Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Saturday that Tehran's seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is still on the table, and that Iran remains ready to talk if Washington meets its conditions. Avi Gil served as the Military Secretary to the Prime Minister from July 2021 to May 2024. In this role, he was the primary defence liaison for Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett, Yair Lapid, and Benjamin Netanyahu, sitting in on security cabinet meetings and handling crucial top-secret communications.&nbsp;Gil became the centre of significant political attention in Israel due to a bombshell interview broadcast on Channel 12 News. Gil asserted that Netanyahu actively passed up clear-cut opportunities to execute a deal to bring Israeli hostages home from Gaza alive. He also claimed that all heads of Israel's security services had continuously warned Netanyahu that deep societal divisions over his government’s judicial policies were severely eroding Israel's military deterrence. He also accused Netanyahu's office of attempting to cover up a delayed response by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the opening minutes of the October 7 attack.

<h2>Strait of Hormuz remains key issue</h2>The latest diplomatic developments follow Trump's rejection on Saturday of a proposal from Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. On Sunday, Trump told Axios that he expected talks between the two sides to resume in the coming days. The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the broader dispute because the narrow waterway normally handles about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.&nbsp;The route has been effectively blockaded by Tehran since the conflict startedwith US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, according to the report. The disruption has also affected energy and consumer prices in the United States. Gas and other product prices have risen sharply since the conflict began, adding to domestic political pressure on the Trump administration ahead of the US midterm elections in November.

Trump expects Iran talks this week despite rejecting Tehran’s proposal: Report

Iran has proposed a seven-day plan to the United States that would halt hostilities, reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for comprehensive talks over Tehran’s nuclear program. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced the proposal on Thursday during a press briefing on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Araghchi said the plan had been delivered to Washington through intermediaries and closely follows commitments outlined in a memorandum of understanding reached between Iran and the United States in June before the agreement unraveled.&nbsp;He said Tehran was prepared to begin implementing the proposal as soon as Washington accepted its conditions. “We have introduced a plan to the United States through the intermediators that if certain conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz would be open on the end of the seventh day and talks would restart,” Araghchi said. Araghchi also said it would be better, if an agreement could be reached before the US midterm elections.&nbsp;A US official familiar with the discussions said Washington was engaged in positive and constructive talks through intermediaries but was not prepared to rush into an agreement. The proposal came as US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered sharply contrasting speeches at the UN. Trump threatened Iran with ‘annihilation’ if Tehran failed to reach a deal, while Pezeshkian rejected pressure from Washington and said Iran would not be bullied.<h2>Iran’s conditions for reopening Hormuz</h2>Under the conditions outlined by Araghchi, all hostilities would stop during the seven-day period, including fighting in Lebanon.Tehran is also seeking the release of frozen Iranian assets, estimated at more than $12 billion, a waiver of sanctions on Iranian oil and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iran. On the seventh day, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened.&nbsp;After that, Araghchi said, comprehensive negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program would begin immediately. The Strait of Hormuz has become a central issue in the diplomatic efforts because of its importance to global energy and shipping. Recent Iranian proposals have similarly tied reopening the waterway to US steps to ease military and economic pressure. Trump has repeatedly said his principal objective is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and that he would pursue that goal either through negotiations or further military action.&nbsp;Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/we-do-not-wish-to-continue-it-s-america-that-must-choose-iran-president-pezeshkian-calls-on-us-to-end-war-1790298430033">'We do not wish to continue. It's America that must choose': Iran president Pezeshkian calls on US to end war</a><h2>US-Iran talks continue in New York</h2>The proposal came as US officials continued efforts to revive diplomacy with Tehran on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a three-hour meeting involving US and Iranian officials, mediated by Qatar, did not produce a breakthrough. Araghchi had also met US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, earlier in the week. Qatar acted as an intermediary by passing messages between the two sides. Araghchi described the discussions as ‘productive’ and said the exchange of messages was continuing. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismaeil Baghaei said additional mediated meetings could take place in the coming days.<h2>Iran’s economy under pressure</h2>The diplomatic effort comes as Iran's economy faces severe pressure. Inflation has pushed up the cost of basic food items, while shortages of medicines and disruptions to trade have added to the strain on ordinary Iranians. Analysts have said Trump faces competing considerations over whether to reach an agreement before the US midterm elections or maintain economic pressure on Tehran in an effort to extract further concessions. The proposed seven-day roadmap now places the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief and nuclear negotiations at the center of the latest US-Iran diplomatic effort.

Araghchi described the discussions as ‘productive’ and said the exchange of messages was continuing. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismaeil Baghaei said additional mediated meetings could take place in the coming days. Iran’s economy under pressure The diplomatic effort comes as Iran's economy faces severe pressure.

West Asia remains on edge as Iran and Oman move closer to finalizing a Strait of Hormuz shipping agreement while tensions continue to rise across the region. Israel has launched fresh strikes on southern Lebanon, with the IDF citing Hezbollah ceasefire violations. At the same time, Iran has reportedly warned Gulf nations that their energy infrastructure could become targets if they fail to persuade the United States to halt military action.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has reportedly urged U.S. President Donald Trump to delay military action and prioritize diplomacy. Meanwhile, Washington continues to express frustration over stalled talks with Tehran, even as negotiations over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz continue through Oman.

Tensions between Iran and Ukraine have escalated after Tehran condemned what it described as a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, the strike caused an explosion aboard the vessel early Saturday, killing one sailor and injuring another. Iran called the incident an act of aggression and accused Ukraine of violating the United Nations Charter by extending the conflict beyond the battlefield. Tehran also urged the UN Security Council, the European Union, and the international community to condemn the alleged attack.
Iranian officials reiterated that the country has not directly participated in the Russia-Ukraine war and warned that it would defend its national interests under international law. Tehran also held Kyiv and its supporters responsible for any further escalation in regional tensions.
The issue was raised by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during a phone conversation with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had carried out strikes on logistics hubs, an oil refinery, a fuel depot, and military-linked maritime assets in the Caspian Sea, including vessels allegedly used for military cargo shipments involving Iran and a Russian warship.

Critics argue that such a deal would not serve Iran's interests and could weaken Tehran's leverage over the Strait of Hormuz. They have also accused Iranian negotiators of making excessive concessions during the talks. Additional videos circulating on social media appeared to show demonstrators outside the Foreign Ministry building in Tehran chanting "Araghchi, resign" and "Ghalibaf, resign," AFP reported. The slogans were directed at Araghchi and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is also serving as Iran's chief negotiator in the discussions. Meanwhile, Trump and Pakistani officials said on Saturday that a peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict could be signed as early as Sunday. Iranian officials, however, appeared more cautious and stopped short of confirming a specific timeline for any potential deal.

Critics in Iran have opposed the proposed agreement, arguing that it compromises national interests and gives away valuable leverage in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday warned the US against any adventurism and claimed that Iran's missile inventory and launcher capacity actually stand at 120% compared to levels on February 28, 2024. He accused the US of sabotaging diplomatic solutions through military operations. In a social media post on the platform X, Araghchi warned that any “pressure tactic” will drag the US into a “quagmire”."Every time a diplomatic solution is on the table, the U.S. opts for a reckless military adventure. Is it a crude pressure tactic? Or the result of a spoiler once again duping POTUS into another quagmire?" read the post. This comes in direct contradiction of the Washington Post report that the US intelligence claims that Iran only retains 75 per cent of its prewar mobile launchers and 70 per cent of its missile stockpiles. He asserted that Iran maintains 1000 per cent readiness to defend its nation. “Whatever the causes, the outcome is the same: Iranians never bow to pressure,” he added.&nbsp;

Iran has maintained its control over the vital naval chokepoint in the Strait of Hormuz and targets any “unauthorised” passage, while the US have put in effect its own blockade of Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf. Washington and Tehran are negotiating a US proposal for both sides to reach an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and cease hostilities for 30 days. US secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington was expecting a response from Iran today to its proposal to end the war. Trump continues to swing between never having a deadline and a 24-hour ultimatum. President Trump’s latest ultimatum is a demand for Iran to sign a comprehensive "new deal" immediately.Earlier on Friday, the US Central Command claimed its forces were blocking 70 tankers from entering or leaving Iranian ports.“These commercial ships have the capacity to transport over 166 million barrels of Iranian oil worth an estimated $13 billion-plus,” it said in a post on X. The US Navy has blockaded Iran’s ports since April 13, choking off crucial revenues for the country that relies almost entirely on the Strait of Hormuz to export its oil. Approximately 15,000 ships, 200+ aircraft, and 20+ wraships are deployed in the blockade.&nbsp;

Abbas Araghchi makes a third visit to Pakistan within 48 hours, highlighting intense shuttle diplomacy as Islamabad continues its role as a key mediator in the ongoing US-Iran crisis. The repeated visits come after high-level talks in Russia, as Tehran pushes its terms and communicates messages through intermediaries rather than direct negotiations with Washington.

Iranian delegation arrives in Islamabad for US talks hosted by Pakistan, but says negotiations will begin only if Washington meets Tehran’s preconditions amid fragile tensions

An Iranian negotiating delegation headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf arrived in Islamabad on Friday (April 10) for peace talks with the United States, according to Iranian media reports, marking the beginning of a crucial diplomatic phase aimed at de-escalating ongoing tensions. “An Iranian negotiating delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf arrived in Islamabad on Friday for peace talks with the United States,” Iranian media said, adding that negotiations would proceed only if Washington accepted Tehran’s ‘preconditions’. The delegation reportedly includes senior political, military, and economic officials such as Iran’s foreign minister, the defence council secretary, the central bank governor, and several members of parliament. Their arrival in Islamabad comes ahead of anticipated direct discussions between Iranian and US representatives, with Pakistan hosting the talks amid fragile ceasefire conditions and ongoing mistrust between the two sides. Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, accused the US on Wednesday (April 8) of violating the two-week ceasefire agreement. “The deep historical distrust we hold toward the United States stems from its repeated violations of all forms of commitments, a pattern that has regrettably been repeated once again,” Ghalibaf said in a statement posted on social media. Three parts of Iran’s 10-point ceasefire proposal have been violated, Ghalibaf added: Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon, the entry of a drone into Iranian airspace, and the denial of the Islamic Republic’s right to enrich uranium.&nbsp;“In such a situation, a bilateral ceasefire or negotiations is unreasonable,” the parliamentary speaker said. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (April 7) that Iran’s proposal was a workable basis for negotiations. The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. Ghalibaf’s statement came less than a day after Trump agreed to halt attacks for two weeks in exchange for Iran allowing ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz during that period. Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also criticized Israeli claims over its attacks on Lebanon, saying the US must choose between a ceasefire or continued war via Israel.&nbsp;Araghchi was reacting to the Israeli attack in and around Beirut that killed over a hundred people. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said earlier that strikes on Lebanon were not part of the ceasefire plan. “The Iran–US Ceasefire terms are clear and explicit: the U.S. must choose between a ceasefire or continued war via Israel. It cannot have both," Araghchi wrote in a post on X, sharing a post by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declaring the ceasefire. “The world sees the massacres in Lebanon. The ball is in the US court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments,” Araghchi added.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/china-s-role-in-brokering-us-iran-ceasefire-in-focus-after-trump-s-claim-1775670309932/embed">https://www.wionews.com/videos/china-s-role-in-brokering-us-iran-ceasefire-in-focus-after-trump-s-claim-1775670309932/embed</a>

Iran accuses the US of violating the ceasefire; Ghalibaf cites Israeli strikes, drones, and uranium limits. Araghchi warns the US, says, ‘ceasefire or war.’

In the ongoing US‑Iran war crisis, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran’s armed forces are prepared to halt their defensive strikes if offensive attacks against the country stop, effectively tying Iran’s military response to a cessation of hostile actions by the United States and allies. The comments were made in the context of efforts to negotiate a broader ceasefire, including talks around a two‑week truce linked to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and mediated by regional powers.
