UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was ‘almost certainly’ behind threats targeting RAF Fairford, marking the strongest attribution of responsibility made by the British government since the incident late last month. Addressing MPs on Monday (October 12), Burnham said the UK would introduce further sanctions against Tehran and the IRGC. However, the incident remains under investigation, with no charges brought against anyone in connection with the episode despite more than two weeks of police inquiries. Speaking in Parliament about the incident at RAF Fairford, Burnham said, “I can confirm our assessment that it is highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards.” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also addressed the House of Commons, confirming that Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband had summoned the Iranian ambassador over the incident. She added that the government had imposed sanctions on two individuals accused of conducting espionage in Europe and the United States. “Miliband will condemn Iran’s continued attempts to undermine our safety. We are also sanctioning two individuals involved in conducting espionage and attacks on behalf of the government of Iran in Europe and the US, and we will not hesitate to take further action to restrict Iran’s capacity to threaten international security,” she said. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on September 27, when five men from London travelled to Whelford, a village adjacent to a base used by the US Air Force, in three white vans. Police released the men on bail the following day after finding no bombs or explosives. A week later, 12 B-1 bombers were withdrawn from the base amid reports that the United States was concerned about a possible drone attack. The facility had previously been used by US forces during the conflict with Iran in the spring and summer. In the days following the incident, the prime minister had said there were ‘strong indications’ that Iran had been involved. These attacks have been claimed by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI). The United States has detained and indicted Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi, whom it accuses of being behind HAYI. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit vote, although his office later ‌stated that Moscow failed to influence the result and the decision to leave the European Union was legitimate.
Burnham, who took over as Britain's leader in July and said last month that Britain could consider rejoining the European Union in the future, is the first British prime minister to say openly there was evidence of Russian interference in the vote.

He said that he had discussed the problem of Russian interference with Chancellor Friedrich Merz during his visit to Germany earlier this week. “There is certainly misinformation, disinformation that is emanating from Russia into German politics. These things are important now to put clearly on the record and I believe help voters in Germany and France understand that some of this politics is instigated via our enemies, namely Russia.” Also Read: ‘Strong indications that Iran played a part in RAF Fairford incident,’ says PM Andy Burnham This comes after in 2020, Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee published a report into Russian interventions in UK elections and referendums. The UK has announced to create an agency to fight against fake information coming from adversaries such as Russia and amplified by artificial intelligence, to help "separate fact from fiction", Britain's defence minister confirmed Wednesday (September 23). Additionally, Prime Minister Andy Burnham also announced plans for the new National Centre for Information Defence. His announcement came while speaking at the UN gathering of world leaders on Tuesday. "A world where the public finds it hard to separate fact from fiction, propaganda from reality, is a dangerous place for a democracy to be," Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said. He added that the new centre will "mobilise trusted voices across civil society." "In recent years we have seen an industrial-scale assault by hostile actors on the information environment in the UK and that of many of our allies," said Burnham. "Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people's fears," he added. The PM also accused Moscow of attempting to interfere with Britain's 2019 general elections. Also read: Xi Jinping heads to Washington for Trump talks: Trade, AI, Taiwan and Iran on the agenda
Russia suspected of meddling
During the divisive 2016 Brexit referendum, Russia was suspected of meddling in UK politics, resulting in the previous Conservative government facing criticism for failing to probe into the allegations. "As more elections approach across Europe, more nations are grappling with these issues," the UK leader added. The sons of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, have criticised the British government over what they describe as an inadequate response to their father’s imprisonment. In a new interview with The Telegraph, the brothers said they were disappointed by the assistance offered when they considered travelling to Pakistan to see their father.

The brothers said former British Foreign Secretary David Lammy advised them against travelling to Pakistan and warned that the UK government would not be able to support them if they were arrested or detained. Lammy served as foreign secretary from July 2024 to September 2025.

The United Kingdom has a new prime minister as Andy Burnham takes charge of the Labour government, beginning a new chapter in British politics. Just days into office, Burnham faces major challenges, including rebuilding public trust, addressing policy concerns, and managing criticism from both opposition parties and Labour lawmakers. His leadership comes after the downfall of Keir Starmer, whose popularity declined following criticism over policies including welfare reforms and the controversial winter fuel payment cuts. During his first public engagements, Burnham highlighted the importance of improving the social care sector, promising to address concerns over cost-cutting and support for vulnerable communities.
