Scott Chandler,&nbsp;American Airlines senior vice president of revenue management and loyalty, cited the rise in fuel costs as a significant factor in the decision to adjust fees.

“Fuel has gone up quite a bit. That’s a big component of our costs when we’re carrying bags. We periodically look at all of our costs and where we can sort of help balance cost out with revenues, said Chandler.

He explained that periodic evaluations of costs are conducted to balance them with revenues.

Under the new program, elite frequent flyers, co-branded credit card holders, and premium cabin customers will still qualify for complimentary checked bags.

Chandler stressed that passengers could enhance their airport experience by pre-registering their bags, emphasising the airline's investment in technology to simplify the process of printing bag tags.

The revised bag fees are effective for any bookings made from Feb 20 onward. Existing reservations ticketed on or before Feb 19 will retain the previous bag fees.

It further said that by using this flight booking method, Skiplagged violates AA.com use agreement and conditions, including its policy that states people who use its website must not act as an agent for anyone outside their family.

Skiplagged makes its customer enter their personal and payment information on its websites and then uses the information to book flights on the American website, the suit alleges. "In doing so, Skiplagged masquerades as an American agent for its customers, which is a breach of the Use Agreement."

A representative of American Airlines told CBS News, "If a customer knowingly or unknowingly purchases a ticket and doesn't fly all of the segments in their itinerary, it can lead to operational issues with checked bags and prevent other customers from booking a seat when they may have an urgent need to travel."

"Intentionally creating an empty seat that could have been used by another customer or team member is an all-around bad outcome,"&nbsp;the statement reads.

American Airlines pilots have overwhelmingly voted in favour of their labour union to strike work, while the company has claimed that negotiations with the union are underway. The results of the vote were announced on Monday (May 1). However, reports suggest that no walk-offs are imminent as pilot strikes are rare and require federal National Mediation Board permission.&nbsp;

Why are the pilots considering a strike?

The union, Allied Pilots Association (APA), said that more than 96 per cent of American pilots participated in the vote, out of which 99 per cent have allowed the union to call a strike. The vote came after the talks for a new deal dragged on, in March.&nbsp;

“Today marks a proud milestone in our pilot group’s unity and resolve and an important step on our path to securing the contract we have earned and deserve — one that prevents management from operating at a discount to our competitors and includes our ‘must have’ quality-of-life priorities,” APA president Captain Ed Sicher wrote to pilots Monday, as quoted by CNBC.&nbsp;

However, Sicher has also said that his members are ready to strike if necessary but reaching a contract agreement is still in the realm of possibility.

The association represents more than 15,000 American Airlines pilots. It has sought not only increases in pay but quality-of-life improvements, like better and predictable schedules after the travel and aviation industry witnessed a rise in demand as Covid-related restrictions were eased.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, reports suggest that pilot contract negotiations across the industry have recently faced difficulty and that American Airlines is not the only one. As pilots for Southwest Airlines might also soon begin voting on a similar strike authorisation later this month.

What did the airline say?

American Airlines told Wall Street Journal that the company believes that it will reach an agreement with the pilots’ union soon and that the vote indicates pilots’ sense of urgency heading into negotiations. “The finish line is in sight,” an American Airline spokeswoman told Wall Street Journal.&nbsp;

“We understand that a strike authorisation vote is one of the important ways pilots express their desire to get a deal done and we respect the message of voting results,” she added. This also comes after American Airlines CEO Robert Isom had said they were ready to raise their pilots’ pay to match their competition Delta Airlines.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, Delta’s pilots approved a four-year deal which included a pay raise of 34 per cent and other improvements. 
 
Citing the recent contract proposal, CNBC reported that if the union accepted a potential four-year deal, American Airlines pilots would receive higher 401(k) contributions while a captain flying narrow-body planes would make $475,000 while the most senior captains of wide-body planes would make $590,000 per year. &nbsp;

According to FlightAware, the plane took off from the airport around 7:45 am bound&nbsp;for Phoenix, Arizona. However, around 8 am, when the plane was hovering over the Upper Arlington area, the pilots accessed something was wrong with the engine&nbsp;and the passenger jet was forced to turn back and head to the airport.&nbsp;

At 8:20 am, the plane landed back on the south runway of the airport. Firefighters and airport security quickly reached the plane and managed to douse the engine fire.&nbsp;

After the landing, the passengers alighted safely and were chauffeured to another flight that departed later in the morning.&nbsp;

According to one of the eyewitness passengers, he and others heard a loud clanking noise, with one of the pilots informing them that the plane had hit a flock of geese shortly after taking off.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration&nbsp;(FAA) has opened an investigation into the matter.

Notably, the incident comes a few days after another American Airlines flight was forced to return to the gate before takeoff&nbsp;due to mechanical difficulties at the&nbsp;Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).&nbsp;

A video made by the passenger showed flames coming out from under the aeroplane's wing as it taxied on the tarmac.&nbsp;

“American Airlines flight 2288, with service from Charlotte (CLT) to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), returned to the gate before takeoff after reporting a mechanical issue. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate under its own power and was taken out of service for maintenance. We never want to disrupt our customer’s travel plans and apologize for the trouble this may have caused,” according to a statement from the airline.

It added, “Upon aircraft arrival, the purser informed that the passenger was heavily intoxicated, and was not adhering to crew instructions on board. He was repeatedly arguing with the operating crew, was not willing to be seated and continuously endangering the safety of crew and aircraft and after disturbing the safety of fellow passengers, finally urinated on pax seated on 15G.”&nbsp;

The airline company has since imposed a ban on the accused from flying on any of its flights in the future, reported ANI, while the fellow passenger who was allegedly urinated on is said to be a US citizen. Prior to landing at the Delhi airport, the American Airlines pilot contacted the ATC informing them about an unruly passenger on board and sought security personnel.

Detention and aftermath

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel took him out of the aircraft and said that the passenger misbehaved with the CISF personnel too, an airport official told ANI. A complaint was also registered with the Delhi Police who said that Vohra was a student in the US and a resident of the Defence Colony&nbsp;in the capital city.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Speaking about the complaint filed by the American Airlines, Devesh Kumar Mahla, DCP, IGI Airport told ANI, “They stated that he did not behave properly and created a nuisance and also urinated on the co-passenger. On the basis of the complaint we are contemplating action under IPC and Civil Aviation Act.” He added that they will take the “strongest action possible” against him to deter other flyers from such behaviour in the future.&nbsp;

“A case has been registered in the matter. We will do our best in this case. The accused Arya Vohra has been released,” the police official told ANI. According to the DCP, the airline has submitted a written complaint while the victim has not come forward, however, action will be taken on the basis of the statement by American Airlines.&nbsp;

“We have got a report from the concerned airline. This comes months after a passenger travelling from New York to New Delhi on an Air India flight allegedly urinated on a female co-passenger who was in her 70s. The man later identified as Shankar Mishra was also said to be inebriated when the incident took place in November&nbsp;last year.

American Airlines bans unruly, inebriated Indian student for urinating on co-passenger: Report

The incident took place on Friday, following which the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has decided to probe the matter.

The Delta pilots halted the plane on the runway just in time to avoid a major tragedy. CNN reported that the plane carrying over 150 people stopped just 1,000 feet (0.3km) away from the incoming American Airlines aircraft.

The air traffic control immediately noticed the potential collusion and immediately ordered the Delta plane to abort take-off.

The FAA in a statement said that Delta Airlines' departing Boeing 737 plane came to a safe stop on the runway as the other crossed in front at around 8.45 pm (local time).

A Delta spokesperson told AP news agency that the plane returned to the gate, where the 145 passengers deboarded and were provided overnight accommodations.

The National Transportation Safety Board also said it was looking into the case.

“Delta will work with and assist aviation authorities on a full review of flight 1943 on Jan. 13 regarding a successful aborted takeoff procedure at New York-JFK. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay of their travels,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement.

Allied Pilots Association, the union representing 15,000 American Airlines pilots, has raised questions on the latest cockpit protocols that the airline imposed without appropriate training.&nbsp;

According to the union, the carrier enforced new systems for cockpit communications during critical situations like low-visibility landings, reported Reuters news agency.&nbsp;

"The operational changes that management is attempting to implement without fulsome training alters how pilots communicate, coordinate, and execute flight safety duties at some of the most high-threat times," APA said on Monday. The APA also mentioned that the carried made the changes over a bulletin.

USA: American Airlines pilots raise concerns over new cockpit protocols

A worker of an airline ground crew died after being sucked into a plane's engine that was stationed at the Montgomery airport in Alabama, US.&nbsp;

According to New York Post, the freak accident occurred on Saturday at 3 pm (local time). The aircraft was parked after completing a journey from Dallas. &nbsp;

At that time, one of its engines was still running and the worker, unaware of it, got ingested into the engine. The deceased, who has not been identified, was working for Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of the American Airlines Group.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the employee was killed on the ramp where American Airlines Flight 3408, an Embraer E175 twin-jet, was parked.&nbsp;

“We are saddened to hear about the tragic loss of a team member of the AA/Piedmont Airlines,” the airport's executive director, Wade Davis, said in a statement. &nbsp;

The pilots&nbsp;have vehemently rejected Boeing’s argument that it is safer to have one common system for all versions of the 737.

"Boeing needs to proceed with installing modern crew alerting systems on these aircraft to mitigate pilot startle-effect and confusion during complex, compound system malfunctions,” Capt. Edward Sicher, president of the Allied Pilots Association that represents 15,000 pilots of American Airlines, told Reuters news agency on Wednesday.

In December 2020, the US Congress passed the Aircraft Certification, Safety and Accountability Act, which tightened the conditions required to obtain&nbsp;certificates for new aircraft. It will take effect on January 1, 2023.

The legislation comes in response to two fatal 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people and led to the best-selling plane's 20-month grounding.

But on Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration in a letter told the Senate that Boeing won’t be able to certify the MAX 10 and Max 7 before next summer, calling for an extension to the deadline.

“With regard to the 737-10, Boeing’s current project plan timeline has the 737-10 receiving an amended type certificate no sooner than summer 2023,” FAA Administrator Billy Nolen wrote in response to a question from Republican Senator from Mississippi Roger Wicker, according to a Reuters report.

Only MAX 8 and MAX 9 models have been certified with the new cockpit system.

The family members of those killed in the MAX plane crashes have also opposed giving Boeing an extension.

Following the incident, the suspect was then led off the plane by Los Angeles Airport Police once the plane landed.

Not only this, he has since been permanently banned from flying with the carrier and could see him charged with a federal crime.

The airline's spokesperson Derek Walls said ''Acts of violence against our team members are not tolerated by American Airlines.''

Highlighting that the incident fit a pattern of similar attacks on airline staffers, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) called it &nbsp;''dangerous' and 'life-threatening.''&nbsp;

American Airlines plans to roll out privacy doors and lie-flat seats with a chaise lounge option in the new premium suites on its long-haul fleet. The Flagship Suite seats will be available on all Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 787-9 deliveries beginning in 2024, American Airlines has announced.

"We believe our Flagship Suite product provides customers with what they desire most on a long-haul flight: privacy doors, lie-flat seating, direct aisle access and more personal space," the airline said in a statement.

For those travelling economy, more premium seating will be available. The amount of in-seat storage space will double, the airline said. It also features headrest wings for increased privacy and larger in-seat entertainment screens.

The airline also plans to refresh its Boeing 777-300ER interiors and retrofit those aircraft with Flagship Suite seats starting late 2024.

Flagship Business on existing Boeing 787-8, Boeing 787-9 and Boeing 777-200 aircraft will continue to be offered. Its Flagship First product, currently only offered on Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A321T aircraft, will become Flagship Suite seats when the aircraft are retrofitted, starting in late 2024 for the Boeing 777-300ER and at a future date for the Airbus A321T, American said.

The company boss said that with additional weather issues, staffing "begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences."&nbsp;

He said he hoped that operations will be restored "quickly with the start of a new month."

He also announced the return of 1,800 flight staff who have been on standby since the pandemic and the hiring of another 600 by the end of December, as well as 4,000 airport employees.&nbsp;
