Lagaan, Delhi Belly, Dhobi Ghaat: 8 films produced by Aamir Khan that you need to watch

Aamir Khan is back with his trademark, quintessential feel-good movie. Over the years, the actor has carved out a niche in Indian cinema for making entertaining films that convey important social messages. In the past few years, as the actor tried to experiment in typical commercial fare, the set image dwindled. In 2025, he seems to be back in his comfort zone, playing a reluctant hero in Sitaare Zameen Par, where he typically takes a backseat and lets others shine. Of course, the superstar's presence looms large on this one, but Sitaare Zameen Par works because of its messaging and the way it is delivered.

Helmed by RS Prasanna, who had directed the delightful and effective Shubh Mangal Savdhan earlier, Sitaare Zameen Par is the classic underdog story. On many occasions, the film feels cliche and predictable, but it is the bunch of new actors, all neurodivergent, that uplifts this regular story.

Plot of Sitaare Zameen Par

Aamir Khan plays hot-headed Gulshan, assistant basketball coach of the Delhi State Team. A DUI case lands him in court, which orders him to do three months of community service and pay 5K as a fine. Gulshan agrees to evade jail time, but the catch is that social service translates into coaching a team of specially abled players for National Championships. Rude and brash, Gulshan initially is reluctant to coach a team of 'mad' people, but over a course of time, realises that normalcy is a relative term and everyone's normal is different.

While he is training the team, he also has to navigate his troubled marriage to Suneeta (Genelia Deshmukh) and work out his issues with his mother (Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari). Does Gulshan manage to win over the team and his family forms the rest of the story.

While the film is from Khan's character's perspective and his coming-of-age story, it heavily focuses on delivering a message of inclusivity.

Films have been made in the past about specially abled individuals, but in most at some point in the story, the viewers are compelled to feel sympathetic and bad for these characters. Sitaare Zameen Par takes a conscious route to not use the sympathy card for these Sitaares (The name of their basketball team). They are shown as normal as us. Instead, writer Divy Nidhi Sharma demands that you change your perspective about them. One has a girlfriend, one is obsessed with flights and diseases, one smokes, and one works double shifts at work. Their problems are made to be as usual as ours, making them relatable and, in the process, making us think about the definition of normal. Everyone’s normal is different, it's relative- a message that runs through the film.

Humour always helps in delivering a strong message. Sitaare zameen par is no different. I found myself smiling through most parts of the film. There are several heartwarming moments sprinkled through the narrative. One involves the team collectively conspiring to make one of the members take a shower after years of hydrophobia. Another has Gulshan finding out a big secret about his mother.

The film does oversimplify the way society perceives specially abled people. Their problems are neatly enveloped with dollops of humour, but I am not complaining. At least the film aims to start a conversation, and that’s wonderful.

The Sitaares of Sitaare Zameen Par

Credit should be given to director RS Prasanna, producer Aamir Khan, and casting director Tess Joseph for picking up a bunch of fun, confident, and talented neurodivergent actors. They breathe life into the slightly preachy and predictable plot with humour and genuine emotions. While Bollywood actors like Priyanka Chopra, SRK, and Kalki Koechlin have played specially abled characters in the past, no one has brought authenticity to the characters as much as these new actors have. Full marks to the makers, for casting them instead of trying regular, known faces in these roles. Sitaare Zameen Par shines because of this bunch of actors.

Aamir Khan, the producer

This isn’t the best film of Aamir Khan the actor. He hams in parts, is over the top in others, and sleepwalks through the rest of it. But Aamir Khan, the producer, should be credited for bringing authenticity and required rawness to a story like Sitaare Zameen Par. The film may be inspired – and some say a frame-to-frame copy of Spanish film Champions- but it is well-intended and entertains you throughout.

Aamir and Genelia’s chemistry as a warring couple also falls flat on several occasions, even though it is a delight to watch the actress in a full-fledged role in a feature film after a long time. She brings her effervescent charm to her character Suneeta, who is a positive influence on grumpy Gulshan’s life.

Aamir’s scenes with his onscreen mother, played by Dolly Ahluwalia, however, shine. The two have great onscreen chemistry and look the part of a mother and a son. While Gulshan is a negative man who has only learnt to escape tricky situations in his life, his mother is immensely positive in life, having raised him single-handedly, yet not bitter about her past experiences.

Flaws

Sitaare Zameen Par is perhaps not the most perfect and correct representation of a community that is almost always overlooked the society. It uses humour to dilute the issues, it has Aamir playing a reluctant saviour to a bunch of underdogs, and it has a predictable plot. It is a spiritual sequel of Taare Zameen Par (2007), which had a more nuanced take on parent-child relationships and on Dyslexia. Sitaare Zameen Par tackles issues more on the surface level.

But I am willing to overlook the flaws because the story is heartwarming, and it makes you think about autism and Down syndrome differently, hours after you have left the cinema hall.

Sitaare Zameen Par, however, is the kind of Aamir Khan film that fans love to watch and cheer. It’s a simple, heartwarming film which shines not because of Khan but more because of its message and the new actors who debut along with the superstar.

Sitaare Zameen Par releases nationwide in theaters on June 20. Don’t miss it.

Sitaare Zameen Par review: Heartwarming and imperfect, Aamir Khan the producer triumphs over the actor

Actor Aamir Khan is set to return to the big screen with his movie Sitaare Zameen Par. A day before its release, Khan hosted a special screening in Mumbai.

For the event, Aamir appeared with his girlfriend, Gauri Spratt. The couple walked the red carpet hand in hand, joined by Aamir’s youngest son, Azad Rao Khan. This marked Aamir and Gauri’s first public appearance together at an event.

With broad smiles, Aamir, Gauri, and Azad posed for the paparazzi. Aamir wore an off-white sherwani with intricate embroidery. He paired it with churidar pants and brown boots. Gauri looked elegant in a turquoise green saree with golden embroidery, paired with a green blouse and a golden necklace. She kept her makeup subtle for the occasion.

Azad, looking smart, wore a dark blue suit with a white shirt and black shoes as he posed alongside his father and Gauri.

Aamir’s daughter, Ira Khan, also attended the premiere with her husband, Nupur Shikhare.

Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt hold hands, steal the spotlight at Sitaare Zameen Par screening

Aamir first introduced Gauri to the media on his 60th birthday in March. Since then, the couple has been spotted together at multiple events. Aamir was previously married to Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao.

Filmmaker RS Prasanna believes cinema plays an important role in starting important conversations and forging relationships. His latest film Sitaare Zameen Par- featuring Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh- is hours away from release and while the director feels it is a big responsibility to be working with Aamir- he is confident that the film, much like his debut Bollywood feature Shubh Mangal Savdhan, will start an important conversation about inclusivity.

Ahead of the release of the highly anticipated film, RS Prasanna spoke about working with Aamir Khan, the actor and the producer, his experience of auditioning 2500 plus neurodivergent actors and how he still can’t believe that he got to work with Aamir Khan so early in his career.

Here are the excerpts from the interview:

WION: Firstly, I want to congratulate you for Sitaare Zameen Par. It's one of the most anticipated films of the year. Aamir Khan’s films are always a celebration for his fans. How was it like to work with the superstar? Does working with Aamir Khan come with an added responsibility?

RS Prasanna: Yes, of course, working with Aamir Khan comes with a lot of responsibility, because one, the 1st thing that hits you is like a ton of bricks when you realise this man trusts you so much, so you can't let him down. I was suffering from impostor syndrome for a long time at the beginning. Working with Aamir was like climbing Mount Everest for me. I was really scared. Yeah, because I'm not used to that terrain. I was very anxious. I remember telling my wife that maybe, after meeting him, Ak will say he made a mistake, and he'll kick me out . But luckily, that didn’t happen.

After a long interaction online, I met him in person post-lockdown. We had this lovely whole day session of just hanging out like friends. He made me feel so comfortable. And it was like I was talking to a long lost friend and not a superstar that he is. So credit to him. I won't be lying if I say that I'm completely relaxed. I just feel this immense responsibility that I can't let him down and it comes out of love.

WION: How did Sitaare Zameen Par come to you?

RSP: I got a call from Aamir’s manager. He asked me if I had an interesting story or a script that I could pitch to AK Productions. I remember thinking in my head, ‘Oh, wow! I have this.’ I always wanted to work with Aamir but maybe on my 10th film. Little did I know that it would happen so soon.

When this story was offered to me, what at the time it was untitled. And at that time, what struck me and my writer Divy Nidhi Sharma, was the enormous opportunity for fun in this movie. It was an incredible story that came to us, and it had all the exciting ingredients to make a mainstream film, but with a difference. We had had an opportunity to speak about a lot of things, and we had this opportunity to cast 100 people of neurodivergent. I just felt that the story was so powerful, and I remember taking it to Amir, sir, and when he said, Yes, that's when things got really exciting and anxious for me. I felt, ‘Oh God, maybe Amir sir is making a big mistake by making me the director. Will I be able to do this?’ I was all nervous until I met him.

WION: Were Aamir and Genelia both the first choices for their respective roles?

RSP: So sometimes a cast just leaps at your face. Amir Sir was the 1st person who came to my mind for the film. Once he came on board, we started the casting process, and we were discussing which other actors I'd like to work with. And so, in one of those discussions, Aamir Sir said, ‘Hey, you know what? So we were about to test some actors right? I just met Ritesh and Genelia after a long time. And do you want to meet her? I mean, what do you feel?’ I said, sir actually, she might be the perfect person for this character, and when you see the movie you know there's so much in the movie that her character brings to the forefront. But again, we did our readings. We did our test shoot with Aamir and Genelia before finalizing.

Aamir and Genelia

WION: Your first Hindi film, Shub Mangal Savdhan, was such a sweet film. But I observe a pattern. Both Shubh Mangal and Sitaare are message-driven films. Do you see cinema as a medium for societal change?

RSP: Not so much societal change, but I feel a human conversation. I'm a person who loves conversations, and I am quite appalled by the fact that growing up in a middle-class household, I was the guy saying all the awkward stuff. And then everyone is grown up. I used to be the kid who called out hypocrisy, and I used to just speak my mind and get in a lot of trouble because of that. I was attracted to cinema and books that asked questions that others were afraid of asking. When it came to cinema, I had to define who I am by making my 1st film Kalyana Samayal Saadham right. It came organically to me. I think my personality and everything came together in the film.

And the fact that people are saying ‘Oh, my God! How can you say the story?’ That is exciting. So Sitaare Zameen Par is yet another conversation that makes people uncomfortable. So maybe I should have it, you know. Also I think humor is a great kind of softener. A lot of conversations, when you have it through characters and through humor, people accept it. More than societal change, my cinema enables human conversations. It's about relationships for me, you know. Society is, after all, an expansion of the individual, isn't it?

WION: Sitaare Zameen Par is launching 10 very unique actors in the film industry. While it's fascinating that you have cast differently abled people in those roles, does it come with certain challenges?

RSP: Everything is challenging. Human relationships are challenging. But that is what is exciting for me. I don't see it as a challenge. I see it as an opportunity to do something fun and do something new. Because theoretically, one knows that it is possible. Otherwise, one doesn't embark on the journey.

I think more than working with neurodivergent actors, the casting process was more challenging. I knew that once we get these actors, we have processes, workshops and all to get there right. But we need to be able to find these actors, and for that, I would say kudos to my producer, Mr. Amir Khan, because he was the one who gave me the confidence to audition actors. I was helped along the way by amazing casting Director Tess Joseph, and then Anmol also came along as a casting director. So we reached out to so many organizations, we did 2,500 plus intros and auditions, and from there we kind of got these amazing actors right. I was very confident about the quality, but we need quantity, too.

WION: What's been the biggest learning for you while making Sitaare Zameen Par?

RSP: That dreams can come true because I never in my wildest dreams imagined I'd sit next to Mr. Amir Khan, let alone work with him, let alone direct him. If you do things from your heart, and maybe the universe will indeed conspire to make it happen. The biggest learning is to listen to the voice of intuition, which is always a whisper.

WION: Aamir Khan is known to be a perfectionist. What is it like to have Amir Khan on the set, even when he's not facing the camera? Does he give input? Or he's more of a director's actor. He follows instructions?

RSP: He's a director's delight. So he is a person who completely submits to the film, to the script, and is very respectful of protocol. He's very respectful towards any suggestion he gives any insights he has. There's not one input he will ever give you that is about himself as an actor; it is more about the film. He's very selfless. He is just phenomenal to work with. Forget Aamir, my Sitaares gave me suggestions all the time!

It is now being reported that the film body had asked the makers to make a few additions to the movie, including adding a quote of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the opening disclaimer. The film is a spiritual sequel to the beloved 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. There are no details yet regarding the certification issued by the CBFC. Khan, who features in the lead and is also the producer of the film, reportedly met CBFC officials to sort out the issue after he initially refused to make the suggested cuts. According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the release of the release of the film was in limbo due to the tussle between the Censor Board and Aamir Khan. A revising committee was put in place, which asked the makers to replace the terms 'Michael Jackson' with 'Lovebirds' and 'Business Woman' with 'Business Person'. The Revising Committee also asked the producers to remove a visual with the word 'kamal'. Reports suggest that the changes were made by the makers. Sitaare Zameen Par has been directed by RS Prasanna, will hit the screens on Friday (June 21). The film also stars Genelia Deshmukh and launches 10 new faces.

The bullet has been fired from the gun.’ Prasanna told me, ‘I am from Chennai. We take the bullet that’s been fired and put it back in the gun!” Sitaare Zameen Par was officially announced in October 2023, and filming began in February 2024.
Ever heard a song and wondered what's its story - how it came about, why the makers placed it in a particular sequence, why it's picturised a certain way or why it features some specific scenes? If you've found yourself pondering over any of the above points on more than one occasion, well, then, you've landed at the right place. Here, in The Song Story, we decode the making of some of Indian cinema's most memorable songs.

Behind the beats of Tere Hawaale From Laal Singh Chaddha

On August 11, 2022, Laal Singh Chaddha hit the big screen. Stakes were high for the official Hindi remake of the 1994 American film Forrest Gump. Helmed by Advait Chandan, the film brought together Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, a pair that had previously worked together in 3 Idiots and Talaash: The Answer Lies Within, among other films. Despite mixed reviews and decent word of mouth, the big-budget production tanked at the box office. The film, however, generated buzz with its subsequent arrival on OTT months later.

OG Forrest Gump Tom Hanks gives thumbs up to Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha

But even amidst the underwhelming numbers at the ticket windows, its song 'Tere Hawaale' tugged at the heartstrings of viewers. Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics, Pritam Chakraborty's music, Shilpa Rao and Arijit Singh's voices - the song had just the right names backing it. And just like the film, the song continues to find love years after its release, especially during the wedding season.

But did you know it didn't actually start out as a wedding song. The original brief, as revealed in a recent making video of the song, was something that would fit the idea of a childhood first love - to trace Laal and Rupa's love story in the film. However, once the song was written and composed, the makers felt it doesn't fit the pre-decided narrative and instead, would do wonders as a wedding song. And so it did.

Aamir Khan shares his audition tape for Laapataa Ladies, netizens feel Ravi Kishan was a better choice

Notably, the picturisation of the song took inspiration from a real-life wedding. "The idea popped up from there, how simply you can take it into your backyard - only this whole wedding, not in the premise, but taking it a little away from the house," explained production designer Mustafa Stationwala.

However, it wasn't the smoothest of shoots. Strong gusts of wind made filming so challenging at the location that several crew members had to be stationed out of frame to hold the pillars from falling. "But people are humming the song and enjoying the whole breadth of it," he added.

Costume designer Maxima Basu echoed a similar sentiment about the energy during the shoot of the track. "Actually the blessings flew with it," she said. The track that sums up the essence of the film and the duo's love story features in the Anand Karaj ceremony of Laal and Rupa. Those who've watched the film would know life comes a full circle for its two lead characters and the song encapsulates it all too well.
