<p>Australia Deputy Prime minister and Defence minister Richard Marles has termed India as the centre of 'global cricket' even as he pointed that the game is 'emblematic of the relationship.' The Deputy PM was present at the Ahmedabad stadium during the 2023 ODI World Cup final, representing his country. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he&nbsp;shared his views on what cricket means for both countries and how it binds the two nations together.</p>

<p><strong>Sidhant Sibal:</strong> First question on cricket, Australia won and India obviously played well throughout the ODI World Cup, but how was it at the Narendra Modi stadium on Sunday, the electrifying atmosphere?</p>

<p><strong>Richard Marles:</strong> It was an incredible, extraordinary experience for me. I was not expecting that. The teams played an amazing game on just the most extraordinary stage. It is the biggest cricket ground in the world, completely full and never heard the noise like that. When the first few Australian wickets fell, we were getting a bit nervous there and noise of the crowd was astounding. I spoke to the Australian cricketers after that in the dressing room, if they had heard something like before. What is clear now that for Australia Cricket, India is so familiar. All players play here in the IPL. They all said that they have heard noise like that in various IPL games. It's there second home in so many ways. It does speak through cricket, how relationship between the two countries has evolved so significantly.</p>

Richard Marles: It was an incredible, extraordinary experience for me. I was not expecting that. The teams played an amazing game on just the most extraordinary stage. It is the biggest cricket ground in the world, completely full and never heard the noise like that. When the first few Australian wickets fell, we were getting a bit nervous there and noise of the crowd was astounding. I spoke to the Australian cricketers after that in the dressing room, if they had heard something like before. What is clear now that for Australia Cricket, India is so familiar. All players play here in the IPL. They all said that they have heard noise like that in various IPL games. It's there second home in so many ways. <p>Five-time champions Australia are back on track for a last-four spot having won three matches on the trot after an unimpressive start which saw them lose their first two games.</p>

<p>New&nbsp;Zealand, runners-up in the last two World Cups, have the better record so far with four wins from five games.</p>

<p>"We've played a lot of cricket with these guys and some of them are really good mates. If anything, it makes you want to beat your mates even more. It will be intense out there."</p>

<p>In 2015,&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealand&nbsp;edged a low-scoring group game by one wicket in Auckland before Australia gained revenge with a seven-wicket stroll in the final.</p>

<p>Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood are all survivors from the 2015 final. Cummins played in the group game.</p>

<p>Current&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealand&nbsp;squad members Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Tim Southee also played that final.</p>

<p>"It always seems like there's great contests. And on a personal note, as well, we know a lot of the&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealand&nbsp;guys, we have played a lot against them and with them. So, it's always good fun," added Cummins.</p>

<p>Cummins said he was delighted by Australia over-coming early losses at this World Cup to India and South Africa.</p>

<p>They have since seen off Sri Lanka, Pakistan and then the Netherlands by a huge 309 runs.</p>

<p>"I think in the first two games not only did we not win, but I think we didn't really nail the style that we wanted to play," said the captain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think in the last few games you've seen us be a bit more aggressive - batting and bowling."</p>

<p>Most of the aggression in the rout of the Dutch came from Glenn Maxwell who hit the fastest World Cup century off just 40 balls in&nbsp;New&nbsp;Delhi on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Cummins shared a 103-run partnership with Maxwell, contributing only eight runs.</p>

<p>"Yeah, that was just insane the other night," said Cummins.</p>

<p>Former Australia cricketer and ex-Indian men's team coach Greg Chappell is going through a rough financial situation because of which a fundraiser page has been set up for him. The former Aussie cricketer, however, admits that he isn't in 'desperate straits' but isn't living in the&nbsp;'lap of luxury' either.</p>

<p>Speaking to media outlet NewsCorp, Chappell said: “I’m not on the bones of my a**e. I certainly don’t want it to sound like we’re in desperate straits, because we’re not — but we’re not living in luxury either. I think most people assume that, because we played cricket, that we are all living in the lap of luxury. While I’m certainly not crying poor, we’re not reaping in the benefits that today’s players are.”</p>

<p>Chappell also said that it was his friends who wanted him and his wife, Judy, to set up for retirement as they didn't get a lot of money after retiring.</p>

<p>“To be fair, there are others of our era who are in more dire circumstances that could do with the help and I don’t think the game has done enough for players of that era. Particularly in relation to the comparison with today’s era.”</p>

<p>“I believe the players that set the scene for what’s happening today, should probably be recognised for the role they played in getting the game to where it is today,” he added.</p>

<p>Chappell played 87 Tests for Australia from 1970 to 1984, scoring 7,110 runs, with 24 hundreds and 31 fifties to his name.</p>

Greg Chappell, former Australia player, going through financial crunch as friends set up fund-raising campaign

<p>The 2003 World Cup final had a catastrophic effect on every Indian cricket fan. As disappointing as it was for every ardent&nbsp;fan of the nation, it made me -- back then, an 11-year-old kid -- fall madly in love with the sport. There was no turning back from there.</p>

<p>Before the 2003 debacle, I saw Team India win the NatWest Trophy. For me, 2004 is still vividly etched in my memory&nbsp;for India's historic tour of Pakistan whereas the coming years just added more memories. Thus, becoming a sports journalist has been on my bucket list since then. Obviously, the dream of representing India would have been much better. However, that bus&nbsp;sadly left due to&nbsp;sheer laziness during my college days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Come 2016, I got my first job. I officially entered the sports journalism industry. Growing up watching India win the home ODI World Cup&nbsp;in 2011 motivated me enough to cover the mega event in 2023 -- when the tournament returned to Indian shores. Come Oct 25 (Wednesday), that dream was&nbsp;fulfilled. I was part of the media box for the Australia versus Netherlands group stage tie at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In my books, the 50-over World Cup is the biggest sporting event in cricket history," said Rohit.</p>

<p>"This is the biggest event that I will be part of and being the captain is a huge honour," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It was always a dream to be part of the World Cup and then now to be part of the team and then the captain, it's a big deal for me."</p>

<p>But the job comes with the expectations of a billion fans in cricket-mad India who expect nothing less than a second tournament win at home.</p>

<p>"How you handle that pressure, handle those moments during the game...and not to let that pressure come on to the team" was top of Rohit's mind, he said.</p>

<p>"Everyone is very aware of that, so there is no point talking about pressure, pressure, pressure. We try and keep the external factors aside and focus on what you want to do."</p>

<p>Shubman Gill is still recovering from dengue fever and unlikely to play the team's opener but Rohit said he was "not ruled out".</p>

Former Australia spinner Stuart MacGill charged with drug supply

<p>Australia batsman David Warner has gone past Sachin Tendulkar to record most ODI hundreds as an opener across formats. The southpaw reached the milestone in second ODI against South Africa on Saturday, September 9 during the ongoing five-match series.</p>

<p>Warner, who made his debut for Australia in 2009, has played all his career as an opener, and now has 46 centuries to his name - 20 in ODIs, 25 in Tests and one in T20Is. Sachin, on the other hand, has 45 centuries to his name as an opener - all in ODIs, out of his 100 international tons. Warner also has second most ODI hundreds for Australia behind Ricky Ponting who tops the list with 29.</p>

<p>Speaking about his numbers, Warner has played in 144 ODI in his career, scoring 6,136 runs at an average of 45 and with a high score of 179. In Tests, Warner is a force to reckon with, having scored 8,487 runs in 199 innings of 109 matches at an average of 44 and with a highest of 335. The opening batsman has also played 99 T20Is, scoring 2,894 runs at an average of 32.88 with a highest of 100.</p>

<p>As for Tendulkar, the legendary batsman has scored all his 100 tons in only ODIs and Tests. After making his debut in 1989, Tendulkar started to open batting in 1994 in ODIs and went on to score 45 of his 49 tons at that position. In Tests, the master blaster has 51 tons.</p>

<p>As for the match, Warner's belligerent ton and then a sublime century by Marnus Labuschagne helped Australia post a mammoth 392/8 in their 50 overs. Apart from two centurions, Travis Head's 36-ball 64 and Josh Inglis's 37-ball 50 also deflated the Protea fast bowlers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For the home team, Tabrez Shamsi was the pick of the bowlers who took four wickets for 61 runs in his 10 overs. Australia currently lead five-match series 1-0.</p>

<p>England and Australia have been docked points in double digits for slow over rates during the recently-concluded Ashes 2023. While the five-Test series ended in a 2-2 stalemate, the fines were not so equal, with England being docked 19 points and Australia getting away with 10 docked points.</p>

<p>After adjusting the points, England managed to get just nine points in the Test series while Australia managed 18 in the World Test Championship cycle. Each series in the WTC offers a maximum of 60 points which means both England and Australia managed 24 each for the two games won by each of them.</p>

<p>The drawn Test in Manchester saw England and Australia both getting four points each, taking both sides to 28 each before the fines came in. As per the rules of the International Cricket Council (ICC), one point gets docked from the total points for each over bowled less in the stipulated time by the teams.</p>

Carey added 14 runs more to his overnight tally of 52 before becoming Anderson's 1100th First Class wicket. <p>The ball, which came out of Anderson's hand with a wobbling seam, bounced on good length before nipping back in. Carey had played the ball for the inward movement but, the cherry moved a bit more and snuck past his defence. The ball hit his back pad before dislodging the bail stationary on middle and off stump. Ashes 2023: James Anderson bowls MAGICAL ball to dismiss Alex Carey for 1100th First Class wicket | WATCH

<p>Australia have roped in the services of former England coach Andy Flower on a consultancy basis on the eve of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Oval in London. The WTC final, which will start on Wednesday, June 7, will see Flower share the dressing room with Aussie skipper Pat Cummins and co while Andrew McDonald will continue his role as the head coach. Flower holds a good reputation for helping English Test cricket grow and helped England beat Australia three times in his five-year stint.</p>

<h2><strong>Flower in Aussie ranks</strong></h2>

<p>"[He brings] experience over here, first of all, and knows these conditions really well. Hopefully, he knows the opposition, so if he can give us one little bit of insight into playing in England that we haven't thought about then it's worth it,” Cummins said.</p>

<p>"I think Andrew [McDonald] has worked with him quite a bit, and you've seen us over the years bring in different people at different times. We're pretty lucky to have someone as experienced as Andy."</p>

<p>Flower’s inclusion in the Australian team will come as a huge boost for them, having helped England win the Ashes in 2009, 2010-11, and 2013. The 2010-11 Ashes win was the last time the holy grail was won away from home. Flower was the man at the helm for the English side on that occasion. He parted ways with England after the 2013-14 Ashes when England lost 0-5.</p>

<p>It is also interesting to know that Flower is still contracted to English Cricket Board, having led Trent Rockets to the Hundred title in 2022. Unlike other domestic leagues in the world, the franchises in England are governed by the central board and have therefore kept Flower in their payroll.</p>

<p>Flower’s experience could also come as a vital tool for Australia in the WTC final where India and Australia will meet on Wednesday. Knowing English conditions can give an added advantage to Australia while India are struggling with injuries.</p>

The WTC final, which will start on Wednesday, June 7, will see Flower share the dressing room with Aussie skipper Pat Cummins and co while Andrew McDonald will continue his role as the head coach. Flower holds a good reputation for helping English Test cricket grow and helped England beat Australia three times in his five-year stint. Flower in Aussie ranks "[He brings] experience over here, first of all, and knows these conditions really well. Hopefully, he knows the opposition, so if he can give us one little bit of insight into playing in England that we haven't thought about then it's worth it,” Cummins said. "I think Andrew [McDonald] has worked with him quite a bit, and you've seen us over the years bring in different people at different times. We're pretty lucky to have someone as experienced as Andy." Flower’s inclusion in the Australian team will come as a huge boost for them, having helped England win the Ashes in 2009, 2010-11, and 2013. The 2010-11 Ashes win was the last time the holy grail was won away from home. Flower was the man at the helm for the English side on that occasion. <p>Australia's women cricketers secured a huge pay increase Monday, with the top contracted player on course to earn more than Aus$1 million (US$666,000) a year.</p>

<p>Payments for professional women will rise 66 percent under a new five-year deal between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers' Association.</p>

<p>They will share in a pool worth Aus$133 million, up from Aus$80 million in the previous agreement, rewarding not only members of Australia's world champion team but significantly increasing the value of Big Bash League and state contracts.</p>

<p>That could break the Aus$1 million mark with further earnings in India's Women's Premier League and The Hundred in England.</p>

<p>The next six contracted players will earn an average Aus$500,000.</p>

<p>Those who do not play for Australia, but compete in the Women's National Cricket League and WBBL, will be paid more than Aus$151,000 annually.</p>

<p>"I am particularly pleased this MOU (memorandum of understanding) represents another major step forward in the rise of women's cricket," said CA chief Nick Hockley.</p>

<p>"(There are) significant increases in remuneration for the inspirational role models of the world champion Australian women's team and the WBBL who are driving substantial growth in female participation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Cricket now clearly offers the best earning opportunities of any team sport for elite female sportspeople."</p>

<p>The deal will also see the number of CA men's contracts increase from 17-20 to 20-24, recognising the number of players now selected across various formats.</p>

<p>The value of those contracts will increase 7.5 percent in the first year and two percent thereafter to an average Aus$951,000 plus match payments in 2023-24.</p>

<p>According to Australian media, Warne left 31 per cent each of his fortune to his three children Jackson, Brooke and Summer.</p>

<p>Jackson&nbsp;received&nbsp;a little extra in the will as his father gave him a Yamaha motorbike as well as a BMW and Mercedes - estimated to be around $375,000.</p>

<p>The leg-spinner died of a heart attack while on a vacation in Thailand in March last year. According to various reports, Warne was found face down on his bed while the Test match between Pakistan and Australia played on television.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Our board has been monitoring progress since the change of regime,” Mr Allardice said in a&nbsp;statement. “It is a concern that progress is not being made in Afghanistan and it's something our board will consider at its next meeting in March. As far as we are aware, there isn't activity at the moment," he added.</p>
