Former judge and Awami League leader, Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu, is poised to become the next president of Bangladesh, as his party which secured a majority in the parliament has chosen him as their candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Notably, Chuppu would have to give up his post in the party to become the nominal head of the country. “Shahabuddin Chuppu was imprisoned following the brutal assassination of (Bangladesh’s founder) Bangabandhu Sheikh Majibur Rahman in 1975. He was also an election commissioner in the last National Council of the Awami League,” said Quader.

'I have killed a woman', desperate Bangladesh man surrounded by mob tells police

Bangladesh has asked Pakistan to apologise for atrocities committed by its forces in 1971. The matter came up during the meeting between Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and Pakistan's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar in Sri Lanka where the ministers were present to attend the Independence Day celebrations of the island nation.

A readout released by Bangladesh foreign ministry said, "Pakistan should formally apologise for the atrocities perpetrated against unarmed Bangalees in 1971".

In 1971, the then East Pakistan, which later became Bangladesh, saw a brutal crackdown by forces of West Pakistan. The protest started after the results of the national elections, which saw the Awami League, a political party based in East Pakistan, wining a majority in country's parliament. However, the military government in West Pakistan refused to hand over power to the Awami League, sparking widespread protests and unrest in East Pakistan.

During this time, tens of thousands of civilians were killed and other forms of violence and persecution was carried out by Pakistani forces. By December 16, 1971, the independence of Bangladesh was declared, with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of the Awami League, becoming its first president.

The meeting is the first such ministerial between the two sides in years. The two South Asian countries haven't seen much engagement. Last year, Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had made a stopover in Chittagong while going to Cambodia and was received by Bangladesh's Information minister Hasan Mahmood.

The International Monetary Fund's executive board has approved a 4.7 billion dollar support programme for Bangladesh. The country will be the first South Asian country to access IMF's new resilience and sustainability facility. The funding includes $3.3 billion under the IMF's extended credit facility and extended fund facility programs and $1.4 billion of the funding has been granted under the new resilience and sustainability facility. IMF says the 43-month borrowing package will enable greater social and developmental spending. It will boost fiscal and governance reforms and help preserve macroeconomic stability. The funding will help Bangladesh build economic resilience and protect vulnerable and foster clean and green growth. The funding from resilience and sustainability facility will also help support the country's climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Bangladesh's opposition parties led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) staged multiple public meetings at several places across Bangladesh as they continued their combined efforts to press Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down and announce fresh elections at the earliest. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced countrywide rallies and processions for January 16 to protest against yet-to-be-implemented plan of Dhaka to hike power prices.

It was said that the programmes will be observed in all metropolitan cities, districts, towns, upazilas and municipality headquarters.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that Prime Minister Hasina led Awami League was clinging to power by using police and bureaucrats. In process, Alamgir claimed that government in Dhaka was snatching peoples voting rights in the past two general elections.

"The people want freedom from this authoritarian regime," Alamgir said.

What is the BNP demanding?

The BNP is demanding Prime Minister Hasina’s resignation in favour of fresh elections under a caretaker government instead of ruling Awami League. The BNP claims that the polls to be rigged by Sheikh Hasina's administration. Bangladesh is scheduled to hold its next general election in 2024.

The BNP boycotted the 2014 and 2018 elections, but under a special provision, it allowed several of its leaders to take part in the last elections. BNP alleged that the elections that put Sheikh Hasina in power in 2018 and before that were rigged.

At a separate rally in the capital, senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas demanded a non-party caretaker government to hold a credible election.

"The time to cling to power by force is over."

Political analysts said the BNP has rallied significant support but the party was rudderless after its chairperson 77-year-old Khaleda Zia was convicted of two graft charges.

A court in 2017 sentenced her to a 17-year jail term and she spent months in prison.

Zia, a three-time Prime Minister, however, was allowed to stay at her home in Dhaka under a special government provision since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and debarred from joining any political activity.

Awami League won't fall: Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said that "the extreme rightist and leftist groups" were joining hands with the opposition BNP to try to oust her government.

"Now they (BNP) are saying they will wage a movement getting beside them the extreme leftists and rightists as companions," she told a party discussion, Press Trust of India reported.

"Let me tell you (BNP) one thing. The Awami League works for the people and their welfare. Don’t think it will fall if one shakes it. Things are not that easy."

Speaking at one of the rallies in Dhaka, announced countrywide rallies and processions for January 16 to press the party’s 10-point demand and protest the government’s plan to hike power prices. WATCH | WION Dispatch | India: Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to meet top leadership × The BNP boycotted the 2014 and 2018 elections, but under a special provision, it allowed several of its leaders to take part in the last elections. BNP alleged that the elections that put Sheikh Hasina in power in 2018 and before that were rigged. At a separate rally in the capital, senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas demanded a non-party caretaker government to hold a credible election. "The time to cling to power by force is over." Political analysts said the BNP has rallied significant support but the party was rudderless after its chairperson 77-year-old Khaleda Zia was convicted of two graft charges. Awami League won't fall: Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said that "the extreme rightist and leftist groups" were joining hands with the opposition BNP to try to oust her government. Things are not that easy." Ravichandran Ashwin and Umesh Yadav took four wickets each as India bowled out Bangladesh for 277 on Day 1 of the second Test match in Dhaka on Thursday. In response, India were 19 for no loss with skipper KL Rahul batting on three and fellow opener Shubman Gill unbeaten on 14 runs.

Rahul was trapped LBW by Shakib Al Hasan in the final over of Day 1 but the decision was overturned by the DRS review. Replays showed that the ball would have missed the leg stump.

For Bangladesh, Mominul Haque was the top scorer with 84 but the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Bangladesh looked comfortably placed in the encounter just after tea but the Shakib Al Hasan-led team lost their last five wickets for just 14 runs. While the Indian bowlers kept taking wickets, the final four batsmen in the Bangladesh line-up could not score more than six runs.

Unadkat took his maiden Test wicket in Zakir Hasan while Ashwin (4/71) and Umesh (4/25) kept the pressure constantly on Bangladesh. Although Mominul did keep the scoreboard ticking on one end, a superb spell of bowling post-tea from Umesh yielded three wickets and ended the hosts’ fight.

With focus on deciding the negotiation roadmap for India-Bangladesh Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), Bangladesh's commerce minister Tipu Munshi will be on India visit next week. He will hold talks with Indian trade minister Piyush Goyal on 22nd and 23rd December during the visit. Both countries have already finalised a Joint Feasibility Study when it comes to CEPA.

The CEPA pact, when signed, will be the first major such accord Dhaka has with any big country in Asia. The India-Bangladesh joint statement issued after Bangladesh PM Hasina's India visit earlier this year and meeting with PM Modi had a key emphasis on signing of the trade pact. The joint statement said that the leaders "directed trade officials on both sides to start negotiations within the calendar year 2022 and to complete these at the earliest, in time for Bangladesh’s final graduation from LDC status."

Bangladesh is India’s biggest trade partner in South Asia and India is the second biggest trade partner of Bangladesh in Asia. Despite the disruptions due to Covid pandemic, bilateral trade grew at almost 44% from US$ 10.78 billion in FY 2020-21 to US$ 18.14 billion in FY 2021-22. India is also Bangladesh’s largest export destination in Asia.

During the Bangladesh trade minister's visit, Dhaka's focus will also be on getting more essential items like wheat from India. Amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, prices of commodities globally have increased and New Delhi is reaching out to neighbours with supplies. To help low-income countries fight against price rise and shortage of foodstuff, India has exported more than 1.8 million tonnes of wheat to countries in need, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sudan, and Yemen.

Dhaka will also raise the issue of anti-dumping duties on Bangladesh's jute and jute-made products. India had imposed an anti-dumping duty on Bangladesh jute in January 2017 which has been extended till 31st December this year.

Kuldeep Yadav, a left-arm wrist-spinner, was named to Team India's playing XI for the first Test against Bangladesh. Indian team captained by KL Rahul India has begun the first of two Test series against Bangladesh at Chattogram. India won the toss and chose to bat first. Everything was game as usual but it was very special for Yadav who is tusted by KL Rahul for a place in the Indian team. Yadav's most recent appearance in the longest format was in 2021.

Yadav played during the second Test against England at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. Yadav's return to the Indian playing XI coincides with the spinner's 28th birthday, and the timing couldn't be more perfect. This is an excellent start for the Indian cricketer as he begins another chapter in his life.

KL Rahul, the stand-in skipper, chose three spinners, as did Bangladesh. Kuldeep beat out Shardul Thakur and Saurabh Kumar for a position as the team's third spinner, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel the apparent options to play in subcontinent conditions.

Kuldeep's career records and stats

Since his debut in the 2017 Border Gavaskar Series against Australia, the Uttar Pradesh-born spinner has made eight Test matches. While he had a promising start to his international red-ball career, he was unable to get into the starting XI due to India's vast pool of spinners. He recently appeared in the third One-Day International against Bangladesh as a late injury replacement. He concluded his ten overs with figures of 1-53. Fans expressed their excitement at Kuldeep's inclusion in India's playing XI.
