As the United States announced a visa policy to promote democratic elections in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday (June 3) that there was no use worrying about visas and sanctions. Attending a programme of her Awami League party in Dhaka's&nbsp;Tejgaon area, Prime Minister Hasina said it did not matter at all if someone did not go to the US&nbsp;crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a 20-hour-plane journey.

"There are other oceans and other continents in the world. We will make friends with those continents crossing the other oceans. Our economy will be stronger and more developed and vibrant," Hasina said, according to a report by The Daily Star.&nbsp;

Hasina pointed out that Dhaka would not depend on others, adding, "It's no use worrying about who will not issue us visas or who will impose sanctions on us."

The Prime Minister advised the US to look at the party (in Bangladesh) that rigged votes and played with the fate of the people- referring to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). She mentioned that&nbsp;Canada declared BNP "a terrorist party."

"The USA did not issue a visa to Tarique Zia for terrorism and corruption," Hasina added, as per the report.&nbsp;

<h2>What is the visa policy?</h2>

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's remarks come days after the US announced a new visa policy&nbsp;to support Bangladesh’s goal of holding free, fair, and peaceful national elections.&nbsp;

In a statement on May 24, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, "Under this policy, the United States will be able to restrict the issuance of visas for any Bangladeshi individual, believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh."

"This includes current and former Bangladeshi officials, members of pro-government and opposition political parties, and members of law enforcement, the judiciary, and security services," Blinken said.&nbsp;

The US Secretary of State added that&nbsp;holding free and fair elections is the responsibility of everyone—voters, political parties, the government, the security forces, civil society, and the media.

The above measure comes as the US has accused Bangladesh of political violence, election manipulation and human rights violations. And according to reports, Wahington in recent years has taken actions to pressurise PM Hasina’s government on human rights and warn it against rigging elections.

A day after the visa policy was announced, Bangladeshi authorities said that they would&nbsp;take steps to tackle and prevent unlawful practices or interference in elections.

"The government apparatus will take necessary measures to prevent and address any unlawful practices or interference...to compromise the smooth and participatory conduct of the elections," the Bangladesh foreign ministry said on May 25.

A team from Myanmar's government was in a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh's border town of Teknaf on Thursday morning. The visit was part of a repatriation scheme where Bangladesh and Myanmar are looking to return around 1100 Rohingyas to Myanmar in the coming weeks. Bangladesh is home to about a million Rohingyas most of whom fled a 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar.

UN: Conditions are not right for Rohingyas return from Bangladesh to Myanmar

A delegation from the Myanmar government on Thursday landed in Bangladesh, embarking on a promising pilot scheme aimed at repatriating approximately 1,200 Rohingya refugees out of the estimated one million currently seeking shelter. Bangladesh's Frustration: Plans to Repatriate 1,100 Rohingyas to Myanmar

A team from Myanmar government, on Thursday (May 25) visited Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh as part of a repatriation scheme that has been mooted. These refugees are stuck in&nbsp;ramshackle camps in southeastern Bangladesh since 2017 when they fled a crackdown by Myanmar military. The crackdown is now in focus of United Nations genocide investigation. A number of previous attempts to repatriate the Rohingya have failed. Now, Bangladesh and Myanmar are looking at returning around 1100 Rohingyas to the violence-hit state of Rakhine in Myanmar in coming weeks.&nbsp;

This month, twenty Rohingyas visited two resettlement camps in Rakhine. Myanmar's military junta is planning to resettle the Rohingyas here. The land, according to some experts, has belonged to Rohingya for generations before it was confiscated.&nbsp;

"We have no permanent representative in this repatriation process," Khin Maung, a prominent Rohingya leader, told AFP before the meeting.

"This repatriation process is just an eyewash. If they didn't ensure our dignity, there is no point returning to IDPs (internally displaced people)," he said.

AFP quoted another Rohingya Muslim individual who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The person said that they did not want to go &nbsp;back to Myanmar "as non-citizens and stay in IDP camps"

Mainul Kabir, head of the Rohingya wing in Bangladesh's foreign ministry, told reporters Thursday that repatriation was "the only way to solve the Rohingya issue".

He said the Myanmar delegation "assured that the confusions that are being created will be resolved gradually".

Human Rights Watch criticised the repatriation plan last week. It said that it posed "grave risks" to the Rohingya.

"Bangladesh is frustrated with its burden as host, but sending refugees back to the control of a ruthless Myanmar junta will just be setting the stage for the next devastating exodus," the group said in a statement.

Myanmar officials visit Rohingya camps in Bangladesh over repatriation plan

Bangladesh will take steps to tackle and prevent unlawful practices or interference in its elections, authorities said on Thursday, a day after the United States threatened curbs on citizens of the South Asian nation who undermine them.

Concern flared after accusations of vote-rigging and the targeting of the political opposition marred national elections in 2014 and 2018, charges denied by the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

US&nbsp;Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the United States is adopting a new policy to restrict visas for Bangladeshis who undermine the democratic election process at home.

"The government apparatus will take necessary measures to prevent and address any unlawful practices or interference...to compromise the smooth and participatory conduct of the elections," the Bangladesh foreign ministry said in response.

"The electoral process will remain under strict vigilance, including by international observers as accredited by the Election Commission," it added in a statement.

The commission retains the ability to perform its functions in full independence, credibility and efficiency, the ministry said.

Political analyst Badiul Alam Majumder welcomed the US&nbsp;curbs.

"I see this restriction as a preventive measure," he added. "This could avert efforts by individuals to rig elections in their favour."

Hasina, who has kept tight control of the South Asian nation since coming to power in 2009, has been accused of human rights violations, obliteration of press freedom, suppression of dissent and the jailing of critics, including many supporters of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).&nbsp;

The BNP has been calling for Hasina to step down and for the next election, due in January 2024, to be held under a neutral caretaker government, a demand her government has rejected.

"This new visa policy proves once again that the international community is certain that a free and fair election is not possible under this government," said a senior BNP leader, Zahir Uddin Swapon.

Since December 2021, Washington has maintained sanctions on an elite police unit targeting crime and terrorism, which has been accused of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances.&nbsp;

Bangladesh promises free, fair elections in response to US visa curbs

In a significant development for India's diplomatic ties, three Islamic countries — Indonesia, UAE, and Bangladesh — attended the G20 tourism meeting held in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir union territory.

This gathering marked&nbsp;the first international meeting in the union territory since the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two union territories in August 2019.

Representing Bangladesh at the meeting was its High Commissioner Mustafizur Rahman, while the UAE sent two officials from its capital.

The presence of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country and a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as well as the G20, was particularly noteworthy. All three countries are members of OIC.

The development highlights the strengthening ties between India and these three nations, as evidenced by a series of high-level visits and engagements between them.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Indonesia's Bali last year to attend the G20 meet. Bangladesh and India have been emphasising the "golden phase" of ties, and the relationship with the UAE has grown leaps and bounds—from economy to food security.

The G20 Srinagar meet provided an opportunity for the participants to discuss and exchange ideas on tourism and related sectors. This engagement can contribute to the growth and development of the tourism industry in the region and facilitate the sharing of best practices among countries.

However, it is worth noting that some G20 member countries and invited guests decided not to attend the meeting.

"The schools, which are designated as cyclone shelters... are not strong shelters that can withstand the winds of a cyclone. We are scared."

Numerous people packed into trucks, automobiles, and tuk-tuks and left Sittwe on Saturday in search of higher ground inland after meteorologists issued a 3.5 m (11 ft) storm surge warning. "The schools, which are designated as cyclone shelters... are not strong shelters that can withstand the winds of a cyclone. We are scared." Numerous people packed into trucks, automobiles, and tuk-tuks and left Sittwe on Saturday in search of higher ground inland after meteorologists issued a 3.5 m (11 ft) storm surge warning. "We are not OK because we didn't bring food and other things to cook," said 57-year-old Maung Win from Kyauktaw town. "We can only wait to get food from people's donations." Thousands of people fled the west coast of Myanmar and officials in Bangladesh's neighbouring areas raced to evacuate the Rohingyas on Saturday as the region's most powerful cyclone in a decade churned across the Bay of Bengal.

According to India's meteorological office, Cyclone Mocha was packing winds, at a speed of 220 kilometres per hour (136 miles per hour), similar to a category four hurricane.

The cyclone is expected to weaken before it makes landfall between Cox's Bazar and Sittwe, which is on Myanmar's western Rakhine coast on Saturday.

In the town of around 150,000 people, shops and markets were shuttered and many locals sought shelter in monasteries.

Kyaw Tin, aged 40, said that he was not able to evacuate the area as his son was admitted to the local hospital. "I hope this cyclone won't come to our state. But if this happens we can't ignore it," he stated.

Thousands evacuated as Cyclone Mocha approaches Myanmar, Bangladesh

On the sidelines of the two-day 6th Indian Ocean Conference being held in Dhaka, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in an exclusive conversation with WION's Sidhant Sibal, underscored the need for upholding the Law of the Seas. The foreign minister highlighted that the countries in the region should have "orderly, acceptable consensus on maritime activities" and there must be adherence and respect for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

EAM also spoke at length on the key issues of the debt crisis in the region and stressed the greater need to have more transparency in lending. Bangladesh is hosting the 6th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) from 12-13 May in the capital city of Dhaka. With respect to India's relationship with Bangladesh, Jaishankar stressed how the relationship will give Indian northeastern states a much better chance at accessing the world.&nbsp;

Here is the complete interview:&nbsp;

WION: What is the main agenda of the Indian Ocean Conference? What Delhi can bring in the region on various issues, including security, climate change or connectivity?&nbsp;

Jaishankar: This is the sixth conference and over this period it has evolved a lot. Today, it is the premiere platform to bring together all the countries of the Indian Ocean. Indo-Pacific is very much the fashion nowadays. There is a lot of acceptance of it. There is a lot of understanding of it. Not just in this part of the world but also in Europe and in America. But we should not forget that the Indian Ocean is the core constituent of the Indo-Pacific and the Indian Ocean has its own issues. Most of them are developing countries, and lots of them are post-colonial countries, connectivity is&nbsp;an issue, growth is an issue, and debt is an issue. So, there are a particular set of concerns that are the natural agenda for the Indian Ocean and that is what really the conference is all about.&nbsp;

WION: What are the main concerns, you also mentioned UNCLOS and the debt crisis and how they can be resolved by all the countries collaborating together.&nbsp;

Jaishankar: In my speech, in a limited time, you want to flag the key issues. I flagged UNCLOS because in a sense UNCLOS is the constitution of the oceans. So, adherence to UNCLOS and respect for UNCLOS is essential. We are to have an orderly, acceptable consensus on maritime activities but there are some very specific problems. You spoke about connectivity how connectivity got disrupted and how we need to rebuild it. I also talked about debt and viable projects in this part of the world, we are seeing countries struggling with that, countries struggling with projects where lending has not been transparent, where the return on investment is not realistic and it has put countries under pressure so it is important we learn from lessons. It should not be that one country's problems are only that country's problems. I think there are lessons for everybody else. I think that needs to be flagged. So I would also say that the idea of collaboration itself among countries is essential because you are talking about a vast space.&nbsp;

WION: We have Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) as well. How is India taking the lead in this specific grouping?

Jaishankar: IORA is an established organisation. It has its own agenda, has its own practices, and mechanisms. I mentioned Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS). The president of Mauritius mentioned Indian Ocean Commission. I also mentioned the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). Remember this is the place where the BIMSTEC secretariat is located. So there are a lot of organisations. It is good you are covering this. The Indian Ocean should get attention. I am sure we will have a very good discussion.&nbsp;

WION: You are visiting Bangladesh. How is the relationship between the two countries because there is an increased momentum between the two countries? It is termed as a 'Sonali Adhyay' or the golden phase in the relationship as well. If you can talk about that.

Jaishankar: The relationship has been going on very well, particularly in the last decade. We have seen it growing in every possible sense. When you look at trade, when you look at investment, the movement of people, the projects we are doing, the infrastructure which is helping both the countries. When you see the roads, the railways, the use of ports. And from an Indian perspective, there is obviously a Bangladeshi perspective and interest. But from an Indian perspective, it has great significance where the northeast is concerned because a strong partnership with Bangladesh will give our northeastern states a much better chance at actually accessing the world, in interacting with the rest of the region. The very fact that we are doing this conference here, that itself is a statement of comfort and my coming here, obviously it is for the conference but it is always a pleasure to come to Bangladesh and every visit shows me how much further the relationship has come.&nbsp;

EXCLUSIVE: Jaishankar flags need for adherence to, respect for ‘constitution of the oceans’ UNCLOS

Just months ago, Bangladesh was grabbing headlines as an economic miracle. Then all of a sudden, its growth story took a hit. Economists have talked of Bangladesh going the Sri Lanka-Pakistan way, stressing though that the situation is not irreversible. Why is Bangladesh's Economy in a nosedive mode? Watch this report.

Bangladesh success story fizzles, booming economy slows | Inside South Asia

The IMF has raised concern over Bangladesh's economy amid depleting forex reserves. Is Bangladesh heading in the same direction as Pakistan? Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: Bangladesh's depleting Forex reserves

Bangladesh's economy is facing significant challenges, according to a recent statement by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The country's local currency, the Taka, foreign reserves, and economic growth are at risk due to inflation and the global economic slowdown.

The IMF's warning comes after its recent visit to Bangladesh, during which the organisation assessed the&nbsp;country's economy.&nbsp;

In January, Bangladesh secured a $4.7 billion loan from the IMF to help address mounting economic troubles. The country has already received $476 million as the first installment, with the second part of the loan expected in November.

Bangladesh's foreign reserves are expected to fall to $29.86 billion, the lowest in seven years, after import payments for two months next week.&nbsp;

The fall in exports and remittances, two key sources of foreign currency, have not helped improve Bangladesh's current account&nbsp;deficit.&nbsp;

Exports fell 16.5 percent&nbsp;to $3.95 billion in April from a year earlier, as orders from clothing retailers slowed. Inward remittances, on the other hand, declined 16 percent&nbsp;year-on-year to $1.68 billion in April.

Nevertheless, the IMF has called Bangladesh "one of the fastest growing economies in the Asia-Pacific region".&nbsp;

While Bangladesh's forex reserves are declining, neighbouring India has seen its import cover bloat to a 10-month high. India's foreign exchange reserves rose by $4.53 billion to $588.78 billion in the week ending April 28.

This discrepancy highlights the struggles that Bangladesh is facing compared to its much-larger neighbour.

Once touted as a strong emerging economy, Bangladesh has been struggling since the pandemic hit the global economy. Depleting foreign reserves due to a decline in exports widened Bangladesh's current account deficit to a record $18.7 billion in the last financial year, which ended on June 30, 2022.

The government has also raised fuel and energy prices in recent months after it approached the IMF for assistance.

According to estimates, the Bangladeshi economy is expected to deaccelerate from 7.1 percent in 2021-22 to&nbsp;5.2 percent in 2022-23 due to weaker macroeconomic outlook.&nbsp;

However, FY24 (July 2023 to June 2024) is expected to be much better for Bangladesh, according to World Bank estimates.&nbsp;

Economic growth is expected to accelerate in FY24&nbsp;to around 6.5 percent over the medium term, as inflation&nbsp;eases, external economic conditions improve, and reform implementation gains momentum.&nbsp;

But structural reforms will be key to Bangladesh's economic recovery.&nbsp;

"Bangladesh needs to create jobs and employment opportunities by creating a competitive business environment, diversifying exports, increasing human capital, building efficient infrastructure, deepening the financial sector, and establishing an enabling policy environment that attracts private investment," noted World Bank's Bangladesh Development Update 2023.&nbsp;

IMF flags risks to Bangladesh economy as foreign reserves fall further

The IMF stated that due to inflation and the global economic slowdown, Bangladesh's foreign reserves and economic growth are in jeopardy. This declaration follows the IMF's just finished visits to Bangladesh in January of this year.

No causality or damage has been reported so far.&nbsp;

The independent organisation that provides earthquake information earlier mentioned that the quake was located 14km (8.7 miles) northeast of Bangladesh's capital city Dhaka at a magnitude of 4.3. The agency added that the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), Reuters reported.&nbsp;

In December 2022, a moderate earthquake of 5.2 magnitudes on the Richter scale jolted Dhaka and other states of the &nbsp;South Asian country. Another quake of magnitude 4 was felt in the capital city on April 25.&nbsp;

Experts quoted by TBS News stated that Bangladesh has gone 130 years without a major earthquake.

One earthquake that occurred on July 18, 1918, known as the "Srimagal Earthquake," had a 7.6 magnitude, making it to the deadliest list as it caused severe damage in Srimanngal, but minor damages in Dhaka were experienced.

Most of the construction in Dhaka does not comply with the building code, said Dr Mehedi Ahemd Ansary, a professor at the Department of civil engineering of Buet who specialises in geotechnical and earthquake engineering.

This means the whole city will be at risk if there is a major earthquake, Ansary told The Dhaka Tribune newspaper.&nbsp;

The independent organisation that provides earthquake information earlier mentioned that the quake was located 14km (8.7 miles) northeast of Bangladesh's capital city Dhaka at a magnitude of 4.3. The agency added that the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), Reuters reported. In December 2022, a moderate earthquake of 5.2 magnitudes on the Richter scale jolted Dhaka and other states of the South Asian country. Another quake of magnitude 4 was felt in the capital city on April 25. This means the whole city will be at risk if there is a major earthquake, Ansary told The Dhaka Tribune newspaper. He further predicted that if an earthquake of magnitude 7 hits the capital, at least 300,000 people may die. According to experts, almost 90 per cent of deaths from an earthquake happen when people are either trapped inside a building or if they do not know what to do when a quake strikes.
