Former Pakistan Prime Minister is trying his best to make his Azadi March successful and in the latest the PTI Chief compared his struggle of freedom to Bangladesh's founder father Mujibur Rahman.

WION Dispatch: Former Pak PM Imran Khan draws parallels with Bangladesh's Mujibur Rahman in rally

Currently undertaking the 'Haqeeqi Azadi March' from the eastern city of Lahore to the capital city of Islamabad, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has made a rather intriguing comparison. In a speech during the march in Gujranwala, Khan compared himself and his party's struggle to that of Bangladesh's late founding father and Awami League chief Sheikh Mujibur Rehman. Leaning into the comparison, Khan said a country had split into two the last time a political party with a clear political mandate was denied the right to rule. “A shrewd politician (Zulfikar Ali Bhutto), in his greed for power, set the armed forces against the then largest party (Bangladesh’s Awami League), which had won elections, causing the dismemberment of the country," said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief. He egged his supporters by saying, "This is something way beyond politics, it is a war for freedom from these thieves that have been imposed over us. Cyclone Sitrang has claimed at least 24 lives and has forced evacuation of around a million people in Bangladesh, according to officials in the country.

Cyclones -- the equivalent of hurricanes in the Atlantic or typhoons in the Pacific -- are a regular menace but scientists say climate change is likely making them more intense and frequent.

Cyclone Sitrang made landfall in southern Bangladesh on Monday (October 24) but the authorities were able to evacuate about a million people to safety before the cyclone hit.

Around 10 million people were without power in districts along the coast on Tuesday, while schools were shut across much of the country's south.

Government official Jebun Nahar, who was quoted by AFP, said that 16 people have died. The deaths have occurred mostly because of falling trees. Two people were killed when their boat sank in Jamuna river in the north of the country.

"We still have not got all the reports of damages," Nahar told AFP.

Eight people are missing from a dredging boat that sank during the storm late Monday night in the Bay of Bengal, near the country's largest industrial park at Mirsarai, regional fire department chief Abdullah Pasha said.

"Strong wind flipped the dredger and it sank instantly in the Bay of Bengal," he told AFP, adding that divers were searching for survivors.
People evacuated from low-lying regions such as remote islands and river banks were moved to thousands of multi-storey cyclone shelters, Disaster Management Ministry secretary Kamrul Ahsan told AFP.

Ahsan said nearly 10,000 homes were either "destroyed or damaged" in the storm and around 1,000 shrimp farms had been washed away in floods.

Officials said that police, in some cases, had to cajole villagers who were not ready to leave their homes.

Trees were uprooted as far away as the capital Dhaka, hundreds of kilometres from the storm's centre.

Rilee Rossouw scored the first century of the Twenty20 World Cup and built a partnership of 163 with Quinton de Kock to drive South Africa to a thumping 104-run victory over Bangladesh on Thursday.

Muscular lefthander Rossouw pummelled eight sixes and seven fours around the Sydney Cricket Ground for his 109, while de Kock pitched in with 63 runs as the Proteas dodged the rain to rack up an imposing tally of 205 for five.

Paceman Anrich Nortje (4-10) took up where the batsmen let off with three top-order wickets, including that of dangerman Shakib Al Hasan for one, and Bangladesh were 66-5 after 10 overs and all out for 101 after 16.3.

"To score a hundred in a winning cause is fantastic," said Rossouw.

Having been robbed of a likely victory in their abandoned Super 12 opener by the rain in Hobart on Monday, South Africa again contended with the elements after winning the toss and choosing to bat in their second Group 2 contest.

Taskin's second over went for 21 runs and the South African pair had put on 60 by the time the rain returned to force a break just before the end of powerplay.

The innings stalled after De Kock holed out in the deep and Rossouw had a nervous moment when he was dropped on the boundary on 88 before reaching the century mark with a single off the 52nd delivery he faced.

Officials in Bangladesh on Wednesday (October 5) were investigating cause of nationwide power-cut that plunged more than 100 million people in dark and adversely hit vital garment sector and telecommunication services for 10 hours.

Government officials said that electricity was fully restored just before midnight on Tuesday.

"We suspect a transmission line experienced a technical glitch that led to a cascade of failures throughout the national power grid," Mohammad Hossain, the top official at the government's power cell division, told Reuters.

The grid malfunction took place at around 0800 GMT on Tuesday. It led to blackouts in about 80 per cent of the country.

Telecoms services and work in the lucrative export-oriented garment industry, which supplies to clients such as Gap Inc, H&M and Zara, ground to a halt.

Grid failures generally happen when there is a big mismatch between demand and supply, sometimes due to unexpected or sudden changes in power use patterns.

Power division secretary Habibur Rahman said officials were investigating the possibility that the failure originated in a substation near Ghorashal, 40 km (25 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.

With power restored, Bangladesh investigates nationwide blackout

On Tuesday, at least 130 million people were left without power across Bangladesh, the officials indicated. According to reports, the country’s power grid malfunctioned around 2:00 pm (local time) and this led to major blackouts across the nation of 168 million people affecting 75%-80% of the country.

Power Development Board official Shameen Hasan, told Reuters, that the utilities are producing around 4,500 megawatts of power for a country that demands 14,200 megawatts of power. Additionally, power demand peaked on Tuesday and went higher than 3% of what was forecasted, indicated the government data.

Except for some locations in Bangladesh's northwest "the rest of the country is without power" said the power board spokesperson. Hasan also went on to indicate that the cause of the fault remains unclear and an investigation on the matter is underway. The technical malfunction was the likely reason, he added.

On the other hand, Junior technology minister Zunaid Palak took to Facebook and said that power should be restored in the country’s capital city, Dhaka by 8:00 pm (local time). The city is home to more than 22 million people.

This comes amid Bangladesh facing a major power crisis due to the rise in global energy prices due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. The south Asian country is already facing frequent power cuts, which has caused a public uproar in the past couple of months. The power cuts lasted up to 13 hours in the month of July. Reportedly, Dhaka has been forced to impose power cuts to conserve electricity.

On Sunday, at least 24 people were killed and dozens went missing after a ferry carrying nearly 50 pilgrims capsized in a river in Bangladesh, said the police. Meanwhile, at least 10 victims have been rescued and taken to the hospital, reported the local media.

“Firefighters and divers are searching for more bodies,” said the local police officer, Shafiqul Islam. The incident reportedly took place in the middle of the Karotoa river in the northern region of the country.

The bodies recovered till now included women and children, said Jahurul Islam, district administrator of northern Panchagarh. He added, “The rescue operation for those missing is ongoing.” A video of the incident shows the overcrowded boat suddenly flipped and the people fell into the muddy water while dozens of people standing on the banks started screaming and shouting.

According to the local police, the boat was packed with 50 Hindu pilgrims. Reportedly, hundreds of people die every year in Bangladesh because of ferry accidents, which have been attributed to it being a low-lying delta country on the course of two rivers Ganga and Brahmaputra.

Bangladesh also has an extensive network of 230 rivers. Naval officers have also indicated that 95% of the thousands of small and medium-sized boats do not meet any safety regulations. These boats are then overloaded with people making these accidents a common sight.

Every year, thousands of Hindu pilgrims make their way to the Bodeshwari Temple, which was the case today too, as it marks the beginning of Durga Puja, one of the biggest Hindu festivals in the Muslim-majority country.

In May, earlier this year, 26 people died after an overcrowded speed boat collided with a bulk carrier carrying sand at the time and sank on the Padma River, one of the major rivers in the country. In December 2021, at least 40 people were killed after a three-storey ferry caught fire. In the month of June, last year, a collision between two vessels led to the death of at least 32 people.

Morning news brief: US, China hold talks on Taiwan, India slams Pakistan & more

After Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif took a rather subtle dig at western nations for climate change affecting his country in his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina took a similar approach and targeted the rich countries.

After Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif took a rather subtle dig at western nations for climate change affecting his country in his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina took a similar approach and targeted the rich countries. "They don't act. They can talk but they don't act. The rich countries, the developed countries, this is their responsibility. They should come forward. But we are not getting that much response from them. That is the tragedy," the Bangladesh PM told AFP. Stating that rich countries do not bother, Hasina added, "I know the rich countries, they want to become more rich and rich. They don't bother for others." Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries lying in a region which puts it in the most vulnerable category of nations expected to be affected by climate change. Hasina also called out the western nations for not coming through on raising $100 billion a year for developing nations to cope with climate change, as enshrined in the Paris accord. "We want that fund to be raised. Unfortunately, we didn't get a good response from the developed countries. Because they are the responsible ones for these damages, they should come forward," she further added. Earlier, the Pakistan PM, in an outburst talked about the climate catastrophe his country was facing and how the emissions from western countries were primarily the reason for it. "What happened in Pakistan will not stay in Pakistan. Pakistan has never seen a more stark and devastating example of the impact of global warming. Life in Pakistan has changed forever," said Sharif. Read more: Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif launches anti-India tirade at UNGA, yet claims he wants 'peace' "Why are my people paying the price of such high global warming through no fault of their own? Nature has unleashed her fury on Pakistan without looking at our carbon footprint, which is next to nothing," added Sharif. The UNGA has become a platform for the South Asian countries to show the mirror to the western nations on their hypocrisy on climate change. There have been growing demands from countries in the developing world to hold the rich and developed nations accountable for their flawed plans to tackle climate change. The voices are now asking for reparations from the rich and developed countries as well. As reported by WION, earlier this month, Pakistan's federal climate minister Sherry Rehman argued that the western nations owe developing nations reparations for accelerating climate change. Read more: Western countries owe reparations to developing nations facing climate change, says Pakistan minister “There is so much loss and damage with so little reparations to countries that contributed so little to the world’s carbon footprint that obviously the bargain made between the global north and global south is not working," said Rehman. Rehman in clear terms batted for a reset of targets and asserted that “richer countries must do more”. “Historic injustices have to be heard and there must be some level of climate equation so that the brunt of the irresponsible carbon consumption is not being laid on nations near the equator which are obviously unable to create resilient infrastructure on their own," added Rehman. In order to push Levi's to sign on to an international accord for workers’ health and safety in Pakistan and Bangladesh, activists have been campaigning against the company.

Behind China, Bangladesh is the second largest exporter of clothing in the world. Approximately 1,134 people died in Bangladesh in 2013 while 2,500 were injured in the deadliest disaster in the garment industry’s history.

As a result, an international accord was signed by more than 170 fashion brands which safety and worker health provisions beyond electrical, fire and structural inspections.

However, Levi's is yet to sign the accord and the Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation along with Remake have formed a partnership to pressure the company into doing so.

Also read | Bangladesh seeks bailout package from IMF as huge import bill takes toll on economy

'The Guardian' quoted Ayesha Barenblat, founder and CEO of Remake as saying “The newly expanded international accord looks beyond building safety. So it is really a lifeline and a way for workers to share any wellbeing or workplace concerns.”

“We abjectly push back on the alleged effectiveness of Levi’s own safety programme. The reason being that garment worker themselves have said – through Covid-19 [and] against the backdrop of the economic slowdown – their lives, and their wellbeing have simply been threatened and they do not have a direct line to the brands,” Barenblat said.

From sending emails to delivering letters, the activists have been trying their level best to fulfil their aim.

Raising issues of heat exhaustion and forced overtime, workers have also accused Levi’s of free-riding off the accord.

Citing several internal programmes and efforts, Levi’s denied and disputed all complaints from the campaign and allegations of worker safety and health issues.

“We agree with the intent and the spirit of the international accord and applaud the progress it has made. But it is not the only way to support workers in Bangladesh or anywhere else. We believe our programs, with their checks and balances, help us go further and give us greater agility to implement new learnings and expand our systems in other countries (which we are actively doing),” a spokesperson for Levi’s said.

Last month, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch made an arrest acting on a tip which led to the discovery of an entire cell phone theft racket and uncovered how the city-based courier companies and villagers along the Indo-Bangladesh border were smuggling stolen cellphones across the border. By the end of August, the police were able to recover nearly 800 mobiles and arrest 21 people.

According to the sources, the high-end stolen phones would eventually be smuggled to countries like Nepal and Bangladesh while the old ones would keep circulating in India. In June 2022, constable Sambhaji Kolekar working at the Mumbai crime branch received a tip that a resident in the city was buying lost or stolen cellphones. Subsequently, a team was formed to verify how the operation was working.

Earlier this year, by July 15, the team was reportedly able to recover at least 490 smartphones and arrest the two accused. However, by the next month, the team would have recovered over 600 devices and arrested 12 people in connection with this racket. The police said that these phones “were stolen on buses or snatched by bike-borne perpetrators”.

The prime accused and his modus operandi

One of the perpetrators arrested in August was a villager from Tripura, a state close to the border, who told the police how the stolen phones were smuggled into Bangladesh. According to police sources, once the device is stolen from Mumbai its images and details are uploaded on a WhatsApp group which also has people from Bangladesh and Nepal. Subsequently, the selected phones are then packed in boxes and sent to Bangladesh.

According to the Mumbai police, one of the seven gang members and the prime accused of the racket is Ashfaq Ahmed Abdul Aziz Sheikh. “On the surface, he was a teacher at a Madarasa but in reality, he was a prime receiver of stolen phones. He was sending the phones to Nepal and Bangladesh through his contacts,” an officer told the media.

Sheikh was a part of 43 WhatsApp groups where he auctioned the handsets to people in Nepal and Bangladesh after changing the IMEI numbers. Reportedly, his wife and son live in Nepal where he has a bank account which had received Rs. 8 lakh from Nepal and Rs. 6 lakh from Bangladesh respectively, said the police. However, he and his gang members also bought stolen cell phones from mobile snatchers who operate across the financial capital.

“The boxes are then sent to a south Mumbai-based courier company, which has an Agartala, Tripura, address. The accused would collect the order in Agartala and pass it through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border, which is covered with jungles,” said the local police. They added that three people who would collect these stolen phones and sell them in Bangladesh have been identified.

The reason why these stolen cell phones are sold outside India is so that criminals do not have to spend money on erasing the IMEI number, which is traceable by law enforcement in the country. “Once the phone goes to another country, the IMEI number does not have much use for law enforcement agencies,” said the officer with knowledge of the matter.

Recent developments

The police have now managed to recover cell phones that are worth nearly a crore rupees. On the other hand, while the officers have identified the three culprits from Bangladesh they need additional evidence to hand over the case to Bangladeshi authorities for them to take action against these people, said the authorities.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) seized mobile phones that were worth nearly Rs. 40 lakh in West Bengal’s Malda district which is a part of the state that is close to the Bangladesh-India International Border (IB). Reportedly, the consignment seized on Friday had at least 359 cell phones.

The BSF intelligence had been tracking the movement of these smugglers when the troops saw about “10 to 12 suspected smugglers moving towards fencing with bundles when the force reached there…the smugglers fled with the help of thick darkness and bushes. After that the jawans launched a special search operation, during the search, eight bags were recovered in the pit of soil near fencing.”

The authorities with the BSF have indicated that the names of many Indian smugglers have also emerged and an FIR has been lodged against them at the local police station. The cell phones have also been handed over to the police for further investigation and legal action said the BSF.

A 15-year-old Rohingya boy was killed and at least six people were injured when mortar shells fired from Myanmar exploded in Bangladesh, the latest in a series of violent incidents, officials and a Rohingya leader said.

More than a million Rohingya are living in camps in southern Bangladesh that comprise the world's largest refugee settlement, the vast majority having fled from Myanmar during a military crackdown in 2017.

The Rohingya have been caught in the crossfire between Myanmar's military and the Arakan Army, an armed group fighting for self-determination for ethnic minorities in the Rakhine state.

The teenager was killed late on Friday, said Dil Mohammed, a Rohingya leader in no man's land, a strip of land along the Myanmar-Bangladesh border where an estimated 4,000 Rohingya live. "We are living here in constant fear. Anytime any catastrophe can happen," Mohammed told Reuters by phone.

Strong protests would be lodged with Myanmar over the incident, a Bangladesh government official and border guard official said.

Bangladesh this month issued a statement expressing "deep concern over falling mortar shells inside Bangladesh territory, indiscriminate aerial firing from Myanmar in the bordering areas, and air space violation from Myanmar".

The Myanmar envoy in Dhaka has been summoned three times in recent weeks so that those concerns could be conveyed.

At around 11:30 am, some angry students blocked the Farmgate and Bijoy Sarani crossings and protested there for two hours, demanding both a speedy trial for those responsible for the death of their fellow student and safe roadways.

The protesters carried signs that said, "We want justice" and "We want safe roads," New Age reported.

In a news release, the Socialist Chhatra said that their activists were injured in an attack by the ruling party student wing after the protest.
