Two major airlines, American and Southwest, have postponed plans to resume serving alcohol on flights in an effort to stop a surge of unruly and sometimes violent behaviour by passengers who have shoved, struck and yelled at flight attendants.

Both airlines announced the policies this past week after the latest assault was captured on a widely watched video that showed a woman punching a flight attendant in the face on a Southwest Airlines flight from Sacramento, California, to San Diego on Sunday.

The flight attendant lost two teeth in the assault, according to her union, and the passenger, who was identified by the police as Vyvianna Quinonez, 28, has been charged with battery causing serious bodily injury. She has also been barred for life from flying Southwest, the airline said.

Since Janusary 1, the Federal Aviation Administration has received about 2,500 reports of unruly behaviour by passengers, including about 1,900 reports of passengers refusing to comply with a federal mandate that they wear masks on planes.

The agency said that in the past it did not track reports of unruly passengers because the numbers had been fairly consistent over the years, but that it began receiving reports of a “significant increase” in disruptive behaviour starting in late 2020.

“We have just never seen anything like this,” Sara Nelson, the international president of the Association of Flight Attendants, said during an online meeting with federal aviation officials Wednesday. “We’ve never seen it so bad.”

Southwest Airlines issued a statement Friday citing the “recent uptick industrywide of incidents in flight involving disruptive passengers” as it announced that it had paused plans to resume serving alcohol on flights.

It said that alcohol sales, which had been suspended in the main cabin since late March 2020, would remain suspended through September 13, when a federal mandate requiring passengers to wear masks on aeroplanes, buses and trains is set to expire.

In a memo, American said it recognized that “alcohol can contribute to atypical behavior from customers onboard and we owe it to our crew not to potentially exacerbate what can already be a new and stressful situation for our customers.”

“Over the past week we’ve seen some of these stressors create deeply disturbing situations on board aircraft,” said the memo, which was issued to American’s flight attendants Saturday. “Let me be clear: American Airlines will not tolerate assault or mistreatment of our crews.”

American said that alcohol would continue to be served in first class and business class, but only during the flight and not before departure.

The changes came after Lyn Montgomery, president of Transport Workers Union Local 556, which represents flight attendants on Southwest Airlines, urged the airline’s CEO, Gary Kelly, to stop the “abuse” employees have been facing.

“We ask that you take a strong stance to ensure that unruly passengers are not welcome to travel with us, period, full stop,” she wrote in a letter to Kelly on Monday. “Flight crews must feel safe and supported when reporting to work.”

The changes also came after the FAA said Monday that it had proposed fines of $9,000 to $15,000 for five passengers who had exhibited disruptive behaviour on flights.

One of those passengers was in the main cabin of a JetBlue flight in February. She yelled obscenities and pushed a flight attendant who took away Champagne and food that had been brought to her by a passenger in first class, the FAA said.

Another passenger on a JetBlue flight in January ignored instructions to stop drinking alcohol and yelled at crew members after they told him to stop talking on his cellphone, the agency said.

In January, a passenger on Alaska Airlines shoved a flight attendant who was walking down the aisle and documenting which passengers were wearing masks, the FAA said.

FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said in a videotaped statement that the agency has a “zero-tolerance policy” for passengers who cause disturbances on flights or fail to obey instructions from the flight crew.

Passengers, regardless of their vaccination status, must wear masks on planes and in airports, he said.

“But this isn’t just about face masks,” Dickson said. “We’ve seen incidents related to alcohol, violence toward flight attendants and abusive behavior in general.”

Those who violate the rules, he said, may be subject to fines and jail time. As a former commercial airline captain, Dickson said, he knows that disruptive passengers can pose a safety risk.

“Flying is the safest mode of transportation,” he said, “and we intend to keep it that way.”

An airline spokesperson confirmed the incident which happened at the New York's LaGuardia Airport when Strata boarded a flight to Dallas.&nbsp;

However, he added that the version described initially by Strata is not correct and by Thursday evening, the conservative activist was suspended to fly with American Airlines.&nbsp;

Mr. Straka will be permitted to fly with us once face coverings are no longer required for customers," American Airlines said in an e-mail reply, reported The Washington Post.&nbsp;

"These 115 flights represent approximately 1.5 per cent of American's total flying each day this summer," American Airlines chairman and CEO Doug Parker said in a statement.

But he stressed his confidence in the aircraft overall.

"Based upon our ongoing work with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing, we are highly confident that the MAX will be recertified prior to this time (August 19)," he said.

"By extending our cancellations through the summer, we can plan more reliably for the peak travel season and provide confidence to our customers and team members when it comes to their travel plans.&nbsp;

"Once the MAX is recertified, we anticipate bringing our MAX aircraft back online as spares to supplement our operation as needed during the summer."

American Airlines&nbsp;has suspended an employee after a video showed an altercation on one of its planes involving crew, several passengers and a crying woman carrying a young child.

An American Airlines employee violently took a stroller from the woman, hitting her with it and just missing her child, Facebook user Surain Adyanthaya said in a post accompanying the video he put on the site on Friday.

Less than two weeks ago, a 69-year-old doctor, David Dao, was hospitalised after Chicago aviation police dragged him from a United Airlines plane sparking international outrage and a public relations nightmare for the carrier.

American Airlines was investigating Friday&#39;s incident, which happened on Flight 591 from San Francisco to Dallas before the plane took off, Leslie Scott, an airline spokeswoman said.

The incident started over a dispute as to whether the woman could bring her stroller on the flight, Scott said.

Adyanthaya did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In his video, the woman with the child can be heard asking flight attendants for the stroller. A male passenger then walks toward the front of the plane and demands from the airline crew the name of the employee who took the stroller before he returns to his seat.

Moments later, another American employee, who Scott said was a flight attendant, enters the plane and the male passenger confronts him.

&quot;You do that to me and I&#39;ll knock you flat,&quot; the passenger can be heard saying to the flight attendant.

The two then confront each other in the aisle of the plane and the employee can be heard challenging the passenger to hit him. The passenger eventually returns to his seat and the flight attendant leaves the plane.

&quot;We are deeply sorry for the pain we have caused this passenger and her family and to any other customers affected by the incident,&quot; the airline said in a statement late on Friday.

The woman and her family were being upgraded to first class for the remainder of their international trip, it said.

In a case of alleged discrimination in the US, a 40-year-old Muslim man was removed from a plane after a flight attendant publicly announced his name, seat number and said she would be &quot;watching&quot; him. 
 
The matter came to light yesterday when the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) complained to transport authorities that Mohamed Ahmed Radwan was removed from the American Airlines Flight last December because of his &quot;identifiably Arabic and Muslim name&quot;. 
 
According to federal law, airlines are prohibited from discriminating against passengers based on religion, ancestry and national origin, among other criteria. 
 
CAIR sent a letter to the Department of Transportation (DOT) yesterday urging an investigation and also called for a &quot;thorough examination&quot; into prevailing practices of major airlines, The Charlotte Observer reported.&nbsp;In addition, CAIR said the DOT should develop policy guidelines on objective factors to be looked at while deciding to remove a passenger from a plane. 
 
Radwan, a chemical engineer, said he was flying from Charlotte to Detroit on December 6, 2015, on American Airlines Flight 1821. 
 
As he was taking his allotted seat, Radwan said, a female flight attendant loudly announced, &quot;Mohamed Ahmed, Seat 25-A, I will be watching you&quot;. 
 
After a minute, she repeated, &quot;Mohamed Ahmed, that is a very long name, Seat 25-A, I will be watching you&quot;. Then a third time, according to Radwan, she said, &quot;25-A: you will be watched&quot;.
