Nearly 350 million children are struggling with “high or extremely high water scarcity” in South Asia, the highest number among all regions in the world, according to a report by the United Nations children’s agency, on Monday (Nov 13). Severe water scarcity has also worsened due to the impacts of climate change.&nbsp;

The report also noted how water scarcity affects a child’s well-being and growth and causes food insecurity, malnutrition, and a number of other diseases.&nbsp;

“A staggering 347 million children under 18 are exposed to high or extremely high water scarcity in South Asia, the highest number among all regions in the world,” said UNICEF in its recent report.&nbsp;

It added, “When village wells go dry, homes, health centres and schools are all affected. With an increasingly unpredictable climate, water scarcity is expected to become worse for children in South Asia.”

Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled of Bangladesh's last league match of the World Cup 2023 with a fracture suffered during the win against Sri Lanka on November 6 in New Delhi. Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan confirmed the same after the match.&nbsp;

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers," he said.

"He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab,” he added.

Shakib, nonetheless, led from the front like a skipper and guided his team home with an innings of 82 off 65 balls. He also took a couple of wickets during Sri Lanka innings and was adjudged Player of the Match for his performance.

The game, however, will be remembered for Sri Lanka batter Angelo Mathews' controversial dismissal. Mathews became the first batter in cricket history to be timed out.

Coming out to bat at No. 6, Mathews could not take the crease within the required amount of time, prompting the Bangladesh players to appeal. A disgruntled Mathews returned to the dugout, threw his helmet in disgust and held a brief chat with head coach Chris Silverwood.&nbsp;

The dismissal divided the cricketing world yet again as some fans stood in Mathews' defence while others lauded the Bangladesh captain for displaying presence of mind.

Chasing 280, Bangladesh then rode on the fifties by Najmul Hossain Shanto (90) and Shakib and won the match by three wickets. The players from both the team didn't shake hands after the game as the tempers flared all around.

Both the sides, however, defended their decisions at the post-match conference, leaving the rivalry between two nations even more intense than earlier.

Bangladesh&nbsp;police have arrested nearly 8,000 opposition figures in a nationwide crackdown since officers broke up a major rally in the capital a week ago, a report said Sunday (Nov 5).

The sweeping wave of detentions comes ahead of a general election due in January.

The country's major opposition,&nbsp;Bangladesh&nbsp;Nationalist Party (BNP), and its allies have been staging giant rallies in recent months demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina step down and allow a neutral government to supervise the vote.

Hasina has overseen impressive growth in her 15 years of power, but she has been accused of ruling the South Asian nation with an iron fist.

The United States has imposed sanctions on some of its most senior police figures for widespread human rights violations.

More than 100,000 opposition supporters joined a "grand rally" in central Dhaka last Saturday, when a policeman was killed in clashes.

Since then police have launched a widespread crackdown on the BNP, arresting thousands of activists and accusing at least 162 of its top leaders of murdering the officer.

On Sunday the country's Rapid Action Battalion, arrested BNP vice president Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, a former home minister and air force chief.

The arrests came as BNP has enforced a new 48-hour long nationwide transport blockade as part of its new anti-government protests, bringing inter-city bus and lorry transport almost to a halt.

At least 11 buses were torched over the weekend, a fire service spokesman said.

Police say that as well as the officer, at least four people have been killed since last Saturday, while according to the BNP at least nine of its activists have died and more than 3,000 been injured.

The resurgent opposition has been mounting protests against Hasina since September last year, despite its ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia being effectively under house arrest since her release from prison after a conviction on corruption charges.

Hasina's ruling Awami League dominates the legislature in&nbsp;Bangladesh&nbsp;and runs it virtually as a rubber stamp.

Her&nbsp;security forces are accused of detaining tens of thousands of opposition activists, killing hundreds in extrajudicial encounters and disappearing hundreds of leaders and supporters.

Thousands of garment workers in Bangladesh, who have been protesting for a week to demand a near-tripling of wages, clashed with police on Saturday (Nov 4) near the capital city of Dhaka as garment factories reopened in defiance of the protest.

Thousands of garment workers in Bangladesh, who have been protesting for a week to demand a near-tripling of wages, clashed with police on Saturday (Nov 4) near the capital city of Dhaka as garment factories reopened in defiance of the protest. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the clashes broke out in the industrial town of Ashulia, west of Dhaka, after around 10,000 workers attempted to prevent their colleagues from returning to their shifts. Speaking to AFP, Ashulia police chief Mohammad Sarowar Alam said that the striking garment workers hurled stones and bricks at officers and tried to block roads. "We dispersed them by firing tear gas," Alam said, adding that 1,500 security personnel had been deployed in Ashulia and nearby Savar to keep order. On Monday, protests were also held in Ashulia, Gazipur and Hemayetpur. Protests halt production for top fashion brands There are a total of 3,500 garment factories in Bangladesh which account for around 85 per cent of the country's $55 billion exports, supplying many of the top global brands including Zara, Levi's and H&M. Since the beginning of the protests, dozens of factories have been ransacked by the protesting workers, and several hundred other factories have been shut down by their owners to avoid vandalism. Among them are "many of the country's bigger factories, who make clothing for almost all major Western brands and retailers," Kalpona Akter, president of the Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF), told AFP. "They include Gap, Walmart, H&M, Zara, Inditex, Bestseller, Levi's, Marks and Spencer, Primark and Aldi," Akter added. Garment workers have said that a sharp increase in living costs has left them struggling to provide for their families. AFP reported on Saturday that the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), which represents factory owners, has offered workers a 25 per cent pay raise. However, this is significantly short of the $209 (23,000 taka) monthly wage that the protests called for. Akter also told the news agency that brands and retailers only care about smooth shipments and profits, and are not concerned about the well-being of the workers, many of whom are half-starving. Bangladesh: Garment workers clash with police during protests

Political violence in Bangladesh is on its way up as the opposition staged massive protests against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government. Violent clashes broke out between cops and protesters. The opposition is demanding that PM Hasina step down on charges of human rights abuses and election rigging. Demands have also arisen for a neutral caretaker government to take the country through general elections less than 3 months away.

Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been one of the few bright spots in the team's dismal campaign at the ODI World Cup 2023. Miraz, who had been batting in good form prior to the World Cup, was tried at several positions by the team management but said that he'd prefer the middle order.

Batting at five different positions in the ODI World Cup, Miraz said: "Look I always want to bat in the middle order and I am playing in different positions due to team combination and certainly it becomes difficult for me because you have to see for the last seven years I have played as a lower middle-order batter and I know how to play in that position."

He made the comments following Bangladesh's seven-wicket loss against Pakistan on October 31 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The all-rounder has scored 169 runs in seven innings with one fifty - fourth-most for Bangladesh in the ODI World Cup. However, he says&nbsp;he'd have to perform wherever he gets a chance.&nbsp;

"But I think rather than thinking about it if we want to prove as a batter I have to perform wherever I am given a chance and at that point team will have an expectation that I can perform wherever I bat," he said.

"The thing that you said where I will bat in the next game is totally dependent on the team combination and, before the game, the decision is taken by team management who will bat where in the batting order and this is done for the sake of the team. Whoever can play, chances are given to him. It is just that we are not clicking and we don't want to blame anyone like one or two guys played badly because we all played badly and we are accepting it," added Miraz.

Bangladesh's World Cup 2023 campaign may have been over after their loss against Pakistan but they still have something to play for - a place in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The eight-team event will have the top eight teams of the ODI World Cup 2023 and Bangladesh currently are ninth on the points table.

Opposition BNP has staged a string of protests against the ruling Sheikh Hasina government demanding it step down and make way for an interim non-political party administration that will ensure a free and fair election. The pre-poll caretaker government issue has remained a contentious one for years, with the BNP alleging massive rigging over successive elections in its absence.

There is a lot of content available on the premiers of India and Pakistan- Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohammad Ali Jinnah. In history books, in cinema- the incidents that led to the partition, the inception of Pakistan and the Hindu-Muslim riots that took place during the partition have been well documented in cinema over the years. While the history of these two countries of the subcontinent is known to most, the third country- also a by-product of the 1947 Partition has been overlooked especially in cinema. Bangladesh's history is also known to many especially how it took India's help in declaring itself free and sovereign in 1971, yet its history and its leaders are not known to many. Which is why Shyam Benegal's new film Mujib: The Making of A Nation serves as a perfect refresher of history for a generation who may not know about the country's dynamic leader, first President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.&nbsp;

Known as the father of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujib's contribution in the formation of the country is unsurmountable. And available on the internet widely if one looks for it. Benegal's film stars popular Bangladeshi actor Arifin Shuvoo as the leader and captures the life of Mujib from his high school days to his days in student politics and highlights the incidents and causes that led to East Pakistan's demanded to break away from West Pakistan.&nbsp;

With a linear narrative and Mujib's wife Renu (Nusrat Imrose Tisha) playing the narrator, the nearly three-hour film tries to pack in a lot of Bangladesh history. The linear narrative almost spills out like a Wikipedia page, chronicling years of Mujib's struggle and his passion to see a free, sovereign Bangladesh. Since the film is backed by both the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation and the National Film Development Corporation of India, it obviously resorts to highlighting India's positive role in being the ally during the 1971 war. It also spares no moment to bash Pakistan in more ways than one.&nbsp;

Written by Atul Tiwari, and Shama Zaidi the film tries to capture a whole lot of events. From Mujib's first encounter with his political mentor Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy (Tauquir Ahmed) to his close association with Fazlul Haq, whom he considered a father figure to the formation of the Awami League, the Partition, Mujib's innumerable visits to the jail, his rise in politics, Jinnah and Bhutto's role in Bangladesh, his growing family - all are stuffed in the film - making the narrative overcrowded with characters and slightly daunting to watch.&nbsp;

It also doesn't help that apart from the lead actors, every supporting actor seems to overreact and overact. The actor who plays the younger brother to the lead looks older than him, there is just a lot of melodrama and the screenplay is shoddy and looks dated. The lead, Arifin Shuvoo, with prosthetics and a wig delivers well to his part. I am from a generation who has never watched the real Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and heard his speeches. Only saw his pictures and heard of his greatness. For me, Arifin's performance seems genuine and praiseworthy and he alone shoulders the film well. His wife Renu, played by Tisha is also credible in her performance as a wife who is the anchor of Mujib's life. In fact, the film showcases the couple's friendship and love in detail with him always finding his way to her for emotional support while she plays the anchor in his otherwise tumultuous life.&nbsp;

<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Kld89lCBI2Q?si=w1TYHxs68e3lc8_b" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>

Much like the screenplay, Mujib's production levels are also subpar and one can make out that everything has been shot either on set or in front of the green screen. The VFX is laughable and overall the film looks very poor in quality. Considering there are so many critically acclaimed films being produced in Bangladesh at the moment, it is baffling to see that the government was okay to back a subpar biopic on the greatest leader of the country. It is more heartbreaking to watch Mujib knowing that it is the veteran Shyam Benegal's film- a man who is credited as the father of parallel cinema in India, a man who has won so many accolades for his previous work.

Mujib: The Making Of Nation is well intended. It is an important lesson of history and of a man who is not so widely discussed or known by the current generation. In that sense, Bengal's film serves well. But I do wish that they had invested more in making the film look good and more engrossing. A biopic backed by two countries surely deserved more quality than quantity (in this case the length). It also deserved better production value and better writing.&nbsp;
