in Asia Cup Super Four game against India, has come under fire for his social media posts. The bowler has been called out for 'misogynistic' content of his Facebook posts uploaded some time last year. "If the wife works, the husband's rights are not ensured," he had posted on Facebook last year. "If the wife works, the child's rights are not ensured. If the wife works, her elegance is damaged." "If the wife works, the family is ruined. If the wife works, the veil is ruined. If the wife works, society is ruined," the post read further, reported news agency AFP. Also Read: Ex-SL skipper Arjuna Ranatunga backs Ravi Ashwin to be in India's World Cup squad In a separate post, the bowler warns men of their sons not having a 'modest' mother if they married "a woman who is accustomed to free mixing with her male friends in a university.' Criticising Sakib, Paris-based feminist writer Jannatun Nayeem Prity pointed out that Bangladesh team jerseys were made in the factories mostly staffed by women. "I feel sorry for you that you don't consider your mother a normal human being," she added. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), meanwhile, has said it is looking into the matter. "The issue came to our attention. We are looking into the matter," BCB cricket operations chief Jalal Yunus told AFP. Tanzim, who took wickets of Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma in the Asia Cup games against India, got much admiration for his skills after the match. The bowler, later in the match, also defended 12 runs in the final over to help Bangladesh win their first game against India since 2012 in the Asia Cup. Sakib, who has played 12 first-class games so far, was also a vital cog in Bangladesh line-up to help them win U-19 World Cup in 2020 by beating India. India, US, EU and Saudi Arabia announced India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor on the sidelines of the G20 leaders' summit in New Delhi. The Megaproject is being seen as the rival of China's Belt and Road initiative. The IMEC will enhance global trade in West Asia and also improve Israel’s position as a hub for transporting goods. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is at the focus of an unprecedented international project that will link infrastructure from Asia to Europe. What will happen to China's BRI now?

From Russia to France, growing global interest in Bangladesh

French President Emmanuel Macron was in Dhaka earlier this week, where he signed a major aircraft deal with his Bangladeshi counter. This visit comes days after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov travelled to the country. The bigger picture shows global powers - both the West and Russia jostling for inroads into Bangladesh, even as China makes its presence felt in the region.

Protests after jailed Bangladeshi Islamist leader dies

<p>At least 55 people have been killed and more than a million affected by two weeks of torrential rains causing floods and landslides in southeast Bangladesh, officials said Sunday.</p>

<p>Administrators of four of the worst-hit districts said floods and landslides since August 1 killed 21 people in Cox's Bazar, 19 in Chittagong, 10 in Bandarban and five in Rangamati.</p>

<p>"These are some of the heaviest rains in recent years," Bangladesh Meteorological Department chief Azizur Rahman told AFP.</p>

<p>He said 312 millimetres (12 inches) of rainfall was recorded on August 7 alone.</p>

<p>Also Read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/fresh-cases-of-bubonic-plague-detected-in-china-625031">Fresh cases of bubonic plague detected in China</a></p>

<p>Officials said heavy rains lashed the region until August 11, triggering flash floods that caused rivers to burst their banks and inundate hundreds of villages.</p>

<p>It was only possible to confirm how many were killed after the floodwaters began to recede.</p>

<p>The summer monsoon brings South Asia around 80 per cent of its annual rainfall, as well as death and destruction due to flooding and landslides.</p>

<p>The rainfall is hard to forecast and varies considerably but scientists say climate change is making the monsoon stronger and more erratic, while deforestation and building on hillsides has made flash floods worse.</p>

<p>"In Cox's Bazar some 600,000 people were affected by the floods," district administrator Shaheen Ibrahim told AFP.</p>

At least 55 people have been killed and more than a million affected by two weeks of torrential rains causing floods and landslides in southeast Bangladesh, officials said Sunday. Administrators of four of the worst-hit districts said floods and landslides since August 1 killed 21 people in Cox's Bazar, 19 in Chittagong, 10 in Bandarban and five in Rangamati. "These are some of the heaviest rains in recent years," Bangladesh Meteorological Department chief Azizur Rahman told AFP. He said 312 millimetres (12 inches) of rainfall was recorded on August 7 alone. Also Read | Fresh cases of bubonic plague detected in China Officials said heavy rains lashed the region until August 11, triggering flash floods that caused rivers to burst their banks and inundate hundreds of villages. It was only possible to confirm how many were killed after the floodwaters began to recede. The summer monsoon brings South Asia around 80 per cent of its annual rainfall, as well as death and destruction due to flooding and landslides. The rainfall is hard to forecast and varies considerably but scientists say climate change is making the monsoon stronger and more erratic, while deforestation and building on hillsides has made flash floods worse.
