Former Miss World and actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan dominated social media conversations on Monday morning as she walked the ramp at the ongoing Paris Fashion Week. Aishwarya, who has been a brand ambassador for L'Oreal for years, represented the cosmetic giant at the Paris Fashion Show along with a star-studded list of international celebs that included the likes of Eva Longoria, Andie McDowell, Viola Davis and Kendall Jenner. The actress wore a golden, glittering outfit with a cape as she blew kisses, winked and smiled for the cameras during her ramp walk. While most fans of the actress lauded the "OG" queen strutting her stuff on the ramp, there were others who did not approve of her look. "My eyes, my eyes! What has she done to her face?" wrote a fan while another pointed out that her face looked ' over filled'. Aishwarya Rai is here! Stuns in green Valentino dress in her first appearance at Cannes 2023

At the onset, Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan may appear to be about the Chola dynasty and its rivalry with the Pandyas, but at its core- the story is of love, loss, and redemption. The first part of the film ably established the plot with multiple characters in place and ended with a middling cliffhanger which did not really leave room for curiosity. Nevertheless, the second part of the film, PS-2, picks up from where PS-1 ended with the dynasty facing the ultimate test as the lives of their heirs are in danger thereby putting the future of the empire at stake.

Ratnam's film is expansive and exhaustive and with multiple characters and sub-plots, demands your attention from the first frame itself. The film opens with a detailed flashback of how Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) and Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) parted. In the present day, there is a crisis in the Chola kingdom as news of Arunmozhi Varman drowning in the sea spreads. Since his body has not been found, the Pandyas, the enemy camp, are not celebrating just yet.

Meanwhile, we are told that Nandini had a hand in Arunmozhi's disappearance and now she has the task to finish Aditha as well. The story also addresses the role of the Oomai Rani, the mysterious grey-haired woman, who has saved Arunmozhi at crucial points in life.

Adapting a five-part expansive novel series by Kalki into two films is not easy and the detailing in terms of characterization is mind-boggling. Ratnam created a huge canvas with PS-1 and maintains the same momentum in the second part as well. It can be daunting and at times overwhelming, but the filmmaker's nuanced screenplay makes it gripping. The beauty of Ponniyin Selvan, though does not lie in its massive scale but in its moments. The little moments that the characters share with each other. Part 2 has a scene where the three siblings- Aditha, Arunmozhe and Kundavai share which truly is special. Then a scene featuring Kundavi mildly flirting and confessing to her feelings to a blindfolded Vallavaraiyan (Karthi), in a small patch of land in the middle of a river and the highly anticipated face-off between Aditha and Nandini which is the high point of the film.

Since the film's helmer is Mani Ratnam, the plot is performance-driven. While the story only allows limited screen time for each of the actors, it is in their respective scenes that these stars shine. Aishwarya as both the angsty Nandini and the serene Mandakini is pitch-perfect. She balances emotions well, someone who has been wronged, someone who has been living with hate inside her for a great part of her life and when she finally gets to meet her former lover, she falters. Vikram too complements Rai equally well in the face-off scene making it one of the best moments of the film. It's tragic yet one is hooked on watching the two lovers finding peace as they court death. Trisha and Karthi have limited screen time in the second part but equally, justify their roles. Jayam Ravi shines as the calm, just Arunmozhe and emotes through his eyes.

Apart from its visual grander (Ravi Varman's cinematography) and soulful music by Rahman, it is the screenplay of the film that makes Ponniyin Selvan 2 a worthy successor. It dives deep into the characters and explores the reasons that drove them to be what they are in the present day. An old hatred, regret, greed, responsibilities, guilt, love- so many emotions drive the characters of Ratnam's epic saga.

The film is detailed and long and feels stretched at some points. The narrative though comes together in the second half, near the climax with a great battle scene featuring Karthi and Jayam Ravi.

Ponniyin Selvan-2 works, despite its pace, the film is a fascinating watch for its great characters, detailed screenplay, and the scale, it's mounted on. Sure the Baahubali-esque frills are there, but Ratnam also boasts of a solid story - which is the ultimate winner of the show.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 review: Mani Ratnam weaves a fascinating tale of love, regret and redemption

Ponniyan Selvan could run because Baahubali walked. This was reiterated by filmmaker Mani Ratnam at a recent event in Hyderabad, where he and the cast of PS-2 gathered to promote the film which is up for release on April 28. Ratnam, while speaking about the film, thanked director SS Rajamouli and said if he had not made Baahubali and that too in two parts, Ratnam would not have been able to make Ponniyan Selvan. Ratnam admitted that Baahubali created a path for Ponniyin Selvan to be made in two parts.

An old clip of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan speaking about Alia Bhatt getting good opportunities thanks to Karan Johar's support is doing the rounds of the internet. The video is reportedly from 2018 when the actress was promoting her film Fanney Khan which co-starred Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. Several fans now feel that Aishwarya stated facts and also took a sly dig at Alia Bhatt.

In the clip, the former Miss World can be heard saying to a media outlet that Alia Bhatt gets only "good opportunities and work" in her lap because of her Karan Johar's support. Aishwarya then quickly praises Alia and how she has proved her talent in various movies.

“I have said this to her (Alia Bhatt) also, ‘It’s fantastic for you’. The kind of support Karan (Johar) has given to her from the beginning, and to have that kind of an establishment with you is very comforting because you know it is not tough. You can have it all laid out for the longest time. And she smiled. It’s great where you as an actor know there are only good opportunities ahead.”

“But what’s nice is she (Alia Bhatt) is also doing good work, along with great opportunities which are virtually there literally on her lap, regularly,” added Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan remembers her late father on his birth anniversary, shares emotional post

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has weighed in on the north vs south debate. The actress is promoting her upcoming film, Mani Ratnam's 'Poonniyin Selvan' in various cities. On Monday, Aishwarya along with other cast members of the film spoke to the Delhi press.

Aishwarya said she believed the present time was the best time for the Indian film industry as the content of various languages is now 'accessible' to top people through various platforms and they know "our cinema nationally".

The actress feels that it is an 'amazing time' to break away from the "typical way of looking at artists and cinema."
"I think it’s a great time right now, where all these barriers (of North and South) have gone down. People know our cinema nationally. In fact, they are wanting to see the cinema from every part." The actress was speaking in reference to a question asked to her co-star Karthi, who is a well-known face in Tamil cinema and making his debut in Bollywood with PS-1.

Aishwarya stated that the audience needed to see actors unconventionally, beyond the boundaries of language or region. She added, “Everybody can view cinema for what it is, across India. So I think we need to kind of break away from this conventional way of thinking and help our viewers, our audiences, and our readers also to not slide into that typical way of viewing.”

"Art has always been there, found the audience, and has been appreciated; so, have the artists. But avenues were limited. Today is a great time when it has become accessible to everybody. And proof of the pudding is in the eating, right? It is so evident that people are embracing and lapping up cinema from across the country," the actress further added.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on the north vs south debate: All barriers have gone down

Mani Ratnam's latest 'Ponniyin Selvan-1' may be set thousands of years ago, but the legendary filmmaker says the film's emotions are inherent to human beings in every era and hence the film holds relevance.

Ratnam along with the film's cast including Chiyan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi and Sobhitha Dhuliapala were in New Delhi on Monday to promote the film. The magnum opus releases in theatres in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi on September 30. 'Ponniyin Selvan-1' also known as PS-1 is based on a five-part novel series of the same name. The series was published in 1955 and is considered a classic in Tamil literature.

"It is set a thousand years back, written 70 years back but it is totally relevant today," told Ratnam to WION at the press meet. "Whatever the film speaks about, remains relevant. That is why so many attempts have been made to make a film out of the books- in the 1960s, '70s, '80s, 1990s - it was relevant in all those periods," Ratnam added.
The filmmaker added that human emotions remain the same - no matter the era the story is set in. "There are some elements which don't change. Human nature doesn't change, you know the struggle for power and growth, angst, desire, and jealousy doesn't change. All those are inherent to human nature," the maker added.

The story was written in the 1950s when society was largely different from what it is now. Did he have to tweak it to suit the taste of the audience in today's time?

"The beauty of the book is that it captures all these emotions. The soul and heart of the books are something that has stayed this long. It was difficult to adapt it because it was relevant for today or not. It is absolutely relevant. It was difficult to adapt it because it was written so beautifully," the filmmaker added.

The film's leading hero Vikram chimed in that he felt that the film's characters were bound by a common theme of love. "All the characters in the film are driven by love. Love for power, love for sibling, for husband- all kinds. But they are bound by the common theme of love- which is universal," the actor said.

Actor Karthi added that the story, originally written by Kalki, transcends age groups. "My 9-year-old daughter has started reading the books and she is addicted."

Set in the Chola Kingdom, the story of 'Pooniyin Selvan-1' is about power struggle for the throne. Ratnam revealed he had read the books when he was in school and had wanted to make a film around it when he started making films a few decades back. He even attempted to make one in the early 2000s but was not able to.

Kalki's book series is considered a classic in Tamil literature and several filmmakers over the years have tried to make films around them but have remained unsuccessful.

Ratnam said it was a task to translate a five-part book series into two-part films. There will be a second part of the film although no details on it have yet been shared by the makers.

The film also features Krishnan, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Jayam Ravi and Aishwarya Lekshmi among others. The film has been produced by Lyca Productions. The period drama is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's popular historical novel 'Ponniyin Selvan' (The Son Of Ponni).
The brilliant story, that revolves around the early life of prince Arulmozhi Varman, who later on went on to be known as the great Raja Raja Chozhan, is one of a kind.
Considering Aishwarya Rai has become selective with her work over the years and is rarely seen on screen, fans were truly excited to see a glimpse of her new film and flooded special media with compliments for the star.
