'Brahmastra' spinoff movie to revolve around Shah Rukh Khan's Scientist? Here's what Ayan Mukerji has to say

When I first saw the trailer for Ayan Mukerji's 'Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva', I remember wondering why it chose to focus on visuals of characters hurling magical light at each other and there was hardly any information about the plot and dialogue. Now I know the answer. ''Brahmastra' has a few halfway-decent ideas, good world-building, and eye-poppingly good visuals. But it is not the saviour the Hindi film industry needed. Clocking at around 167 minutes -- while somehow feeling even longer -- Brahmastra' is a slog throughout. Borrowing from Hindu myths was an interesting decision in my view, if a little hazardous in a country where many seem to be yearning to take offence from something and boycotting every movie with a big star. But 'Brahmastra' squanders the potential.

The world-building in 'Brahmāstra' is derivative

Hinduism has had a long history and there are thousands of tales and legends about gods, demons, supernatural creatures, and so on -- pretty much everything needed to build a cinematic universe that Mukerji intended. And indeed, the world-building in 'Brahmāstra' is not exactly bad, but it does not feel fresh. It has borrowed from several movie franchises from the west like 'Harry Potter', 'The Lord of the Rings' and, of course, the Marvel Cinematic Universe'. The film has lifted the Chosen One trope from western pop culture as well. Sometimes, the 'inspiration' goes too far. For instance, the powers of Mouni Roy's villainous Junoon, the Queen of Darkness, carry a strong resemblance with Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch in MCU to a suspicious degree. When is a piece of creativity a homage and when does it become derivative? 'Brahmāstra' does tend to blur the lines.

Despite being too "inspired", the mythology built in 'Brahmastra' has potential

However, I did not mind the derivative part much and had actually expected that. The mythology of the intended AstraVerse, as the cinematic universe is named, does throw up a few fascinating ideas. It revolves around a bunch of MacGuffins. In this world, the LotR-style prologue tells us, sages and warriors called forth the powers of heavens eons ago and were gifted with weapons of untold power, each representing an element -- like fire, wind, light, and water -- or some diety like the Nandi Astra that harnesses the powers of Nandi.

There was a weapon more powerful than any other: the 'Brahmastra' (One Ring to rule them all, haha), with the power to obliterate all life in the universe. One person wanted it all to himself but was stopped by another. In the process, Brahmāstra was broken into three pieces, each of which was entrusted to members of a secret society called Brahmansh. The weapon will stay dormant until the pieces are joined. And the destruction of the cosmos will follow. Which is not what the protagonists want.

Cut to the present. Ranbir Kapoor's Shiva is a man with a mysterious connection to fire. A DJ by profession, he spots Alia Bhatt's Isha among the audience and falls in love with her. Shiva is accustomed to strange visions and one evening sees a scientist being ambushed by two assassins clad like ninjas and none other than Roy's Junoon -- as it is happening. The scientist, we are told, was one of the Brahmansha and had a piece of the Brahmastra. Shiva and Isha then go on a journey to save Nagarjuna's Anish Shetty, who is awaiting a similar fate in Varanasi. Later, they find Amitabh heading what remains of the Brahmansha in the high Himalayas, with Big B's character serving as Gandalf to Ranbir's Frodo (the parallels are eerie, I tell you).

Visuals are the highlight

'Brahmastra' knows what kind of movie this is and where most of the money, I presume, has been spent. The visual effects are truly awe-inspiring at times. And it is not just the magical beams and fireballs and everything else computer generated. It is also the more quotidian stuff. For instance, a scene in which hundreds of devotees dance during Durga Pooja to the tunes of Shiva looks absolutely spectacular with a camera. The cinematography, by multiple people according to Wikipedia, provides gorgeous imagery. It is so good that even the high-quality CGI-driven visuals look gaudy and distracting after a while.

'Brahmastra' is sometimes excessive -- throwing everything at the audience that it deems would be enjoyed

Despite the consistently splendid imagery, 'Brahmastra' can be excessive. Mukerji, who earlier directed Ranbir in 'Wake Up Sid' and 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', is not a fan of subtlety, I gather. Every single scene has to be overwrought and filled with import. Perhaps that was the studio demand? I don't know. In one scene, Shiva is just walking in the streets and Pritam is playing drums in the background.

The dialogues are atrocious

As I said above, the writing is fine as far as the world-building goes, but it's the dialogues that truly sink the movie. You know, you have to expect poor writing when you are going to watch a big-budget Hindi movie. It is a given at this point. But even by that standards, 'Brahmastra' is terrible.

There is one piece of conversation that I am not likely to forget anytime soon. Shiva jokes to Isha that she got burnt in her love, pointing to a burn she got on a shoulder during an engagement with the assassins. To this, she responds something along the lines of 'long back'. 'Pyar ki aag' is a phrase I thought I would never hear outside of 90s' Hindi cinema. It felt to me at times that Ranbir and other actors are doing a bit -- they must be -- or the movie is simply an overlong SNL sketch. Or perhaps the words coming out of their mouths are meant to be ironic or campy? No, none of that. Everything is uttered with a straight face. Whatever the jokes the movies have don't land. The actors act like the budget could afford two or three facial expressions.

Oh, and everything has to be spelled out. Every. Single. Thing. Repeatedly, just in case the audience did not get what the titular weapon does in the last dozen times. The script is chock-full of exposition and did not have the decency to make the conversation remotely interesting.

I don't ask this question lightly: did they hire a turnip to write the dialogues?

'Brahmastra' offers some awe-inspiring CGI action but is butchered by a dreadful script

'Brahmastra' box office collection: Ranbir-Alia's film has a 'fabulous weekend', earns $27 million worldwide

Filmmaker Ayan Mukerji's film 'Brahmastra' finally releases in theatres. The film has created a lot of buzz in the past few weeks, courted controversy and has been touted as the most expensive film ever made in Bollywood. The film has Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt pairing up onscreen for the first time. It also has some very prominent faces making cameo appearances. Is 'Brahamastra' worth your time? Does it live up to the hype? Watch Critically Speaking to find out.

Critically Speaking: Is 'Brahmastra' worth the hype?

5 years in making, a pandemic thrown in the middle, a romance on sets and eventually a wedding later, filmmaker Ayan Mukerji's labour of love 'Brahmastra- Part One: Shiva' releases today in theatres worldwide. A film that has been touted as the most expensive movie made in Bollywood ever- thanks to its extravagant VFX- is also one of the most talked about films of the season. It is also a crucial film for Bollywood at a time when the Hindi film industry is struggling to create an impact at the box office. Delays and controversies notwithstanding, Ranbir Kapoor- Alia Bhatt's 'Brahmastra' manages to infuse a very Indian concept with western sensibilities of filmmaking. The result is a convoluted plot with stunning modern technology to back it up.

What is the story of 'Brahmastra'?

Considering it is the first part of a trilogy, the film begins by establishing the premise well. It takes the viewers back in time and establishes how in ancient times, sages meditated at the Himalayas to attain superpowers based on four elements - fire, wind, water, and earth as well as elements from plants and animals to create unique weapons or astras. These sages form the 'Brahmansh' - a sort of universe where they use these newly acquired weapons to protect the world. One of the strongest of the astra that is created originates from light, which has so much power in it that it can destroy the universe. What now exists of Brahmastra are in three parts- each being protected by a key leader of 'Brahmansh' - a secret group of people who wield superpowers when needed to fight evil.

Shiva, a DJ in Mumbai, has lived a good life mostly despite the odds against him. An orphan who has lived a life on his own terms, he meets Isha(Alia Bhatt) during a Dushera Carnival and instantly falls in love. But his love life is hindered by flashes/nightmares he gets which make him revisit a horrific past involving his mother's death, of important people getting hunted by one Junoon (Mouni Roy) and her men in search of a broken piece of rock- part of the Brahmastra. The ones who are being hunted- are important people of the society- one is a scientist- who gets killed in order to protect his important artifact/stone. Shiva foresees the same fate for a Benaras-based archeologist (Nagarjuna) and decides to go to Varanasi along with Isha in order to warn him before Junoon and her men reach him.

The inspiration from the west

Written by Ayan Mukerji and dialogues by Hussain Dalal, the film takes inspiration from the Harry Potter series and Marvel Cinematic Universe to create a story that is very Indian at heart. The result is middling as the story remains extremely convoluted and lacks coherence on several occasions. The first half, when films usually establish the plot, is not very convincing. The pace only picks up in the second half when Amitabh Bachchan's character - as a leader of Brahmansh is introduced, who joins the pieces of the puzzle for Shiva as well as the audience making the story more coherent and believable.

It is quite apparent that the writers borrow heavily from the west. Be it the screenplay that is inspired from Harry Potter and several Marvel films to even the dialogues, which perhaps were primarily thought in English and then translated into Hindi. Like 'Brahmastra ki roshni tum dono ke saath rahe' is literally 'May the force be with you' or 'Roshni ki taqat mein vishwas rakhta hoon' is 'I believe in the power of light'. The characters are not well etched out and Mukerji's character sketches remain half-baked. Ranbir Kapoor's character asks a lot of questions but never answers any himself. The process of falling in love with Isha seems rather out of the blue. Considering Shiva is propelled by love, the script hardly concentrates on his love story with Isha. Sure, Isha is around always as a supportive girlfriend but it is never established what made the two fall in love in the first instance.

The special effects and music

While there are several flaws in the film's writing, the VFX more than makes up for it. It is a visual extravaganza that Indian cinema has not seen. SS Rajamouli's 'Baahubali' too was heavily backed by VFX but 'Brahmastra' perhaps takes it a step ahead. The second half especially is stunning.

The film's music by Pritam too is praiseworthy. Each song- from 'Dance Ka Bhoot' to 'Deva Deva' to ever popular 'Kesariya' are beautifully composed and stays with you much after the film. The sons have also been shot really well by cinematographers Sudeep Chatterjee, Patrick Duroux, Pankaj Kumar, Manikandan, and Vikash Nowlakha.

The performances

The film is not performance-driven even though it has some prominent faces playing key roles. Amitabh Bachchan plays his usual patriarch in the film, and Mukerji underuses the crackling chemistry that his lead- real-life couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt share. As a matter of fact, the two actors are very underused. These roles could have been done by anyone, it did not need a Ranbir or an Alia to drive it forward. Mouni Roy, as the evil Junoon is the only actress who impressed me- but the dialogues deeply fail her too. Watch out for the interesting cameos that are spread over 166 minutes of the film.

The makers demand a suspension of disbelief while watching the film and thanks to its VFX, one wants to indulge in Mukerji's vision. 'Brahmastra' got delayed multiple times because the director wanted the special effects to look a certain way and the hard work shows on screen. Sure, the story is illogical on many occasions and this is not Mukerji's best writing. But haven't we been indulging Marvel for years as it has released numerous films years after years? There is a fatigue that many MCU fans are facing in present times with repetitive stories and innumerable stand-alone films, and perhaps that's why the introduction of Ayan Mukerji's Atra-verse in 'Brahmastra' can satiate the craving of ardent superhero fans.
Everything you should know about Ranbir Kapoor's 'Brahmastra' - From Astraverse to SRK cameo Shiva, a DJ in Mumbai, has lived a good life mostly despite the odds against him. The inspiration from the west Written by Ayan Mukerji and dialogues by Hussain Dalal, the film takes inspiration from the Harry Potter series and Marvel Cinematic Universe to create a story that is very Indian at heart. 'Brahmastra' movie review: Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt's film works for its special effects, not for its story

'Brahmastra', written and directed by Ayan Mukerji, not only aims to be the next 'Baahubali', an epic, globe-spanning success from India, but also has ambitions to give an answer to Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU in the form of 'Astraverse'. Incidentally, Disney, the owner of Marvel Studios, is co-producing 'Brahmastra' through its subsidiary Star Studios. Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, the film has been in development in one form or another since 2014. Its filming lasted an incredible five years from 2018 to 2022. Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna Akkineni also star.

The film is based on stories from Hindu mythology. Its title derives from the divine weapon of Brahma, the god of creation. The trailers and promos of 'Brahmastra' have impressed the fans. The visuals look quite impressive. Indian movies, even the most expensive ones, have almost always disappointed moviegoers with subpar CGI and special effects. Judging by the trailer at least, 'Brahmastra' looks good.

In terms of box office, 'Brahmastra' has to break the jinx of the recent big-budget Bollywood releases like 'Laal Singh Chaddha' and 'Raksha Bandhan', all of which have flopped at the box office. Like other Hindi films, 'Brahmastra' is also beset with boycott hashtags that are trending on social media sites. We do not, however, know if they actually affect the box office performance of films.

'Brahmastra' will have to break even on a budget of Rs 410 crore. As per trade analyst Taran Adarsh who spoke to Indianexpress.com, the film is significant as the last few weeks have been terrible for Bollywood.

"We have had disaster after disaster. The sad part was that the films were not picking up at all. Shows were being cancelled, and this was happening for big star cast films. Somewhere down the line, the content was to be blamed and trailers could not send out the right signals. So, all in all, it has been a very depressing phase. But the advance booking of Brahmastra has brought in some cheer and a ray of hope. Hopefully, things will improve starting with this film," he said.

He added that the film should open with a collectin of over Rs 25 crore.

'Brahmastra' box office Day 1 prediction: Will Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt fantasy film break the Bollywood jinx?

With just two days left for Bollywood's big-budget film 'Brahmastra' to hit the big screens, the film's lead pair Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt along with the filmmaker Ayan Mukerji addressed the media in New Delhi on Wednesday and spoke about how they have lived through the film for the last 5 years.

'Brahmastra' has been facing protests on social media as trolls have demanded a boycott of the film over past interviews of Alia and Ranbir which they have claimed hurt their religious sentiments.

While the 'B' word was avoided at the press meet, the stars of the film were asked to address the current cancel culture which has in fact affected box office numbers of the recent Bollywood releases including Ranbir's 'Shamshera'.

"I'll speak for my own film. A month and a half back my film 'Shamshera' was released in theatres. I didn't feel any negativity around it. The film did not work at the box office because maybe the audience didn't like it. Eventually, it is about the content. People go to the cinemas to experience different emotions, have a great laugh and cry- we all go to the theatres for that. If a film doesn't work, it is because the content did not work, not for any other reason. That's the truth. "

Ranbir's wife, Alia Bhatt too refused to acknowledge the recent boycott trend that exists in India and said the climate of the country is perfect to release a film like 'Brahmastra'.

"It is a beautiful environment to release a film like 'Brahmastra'. We should all be grateful, that we are healthy. The climate is not negative. We should be grateful that films are back in theatres."

At the event, the press was shown 20 minutes of the film's footage which gave a glimpse of the scale of the film. Mounted on a huge scale with VFX done by a company based outside India, 'Brahmastra' attempts to blend Hindu mythology and modern technology together to tell a original story, said the film's creator Ayan Mukherji. The film has been in the making for 5 years and Mukerji started writing it 10 years back.

A labour of love for the team, Mukerji revealed that the film's final post production work ended just a few days back and that he was anxious of how the audience would take in the film.

The trio, on Tuesday had faced protest as they made their way to Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh- a state in central India. The three were supposed to visit the temple together but due to protests from local groups, Alia and Ranbir had reportedly decided to skip their visit. Clearing the air, Mukerji stated that it was he who had discouraged the two to visit owing to Alia's health. The actress is expecting her first child with Ranbir Kapoor.

"Both of them were very keen about coming with me to the temple. But when we reached Ujjain and we heard about the protests, I didn't want to take Alia along due to her current condition. I felt very bad later than they could have easily come along with me, so that's on me,"

When the trio was asked what would they say to those who had called for a boycott of the film, Ayan replied, "In 'Brahmastra' we have this line, 'The light is coming.' By light we mean everything positive and spiritual in life. We must only spread light and positivity in life. We have worked so hard for this film, it has so much of celebration of Indian culture, that I feel every Indian will see it and feel that positivity."

On Friday, a mega promotional event for 'Brahmastra' was planned in Hyderabad. The event was to have Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Ayan Mukerji along with Jr NTR in attendance but was canceled hours before its scheduled time.
On Friday, a mega promotional event for 'Brahmastra' was planned in Hyderabad. The event was to have Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Ayan Mukerji along with Jr NTR in attendance but was canceled hours before its scheduled time. Organizers told Hindustan Times that the event was canceled due to 'unforeseen circumstances.' The event reportedly did not get a police clearance on time as the Police were deployed in the city ahead of Ganpati Visarjan and could not dedicate enough personnel for the mega event. A political rally to has been planned for the next day and sources told the publication that as a result the police force is stretched. The event was scheduled to take place at Hyderabad's famous Ramoji Film City with the film's lead pair, director and Jr NTR in attendance. 'Brahmastra' is set to release on September 9 and will release in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Several fans took to Twitter to express disappointment over the cancellation of the event. 💔 Go back safely @tarak9999 fans! 'Brahmastra' event featuring Ranbir, Alia and Jr NTR called off in Hyderabad, upset fans demand apology

Looks like the trend of boycotting films is not completely over. After netizens demanded a boycott on recent releases like 'Laal Singh Chaddha', 'Raksha Bandhan', 'Dobaaraa' and recently Vijay Deverakonda`s 'Liger', certain section on Twitter wants Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor's upcoming release 'Brahmastra: Part 1- Shiva' to be boycotted.

#BoycottBrahmastra has been trending on social media with trolls figging out old clips of the actors which they claim have hurt religious sentiments. The film also features Amitabh Bacchan in a pivotal role and is scheduled to release in theatres on September 9.

Trollers are currently trending #BoycottBrahmastra on Twitter, asking the people not to watch the film.

Apparently, some netizens have dug out clips related to Ranbir, Alia and Amitabh Bachchan`s previous portrayals in different films which have affected their religious sentiments.

Ranbir Kapoor

Trolls have pointed out several instances of the actor that they deemed as offensive. Kapoor had made a guest appearance in Aamir Khan's 'PK' as an alien, in which Aamir placed stickers of Hindu Gods on Ranbir's cheeks for self-defence.

Another clip had the actor in his debut film 'Saawariya' reportedly mocking a Hindu mantra, along with a decade-old clip from an interview where Ranbir stated that he loves to eat beef.

Alia Bhatt

An old ad of Alia in an advertisement has been highlighted by trolls and termed offensive. The clothing brand ad had Alia calling the ritual of 'Kanyaadaan' an oppressive practice. Kanyaadaan is an integral part of most Hindu weddings where the bride's father gives away his daughter to the groom. The practice has been called out by many as archaic in the past few years.

Apart from that, Alia, in an interview, said that "if you don't like me, dont watch me", which has triggered anger amongst many on social media. The clip has gone viral on social media, with many Twitter users saying that they will boycott her upcoming film `Brahmastra`.

Amitabh Bachchan

Even Bollywood superstar, the legendary Amitabh Bachchan has not been spared by the trolls. The actor's iconic monologue "Aaj Khush to Bohot Hoge Tum" from yesteryear hit film `Deewar`, where he was seen talking to Lord Shiva`s idol is currently getting trolled by the netizens for disrespecting the Hindu god.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, who flew to Italy last week for their babymoon, returned to Mumbai late at night on Sunday. The two were spotted at the Mumbai airport as they made their way out of the arrival gates. As always, paps were waiting outside the airport to capture glimpses of the parents-to-be.

The couple opted for comfy attires for their airport looks. While Alia donned an all-black ensemble with a white hooded jacket and matching sneakers. Ranbir, on the other hand, wore a blue shirt, matching pants and a cap. He paired his OOTD with white sneakers.

They waved at the fans and greeted them while leaving the airport. Ranbir seemed very protective of his ladylove as he walked behind her and kept a close eye on everyone coming near the actress. Take a look at a viral video of the couple below:

In WION's new weekly series 'Critically Speaking' we focus on the week's big release and tell you what is good and what's not good about the film. This week we discuss Alia Bhatt's maiden production 'Darlings'. Directed by Jasmeet K Reen, the film features Shefali Shah and Alia Bhatt as a mother-daughter duo living in Mumbai with multiple complexities in their lives. How they find solace and hope in each other and solve problems in their lives forms the rest of the story. So is 'Darlings' worth your time? Watch the video to find out more.

Critically Speaking: Should you be watching Alia Bhatt's 'Darlings'

Women tell stories of women the best. In debutant director Jasmeet K Reen's 'Darlings', a twisted mother-daughter duo not only is the biggest cheerleaders for each other but also each other's critics. They are both stuck in a complex relationship involving men, yet never are projected as vulnerable. Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah play spirited women- who despite bad marriages are never willing to give up on life.

Set in bustling Mumbai, the story of Shamzi(Shah) and Badru (Bhatt) could be any of our stories. It is the story of a protective single mother, always wanting to look out for her daughter, it is about a woman desperately trying to make her marriage work, it is about a man who is not too fond of his mother-in-law, a man who is deeply frustrated at work and who takes it out on his wife every night. Such stories exist in every bylane of India, every nook and corner, in high-rises and shanties, irrespective of class. So what makes 'Darlings' hatke? First, the courage to tell the story with such nonchalance and then to spin it around with a dash of humour.

What is the story of 'Darlings'

Alia Bhatt and Vijay Verma play a young couple Badru and Hamza. They have had a love marriage but after three years, the marriage has turned sour to a great extent. She is naive and wants a future with him while he is a raging alcoholic who can't keep his anger in check and hits his wife every other night. Living across them is Badru's mother Shamzi who has single-handedly raised Badru and cannot see her daughter suffer daily.
The writing of 'Darlings' stands out

The humour in 'Darlings' is not in your face. Instead, it’s in the little moments. It is subtle and makes you smirk at the clever writing but never laugh out loud. Written by Parveen Sheikh and co-written by Reen, the film's detailing, the dialect of the actors, and the character portrayals are so well done that it keeps you hooked throughout its 1 hour 45 minutes run time. The scenes are so engaging and well written. especially, the scene at the police station where the Inspector (Vijay Maurya) and Shamsi and Badru engage a hilarious conversation fuelled by misinterpretations. It’s the kind of scene that you expect to see in Anurag Kashyap's film where characters are middle in trivial banters for a long time till they find the core point.

The performances of the cast

Scenes of Bhatt and Shah, in fact, are all very special. Both gifted actors- complement each other- never overstepping each other’s acting space and emoting majorly through expressions and eyes. It is truly a delight to watch the two gifted actresses attempt a genre like this. The men, Vijay Verma and Roshan Mathew too are equally good in their parts. Verma who shined in his limited screen time in films like 'Gully Boy' and 'Pink' gets a complex role to play in 'Darlings'. His Hamza is no ordinary man, a twisted, dark man who vents out his frustration at the workplace through violence at home, he should ideally be the most hated character in the film. Yet, Verma brings in his charm to the character and plays evil with so much style that you end up enjoying his antics- even though you know he is wrong. Mathew on the other hand plays a strikingly opposite character to Hamza. A polite, nice, aspiring writer Zulfi yearns for Badru but is unable to say it out loud. Instead, he willingly gives the mother-daughter company as they plot a devilish plan against Hamza.

Not just casting, but the film's music perfectly blends in with the story.’ Dil La Ilaaj’ and the title song especially stand out

While ‘Darlings’ tells an important story, it also loses its humour slightly in the second half. I would have hoped that the film was darker and more twisted, but instead, it focuses more on getting closure for its lead protagonist.

Co-produced by Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan, the film effectively highlights the abuse that so many women face in their marriages but also raises questions on what is the right way of dealing with a toxic relationship. Should one be vengeful? Or is walking out without giving it back a better call? ‘Darlings’ explore both sides well.

‘Darlings’ is also perhaps another step towards stories made for women who are past Bollywood’s conventional role of playing the leading lady. In Shamza, Shefali Shah once again gets a story to deliver – this is the second similar film after the very emotional ‘Jalsa’. Shah emotes through her eyes and sinks her teeth in a character, which appears to be tailor-made for her. The actress is truly outstanding.

Should you watch 'Darlings’? Yes, because of its cast, its music and the relevant message it tries to give out. ‘Darlings’ is streaming on Netflix from August 5.

Women tell stories of women the best. In debutant director Jasmeet K Reen's 'Darlings', a twisted mother-daughter duo not only is the biggest cheerleaders for each other but also each other's critics.

What is the story of 'Darlings' Alia Bhatt and Vijay Verma play a young couple Badru and Hamza. She advises Badru to leave him every day but the daughter is hopeful to change her circumstance. Situations worsen when Zulfi (Roshan Mathew) - the lovelorn, friendly neighbour goes and files a police complaint against Hamza accusing him of domestic violence. Does the complaint finally put an end to Hamza's beating? Do the couple kiss and make up or do Shamzi and Badru finally let the police put him behind bars forms the rest of the story. 'Darlings' review: Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah's film is best enjoyed for its little moments

If multiple media reports are to be believed, actor Ishaan Khatter has been signed in to play the male lead in Farhan Akhtar's new road trip film 'Jee Le Zara'. The film stars Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra in the lead. The film was announced exactly a year back when Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut 'Dil Chahta Hai' completed 20 years.

Reports state that the film, which will see Farhan Akhtar donning the director's hat after a very long time, has been delayed and will now go on the floor in early 2023. Ishaan was reportedly roped in several months back but the makers have been waiting for the right time to make the announcement, cites a source to Times Of India.

A year since the film was announced, a lot has changed. Alia and Katrina got married. Priyanka had her daughter through surrogacy and Alia is now pregnant with her first child with husband Ranbir Kapoor. Rumours were rife that the film had been shelved due to lack of dates from the leading ladies.

Of course, we can not go on the floor this year (Indicating to her pregnancy). We ain't letting that film go. We are fighting for it and we are all too excited about it. It's going to be quite massive and we can't wait,” Alia told a news outlet while promoting her new film 'Darlings'.
'Gangubai Kathiawadi' to 'Jersey': WION's list of best Hindi films of 2022 so far

Ranbir Kapoor, undoubtedly, is one of the finest and most gifted actors the present generation has witnessed in India. Despite the ongoing nepotism debate, which has also targeted Kapoor, he has proven his worth in films such as 'Rockstar,' 'Barfi,' 'Tamasha,' 'Wake Up Sid,' and 'Sanju,' his most recent release in 2018. The film was declared a superhit, and Ranbir garnered huge applause for his flawless acting.

The 39-year-old is making a comeback after four years of hiatus with two back-to-back releases - Ayan Mukerji's 'Brahmastra' and Karan Malhotra's 'Shamshera'. The trailers of these films were dropped creating a greater furore amongst moviegoers. The larger-than-life canvas, VFX, original storyline, impressive star cast, and all-in-one approach of both films promise to deliver a spectacular viewing experience.

However, being optimistic about these films' ability to render epic and magnificent theatrical feats, there are a few jarring elements that may either make or break Ranbir's future in showbiz.

Delayed release of ‘Shamshera’ and ‘Brahmastra’

SS Rajamouli's 'Baahubali' franchise has already introduced the Indian audience to a new style of a magnum opus, followed by KGF Chapters, and 'RRR'. They are now accustomed to the entertainment factor of a multi-starrer, high-budget film. Hence, movies of such scale need to match the standards set by the previously mentioned films, as they have raised the bar of storytelling and production value.

Ranbir, seems late to the club as 'Brahmastra' and 'Shamshera', which were announced years ago, went through multiple delays due to technical issues and COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, these films might succumb at the box office due to their lack of freshness.

Meanwhile, Ayan Mukerji, who has only two successful films to his name, that too almost a decade ago, has attracted speculation over his ability to handle a massive budget film. The same holds true for 'Shamsheras' director Karan Malhotra. Ayan and Karan have never directed any film that is even half the budget of their current productions, raising doubts about their credibility.

Ranbir Kapoor coming out of his shell

Ranbir Kapoor's filmography has majorly consisted of characters that fit with ease into his comfort zone of being a 'boy next door' who is flirtatious in nature and sets off on a journey of self-introspection. Ranbir's character in 'Brahmastra' falls in a similar light.

On the other hand, in 'Shamshera', Kapoor will be seen in a double role, playing the character of a dacoit. This somewhat anti-hero character who does masculine action sequences falls way out of his comfort zone. This wide gamut of characters that might make the audience feel either too familiar with or distant with the star’s image, might not work in his favour.

Content defines box-office success

The actor's comeback seems more of a challenge given the recent trend of big-budget movies' doing unsuccessful business at the box office and Bollywood trying its hands on a multi-starrer concept after ages. In the present scenario, audiences have matured into viewers who are more sensitive toward what they are watching and spending their money and time on. Subsequently, audiences want to see films that are not only entertaining but have some content in them.

Big or small, most Bollywood films are failing at the box office. This is due to several reasons, such as bad casting, poor performances, a weak screenplay that is underdeveloped, unnecessary subplots, and a reluctance to invest in new and better writers. The other major reason is the filmmaker's desire to compromise on the story’s relevance to appeal to the audience with lavish sets, costumes, and exotic locations.

Revival of multi-starrer genre in Bollywood

With time, audiences' tastes and preferences have transformed. Hence, makers have to create and market content that is original and one that excites audiences to throng the theatres. From the looks of it, 'Brahmastra' and 'Shamshera' seem to have this perfect combination that offers a good storyline and a multi-starrer cast, which Bollywood has been avoiding for some time now.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s death led to a debate on nepotism

The death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput riled up the audience against the Hindi film industry with accusations of having "gangs" and not providing opportunities to the "outsiders". His death has caused hatred in the audience against the industry, especially those who are considered Bollywood "insiders."

Films vs religious sentiments

On the contrary, 'Brahmastra' is already caught up in controversy for hurting religious sentiments in the ongoing boycott row. The film, which is inspired by Hindu mythology and God Shiva, was said to have hurt religious sentiments in one of the scenes that show Ranbir entering a temple wearing footwear. While 'Shamshera' has also been accused of offending religious sentiments, with people expressing outrage that Hindus are always portrayed as villains. While these online debates might be irrelevant; they could also have a negative impact on the film's performance.

Regardless of all the speculation, online debates, and controversy surrounding these two films, time will tell if they will be able to shatter box-office records like an 'RRR' or 'KGF 2'.

However, being optimistic about these films' ability to render epic and magnificent theatrical feats, there are a few jarring elements that may either make or break Ranbir's future in showbiz. Delayed release of ‘Shamshera’ and ‘Brahmastra’ SS Rajamouli's 'Baahubali' franchise has already introduced the Indian audience to a new style of a magnum opus, followed by KGF Chapters, and 'RRR'. Ranbir Kapoor coming out of his shell Ranbir Kapoor's filmography has majorly consisted of characters that fit with ease into his comfort zone of being a 'boy next door' who is flirtatious in nature and sets off on a journey of self-introspection. Content defines box-office success The actor's comeback seems more of a challenge given the recent trend of big-budget movies' doing unsuccessful business at the box office and Bollywood trying its hands on a multi-starrer concept after ages. Revival of multi-starrer genre in Bollywood With time, audiences' tastes and preferences have transformed. Also Read: 'Ted Lasso' star Brett Goldstein finally opens up about his cameo in 'Thor: Love and Thunder' Sushant Singh Rajput’s death led to a debate on nepotism The death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput riled up the audience against the Hindi film industry with accusations of having "gangs" and not providing opportunities to the "outsiders". His death has caused hatred in the audience against the industry, especially those who are considered Bollywood "insiders." Films vs religious sentiments On the contrary, 'Brahmastra' is already caught up in controversy for hurting religious sentiments in the ongoing boycott row.

Both Bollywood and Ranbir Kapoor need 'Shamshera' and 'Brahmastra' to work at the box office
