Brian Lara was perhaps the most stylish left-hander of all time, and above that, one of the greatest batters. Known for oozing class with his elegant strokeplay, he knows a bit or two about the bat swing and technicalities and upon being asked about the top T20I batter Abhishek Sharma’s rise, he had all but praises for the Indian batter. However, he pointed out one area where the left-handed opener must work on, which, he feels, would elevate him to the next level. Speaking at the CEAT Awards in Mumbai on Tuesday evening, Lara shed light on Abhishek’s game. Abhishek was the highest run-scorer during the 2025 Asia Cup, hitting 315 runs in seven contested matches. Brian Lara lauds Abhishek’s rise but points out one area the top T20I batter needs to work on

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has backed the next big thing in Indian cricket, Abhishek Sharma, to succeed Down Under. Picked in the 15-man T20I squad for the forthcoming Australia series, Abhishek will have all eyeballs on him after leading the runs tally in the just concluded 2025 Asia Cup. Known for his free-flowing cricket, Abhishek could be a handy customer in the Aussie conditions, reckons de Villiers. Although he failed to replicate his purple patch in the three-match One-Day series against Australia A in Kanpur, AB feels he is in the form of his life and upon getting his chance Down Under, Abhishek can only thrive. Speaking on his YouTube channel, de Villiers explains what makes Abhishek a batter to look out for in those conditions. Also read | Is Shubman Gill good enough a leader to win ODI series Down Under? ‘Impressed’ Finch contemplates “Abhishek Sharma is in the form of his life; some are saying he is the best opening batter in the world right now in this format. In a chat with the Indian Express, Simon revealed, “It’s more about his stance. He’s adjusted and slightly… He’s become more relaxed at the crease, not as tense and rigid. He’s able to access both sides of the ground. He’s able to get in really good positions. Doesn’t over-complicate the way in which he plays. He’s quite still at the point of impact.” “He plays the ball quite late. He presents a wonderful bat face. His head is in a beautiful, steady position. He watches the ball intently and can get himself in easy positions to be able to access various sides of the ground… It’s more mental for Abhi. He’s always been touted with lots of ability and skill, and now we’re seeing that start to flourish. That comes with mental toughness, a greater understanding of your own game," he added.

AB de Villiers backs ‘best opening batter’ Abhishek Sharma to succeed Down Under

India T20I opener Abhishek Sharma had a wonderful Asia Cup 2025 where he ended up as not only the highest run scorer but Player of the Tournament as well. Bowling great Shoaib Akhtar has urged the Pakistan Team to surrender their usual mindset in their quest to beat arch-rivals India in the Asia Cup Final on Sunday (Sep 28) in Dubai. Asia Cup 2025: Abhishek Sharma continues impressive run, slams back-to-back fifties

Abhishek Sharma proved to be India’s best batter on the day against Pakistan in the Super Four tie in Dubai on Sunday (Sep 21). The left-handed opener played a match-winning innings while chasing, scoring 74 off 39 balls, including five sixes and six fours. Although his wide range of shots and sixes received massive appreciation globally, his verbal altercations with Pakistan’s premier pacers, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, made headlines. Against Shaheen, Abhishek smashed a first-ball six over the fine leg, while against Haris Rauf, the left-hander enjoyed finding gaps at will, who also got into an ugly altercation with him. During a post-match show with the broadcasters, the host drew parallels between Abhishek hitting Shaheen for a first-ball six with Sehwag’s knack of hitting bowlers for a boundary on the first delivery; the most famous example of which was during the home ODI World Cup in 2011, when Sehwag hammered a first-ball boundary on four occasions. T20I cricket is all about high scores, explosive shots, nail-biting thrillers and cutthroat competitions. In this format, the tide changes in just a few balls, and a quick hundred affects the course of the game in no time. Over the years, some batters have played jaw-dropping knocks in 20-over cricket. Let’s take a look at some of the fastest hundreds ever scored in men’s T20 internationals. (Disclaimer: This list excludes knocks from Zimbabwe and other ICC associate nations.)
1. Rohit Sharma and David Miller - 35 balls.
The record for the fastest T20I hundred belongs jointly to Rohit Sharma and David Miller. Rohit’s 35-ball ton came against Sri Lanka in Indore in December 2017, finishing with 118 off 43 balls. Miller achieved the feat just two months earlier, hammering an unbeaten 101 off 36 balls against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom.
2. Tim David and Abhishek Sharma - 37 balls
Two of the modern-day hitters share the second spot with Tim David, who recently joined the elusive list. On February 2, 2025, Abhishek Sharma lit up the Wankhede with a 37-ball hundred against England, smashing 13 sixes and 7 fours. On July 26, 2025, at Warner Park, Tim David scored a blistering century (an unbeaten 102 off 37 deliveries) under pressure. Coming in at 87/4, his fireworks turned the match as Australia chased down a mammoth total of 215 with 23 balls to spare. Also read | What is the highest 10th wicket partnership in Test. He smashed a 39-ball century, scoring 118 off 46 balls with 10 fours and 11 sixes. Despite his heroics, South Africa chased down 259 with seven balls to spare.
4. Walking in early against Bangladesh, he took charge from the start, reaching his century in just 40 balls. His 111 off 47 balls, packed with 11 fours and 8 sixes, powered India to 297/6.

Fastest fifties in IPL 2025: 7 knocks that have lit up the ongoing season

Even with the bat and without it, Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill was busy throughout his team’s IPL 2025 home game against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday evening. Gill was among the runs in the first innings, scoring a brilliant 76 off 38 balls, striking at 200, before a close yet debatable run-out call led to his dismissal and chaos off the field, with Gill confronting the official near his team’s dug-out.
Though that was an ugly sight for an onlooker, given how furiously Gill approached the umpire and argued about his dismissal, it didn’t end there as he again got into a verbal tussle with the on-field umpire over a questionable DRS LBW call later in the second innings.
Already unhappy and irked with the third umpire’s call that adjudged him run out earlier, Gill didn’t leave the on-field official’s sight after he adjudged Abhishek Sharma not out for an LBW call in the second innings.
The incident happened in the 14th over when GT pacer Prasidh Krishna bowled a Yorker that hit Abhishek’s pads on the leg side as he shuffled across, with the umpire adjudging it not out. When the matter went upstairs, the replays showed that even though a little part of the ball was inside the line of the stumps, because it pitched closer to the pads, the DRS stood for the 'Impact' that went in Abhishek’s favour.
That moment, however, triggered Gill’s emotions, as he chased the umpire and continued to argue with him, only for the batter in question here, Abhishek Sharma, to intervene and cool down the situation.

SRH out of IPL 2025

The SunRisers Hyderabad became the third team, after Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, to get knocked out of IPL 2025 after losing their seventh of the ten matches this season.

The Indian Cricket Board announced the central contract list for the upcoming season (2024-25) on Monday (Apr 21), including several newcomers like batter Abhishek Sharma, seamer Harshit Rana, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and spinner Varun Chakravarthy, among others. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are also back after getting dropped for not honouring BCCI’s orders early last year.
After the BCCI made it mandatory for each centrally contracted player not picked for any Indian squad, injured or unavailable for any unavoidable personal reason, to appear for their respective state teams in domestic cricket, Iyer and Kishan decided against obeying the orders. While Iyer cited back issues for his absence from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy games despite NCA doctors clearing him of any injury, Ishan remained unavailable for selection due to mental health issues.
Coming back to BCCI's central contract list, the top-tier category (A+) has four players, including ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma, star batter Virar Kohli, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and ace quick Jasprit Bumrah; the list, however, excludes Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his Test retirement last year, although Rohit, Kohli and Jadeja retain their places despite stepping aside from the T20Is earlier in 2024.
On the other hand, the BCCI promoted gloveman Rishabh Pant from Grade B to Grade A, which also includes first-team players like Mohammed Siraj, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami. Shreyas Iyer, India’s mainstay white-ball batter, is also part of the Grade B, including Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Ishan Kishan, however, has been added to the C category.

The new entrants

The ones who received their maiden BCCI central contracts include rising T20I batter Abhishek Sharma, batters Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, alongside seamers Akash Deep and Harshit Rana. Team India’s mystery spinner Varun also earned his first BCCI contract.
However, a few were also left out, including Shardul Thakur, KS Bharat, Avesh Khan and keeper-batter Jitesh Sharma.
Although the BCCI did not mention the contract amounts for each category, an ESPNcricinfo report suggests INR 7 crore plus for the A+ category, INR 5 crore (A), INR 3 crore (B) and INR 1 crore (C).
