India is gearing up for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh, starting in just two days, and Kuldeep Yadav, the ace spinner, admits feeling pressured switching from the IPL mode to red-ball cricket. Although ready and raring to go in his shot at redemption following an underwhelming IPL season, Kuldeep wants to get back to picking up wickets and feeling the same when he is at the top of his game. "It is tough when you switch from IPL cricket to red-ball cricket," Kuldeep said in a chat with PTI facilitated by JioHotstar. After Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews became the first batter in all of international cricket to be ‘timed out’ during the 2023 World Cup clash against Bangladesh, Bhutan batter Ritshi Choden became the first women’s cricketer to be dismissed similarly. Choden took more than 90 seconds to arrive at the crease during a T20I against Nepal, with the fielder’s appeal upheld by the on-field umpires. Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), however, apologised for the decision, saying that despite this falling within the rule books, it does not reflect the ‘spirit of the game’. This instance occurred in the first over of the run chase during an ACC Premier Cup tie between the two teams in Malaysia. After opener Ngawang Choden departed for a golden duck, Ritshi, who was supposed to walk in next, was likely not ready to come out. She, however, jogged in with gloves and a helmet in her hand and was seen chatting with the square-leg umpire. Also read | ‘Could have handled it better’: Ryan ten Doeschate on India’s number 3 Test selection Soon after, the Nepalese fielders appealed as soon as Choden reached the batting crease. "The incident involving the timed-out dismissal of a Bhutanese batter during today's match does not reflect the values and spirit of cricket that the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) strives to uphold," CAN said. "On behalf of the Cricket Association of Nepal, we extend our sincere apologies for the actions of our Women's National Team in this matter. While the dismissal was effected within the Laws of Cricket, we recognise that the spirit of the game extends beyond the written laws and must remain central to our conduct at all times. "As a developing cricketing nation, we place the utmost importance on sportsmanship, mutual respect, and fair play. We acknowledge that this incident has fallen short of those standards and regret any disappointment it may have caused. World Boxing Rankings: Vishva, Priya break into top 3; Jaismine claims top spot

Since Cheteshwar Pujara’s exit from India’s Test side, the two-time WTC Final runners-up have failed to find a replacement for the crucial number three spot. Even though India tried several newcomers, including Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair and even Washington Sundar, nothing has worked yet. Currently sitting sixth in the WTC standings and needing to win at least seven of the remaining nine matches in this cycle, barring this Afghanistan Test, Team India needs to address this quickly. Speaking on the same, India's assistant coach, Ryan Ten Doeschate, said the management could have done better in nailing the number three spot. The potent number three position is perhaps the most significant in the batting lineup, with countless legends embracing it over the years. Former IPL Chairman Lalit Modi has made a bold prediction about the future of women's cricket, predicting that women's franchise teams could achieve billion-dollar valuations within the next 15 years. Speaking to ANI, Modi highlighted the rapid growth of women's cricket, particularly through the Women's Premier League (WPL), and said the sport is on course to become one of the world's most valuable sporting properties. "It is also going to go to another level. Amazingly, Indian cricket is going to get better. Women's cricket, the crowds are filling up." Drawing comparisons with the early days of the IPL, he added, “What the men's IPL was 20 years ago, women's cricket has reached that level already. Mr. Adani paid ₹1,600 crore for a women's team (Gujarat Giants). Conversely, we only got around $100 million or ₹400 crore in season one of the men's IPL for the Mumbai Indians. So on its very debut, women's cricket hit ₹1,600 crore.” Modi said that while women's cricket still has a long journey ahead, its commercial growth trajectory is significantly faster than that of the men's IPL during its formative years. "Women's cricket is going to go to another level," Lalit Modi said. “What the men's IPL was 20 years ago, women's cricket has reached that level already. So on its very debut, women's cricket hit ₹1,600 crore.” According to Modi, it may take another 15 to 20 years for women's cricket to fully realise its global viewership potential. However, he believes it will eventually surpass many established sports leagues worldwide. Also Read: FIFA U-turn: Reusable water bottles no longer allowed at World Cup 2026 stadiums “You will see, unlike any other sporting league in the world, in any sport, that women's cricket will become number two in the world, and after IPL, men's cricket. And in terms of viewership, you will see that women's cricket will also, but it will take, I will tell you, take another 20 years. Okay, it has taken 18 years for the IPL to reach where it is today, with a $2 billion team. And women's cricket has just begun, but 15 years from now, Women's cricket will also be worth billions of dollars for each team. But it will be great for the game.” The growth of the WPL and India's recent success in women's cricket have further strengthened confidence in the future of the women's game. Reflecting on his tenure as BCCI Vice President in 2006, Modi recalled his role in integrating women's cricket into the national governing structure. "I was the one who introduced women to the constitution and the BCCI," Lalit Modi said. "We started to achieve that in my time alone when we started having women coming and women's cricket starting out there... I did not think the IPL ecosystem would be ready for a women's league for 10 or 12 years, but they have done it now, and they have achieved it." Modi also revisited his concerns regarding the financial sustainability of international cricket outside India. He reiterated his proposal to phase out bilateral ODIs and explore franchise-based Test cricket models to support struggling cricket boards. "I am saying that test matches in bilateral series will die. One Day should die. The test should survive. The test is a very important part. Unfortunately, it will die if it is not taken over by club cricket because there is no viewership on a global level. So it will be a loss leader. I am not saying everything has to make money. So you can...develop players for the T20. You do not have to have profit in everything. You have got to do something for the game too. So, as far as the BCCI is concerned, it is a non-profit organisation. But every other country has to make some money. If they do not make money, cricket will die. Sri Lankan cricket is crying. Pakistan is crying. They have no money. Bangladesh is crying. They have no money. If India does not go to New Zealand, they die. If you do not go to the West Indies, they die. If you do not go to South Africa, they die," he concluded.

Mr Adani paid ₹1,600 crore for a women's team (Gujarat Giants). Conversely, we only got around $100 million or ₹400 crore in season one of the men's IPL for the Mumbai Indians.

'Women's cricket teams will be worth billions of dollars in 15 years', says former IPL Chairman Lalit Modi

FIFA has reversed its previously announced policy and will no longer allow fans to bring reusable water bottles into stadiums during the 2026 FIFA World Cup across North America. Just three weeks ago, FIFA's official Stadium Code of Conduct explicitly allowed supporters to carry empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles with a capacity of up to one liter into venues. However, according to emails obtained by The Athletic, ticket holders have now been informed that the policy has changed. The communication said that ‘reusable water bottles are no longer permitted at the FIFA World Cup 2026 stadiums’. The updated Stadium Code of Conduct, revised on June 2, removed the earlier wording that permitted reusable bottles. It now clearly states: “For the avoidance of doubt, reusable water bottles may not be brought into the stadium.” The decision means fans will be unable to bring empty bottles into venues to refill at water fountains or hydration stations. Other types of bottles remain prohibited because they can pose a safety risk if thrown. The move is likely to spark criticism, particularly given concerns about extreme summer heat at several World Cup venues. During last year’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, bottled water inside stadiums reportedly cost between $4 and $6. While FIFA has not yet confirmed pricing for the 2026 tournament, Coca-Cola partner brand Dasani is expected to be the primary water supplier inside stadiums. Heat-related concerns have been a major issue ahead of the tournament. A report released in May by World Weather Attribution scientists suggested that approximately 26 of the tournament’s 104 matches could be played in conditions where the Wet Bulb Global Temperature (WBGT) exceeds 26°C (78.8°F). Five matches could potentially take place in conditions above 28°C (82.4°F).WBGT is a measurement that combines temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation to assess heat stress levels. The organization did not explain why the policy had changed since its earlier guidance. FIFA added: “Outside bottles are already prohibited at several of these venues for safety considerations, and FIFA is applying this consideration across its tournament stadiums. “FIFA works closely with each Host City Committee and local authorities on heat mitigation factors for fans traveling to the stadium, which can include resources such as misting stations, fans, hydration stations, cooling tents, and more around the stadium footprint. “Inside the stadium footprint, pricing for water bottles for the FIFA World Cup 2026 will remain consistent with other events held at each stadium.” Despite FIFA’s explanation, critics note that many of the same venues allowed fans to bring empty plastic bottles during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The Football Supporters’ Association also criticized the policy. A spokesperson told The Athletic: “Yet again with this World Cup, it is fans last and not fans first. The heat and humidity are a real concern for fans’ welfare; it should be this that is FIFA’s main focus and not the ability to sell more bottled water at inflated prices.” Several host cities are reportedly concerned about the decision, having invested significant resources into fan safety and heat-management strategies ahead of the tournament. However, FIFA retains authority over stadium regulations during World Cup matches. Cities expected to face greater heat-related challenges include Kansas City, Boston, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New York/New Jersey, where venues lack full roof coverage. To help players cope with high temperatures, FIFA has already introduced mandatory three-minute hydration breaks in each half and plans to deploy climate-controlled benches for coaches and substitutes at outdoor matches.

Indian swimming has never had more talent, better facilities, or stronger support systems. Yet the country continues to wait for its breakthrough moment on the world stage. That is the candid assessment of former Asian Games medallist and current national swimming coach Sandeep Sejwal, who believes India has the ingredients required for success but still lacks the ecosystem that consistently produces world-class swimmers. Speaking about India's position compared to global powers such as China, Australia, and the United States, Sejwal, who gives training at the Inspire Institute of Sport, admitted that the gap remains significant. However, he was quick to point out that the issue is not a shortage of talent. "We have the talent. We have the facilities. We have the mindset and the right people," Sejwal explained. The challenge, according to him, is experience and the absence of a system that exposes swimmers to elite competition from a young age. Unlike countries that regularly produce Olympic champions, Indian swimmers are still learning how to compete at the highest level. Sejwal believes that sustained exposure and long-term planning are essential if India wants to bridge that gap. One of his strongest observations was directed towards the sport's scheduling structure. He argued that annual planning is no longer enough and called for a four-year competition calendar that aligns with major international events such as the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Olympics. "Planning in March for a competition in June doesn't give athletes enough time to prepare," he said, stressing the importance of long-term athlete development. For now, Sejwal's immediate focus remains on veteran swimmer Sajjan Prakash, who is targeting both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. According to the coach, recent performances place Sajjan among the leading contenders in his event, with data suggesting he is currently ranked among the top swimmers in contention. While Sajjan has not bettered his personal best in several years, Sejwal remains optimistic. He revealed that the swimmer has steadily improved over the last year and believes a personal best could be within reach by the time the Commonwealth Games arrive. Also Read: Big blow for India! Virat Kohli ruled out of Afghanistan ODI series with hamstring injury: Report The biggest challenge is no longer speed but recovery. At 32, Sajjan cannot train the same way he did in his early twenties, when he routinely completed punishing training volumes and bounced back almost immediately. The coaching team is now experimenting with recovery strategies, including tailored nutrition plans, ice baths, stretching protocols, and massage therapies to ensure he can maintain peak performance during major competitions. Despite the physical challenges, Sejwal credits Sajjan's mental toughness as one of his greatest strengths. The swimmer continues to embrace difficult training sessions and remains fully committed to his final major championship cycle. Beyond Sajjan, Sejwal identified a rising star who could represent the future of Indian swimming: Tirthank Pegu. The youngster recently won silver at the Asian Youth Games and has rapidly improved his timings over the past year. Sejwal believes Pegu possesses physical abilities and could become one of India's next international success stories if he continues on his current trajectory. Interestingly, Sejwal believes today's generation of swimmers learns differently from previous generations. Rather than learning through observation, young athletes often learn through failure. International setbacks, he says, become valuable lessons that help shape future champions. The conversation also highlighted the role of the Inspire Institute of Sport, which Sejwal described as one of India's most important sporting ecosystems. While world-class facilities are important, he believes IIS's greatest strength lies in its coaching expertise and collaborative culture. At the campus, swimming coaches regularly exchange ideas with athletics, wrestling, and other sports programs, creating an environment where innovation and learning happen daily. For Sejwal, this culture of shared knowledge may ultimately be what helps India take the next step. The message from one of India's most respected swimming minds is clear: the country no longer needs to build talent. It needs to build a system capable of turning that talent into world-class results. And if that system finally comes together, Indian swimming's long-awaited breakthrough may not be far away.

Sandeep Sejwal opens up on Indian swimming's biggest challenges, Sajjan Prakash's Commonwealth Games medal hopes, rising star Tirthank Pegu, and the need for a long-term roadmap

Brazil's quest for World Cup glory got underway with a symbolic and emotional send-off in Rio de Janeiro on Monday (June 1). Before take-off from Galeao Airport, the Brazil national team’s aircraft was given a traditional aviation ‘baptism’ ceremony, a gesture often reserved for landmark flights and special occasions. As the team plane prepared to depart, two airport fire engines sprayed towering arcs of water over the aircraft, creating a tunnel through which it taxied before beginning its journey. The ceremony, commonly known in aviation circles as a water cannon salute, is viewed as a blessing for the aircraft and its passengers. The ritual is believed to christen the route ahead and bring good fortune to those on board. The symbolic farewell carries added significance for a nation that lives and breathes football. Brazil heads into the tournament hoping to add another chapter to its rich World Cup history under the leadership of Carlo Ancelotti. The squad departed for Newark, New Jersey, where preparations for the tournament will continue ahead of their opening fixtures. The team travelled aboard an Aeronexus Boeing 767-300ER adorned with CBF branding. The aircraft has a notable history, having been used by The Rolling Stones during their 60th-anniversary world tour in 2022. Among those on board was Neymar, whose fitness remains a major talking point heading into the competition. The Brazilian superstar is currently recovering from a calf injury suffered shortly after he was named in the national squad. Initial reports suggested the problem was minor, but subsequent assessments reportedly painted a more serious picture. The uncertainty surrounding Neymar's condition has reportedly led to private concerns among some members of the squad regarding the nature and severity of the injury. The forward was unable to participate fully when he first joined the national team camp and is now expected to miss Brazil's opening Group C clash against Morocco next weekend. Despite the injury setback, Neymar travelled with the squad as Brazil begins its final preparations for what it hopes will be a successful World Cup campaign. For now, the Seleção can only hope that the traditional blessing received on the runway proves to be the first positive omen of a memorable tournament journey.

Mumbai: In a major step towards strengthening sports infrastructure and promoting women’s participation in sports, the Maharashtra government is considering a state-wide uniform policy to ensure basic amenities and enhanced safety measures at sports grounds across the state. The move comes after concerns were raised during the 2026 Budget Session regarding the lack of adequate toilet facilities for women athletes at several sports venues. Acting on an assurance given in the legislature, a detailed review meeting was held on Tuesday with officials from various departments to assess the current situation and chart a roadmap for improvement. During the meeting, suggestions were made to develop a comprehensive policy for sports ground infrastructure, with a special focus on the needs of women athletes. Key proposals include the construction of model toilet facilities, installation of adequate lighting systems, creation of separate changing rooms, and deployment of CCTV cameras to enhance security at sports venues. Officials noted that women athletes from Maharashtra have consistently delivered outstanding performances at both national and international competitions. However, inadequate infrastructure at grassroots and district-level sports facilities often poses challenges for aspiring athletes, particularly women and girls. The government emphasised that providing a safe, dignified, and supportive environment is essential for encouraging greater participation in sports. Apart from physical infrastructure, discussions also highlighted the importance of quality coaching, nutritional support, financial assistance, access to training facilities, and social acceptance for the overall development of women athletes. Authorities believe that access to basic facilities such as clean toilets, changing rooms, and secure training environments can significantly improve participation rates and help athletes focus on performance without facing avoidable hardships. India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav could miss BCCI’s next selection meeting amid reports of the board sacking him from his position. India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav set to miss BCCI selection meeting amid sacking reports

Suryakumar Yadav’s time as Team India’s T20I captain seems to be up. After a horror IPL 2026 with the bat, SKY, who earlier became only the third Indian captain after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to lift a T20 World Cup, would be the topic of discussion when the BCCI selectors and the head coach Gautam Gambhir sit to pick the squad for the Ireland and England T20Is. At 35 and with an extended lean patch of runs, SKY’s exit looks imminent, with all stakeholders needing to pick his replacement and India’s new T20I captain. A few names popped up midway through the recently concluded IPL 2026, with the Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer leading the race. Although his team failed to reach the playoffs, Iyer’s captaincy style, batting form and history of working with Gambhir (at KKR) during their 2024 triumph campaign press his case as SKY’s replacement at number four in the T20Is. But is he an automatic choice? Perhaps not! Also read | The ‘Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Effect’: India-A tri-series to be broadcast live; here’s how to watch The latest report suggests that despite BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s vision of picking a team for the future, as he is often known for, head coach Gambhir could have his reservations. He has taken some tough calls with an eye on the future, and he, along with his panel, has a plan in place for the T20I captaincy and the way forward. That's the reason Shreyas was appointed vice-captain in ODIs and was in the squad for the last bilateral series India played before the T20 World Cup," the source revealed in a chat with the Times of India (TOI). "Now is he the coach's choice? Or he has someone else in mind? And will that someone be the selectors' choice? These are the important points of discussion. Axar Patel was the vice-captain for the World Cup; Ishan Kishan has age, form and leadership credentials, and then there is Sanju Samson's name doing the rounds. Samson has recency bias on his side, but his inconsistency has not pleased key stakeholders," the source added. Meanwhile, India’s next assignment is a home series against Afghanistan, starting with a one-off Test on June 6 in New Chandigarh, with the three ODIs to follow.

Who will replace SKY? Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and coach Gautam Gambhir are reportedly divided over India's next T20I captain as the Suryakumar era nears its end.

England Test captain Ben Stokes has defended Jofra Archer for his absence from the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s due to IPL commitments. Speaking to the media ahead of the series opener starting Thursday (Jun 4), Stokes warned that leading England players like Archer could be driven away from international cricket if the ECB attempts to limit their IPL commitments. Months after the Ashes embarrassment (1-4), England resumes Test cricket duties, with the home summer getting underway at the Home of Cricket in London. However, the hosts would be without Archer for the first Test, who was part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) squad, which was beaten by the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 2 in New Chandigarh. Currently in Barbados, the country of his birth, Archer’s availability for the second Test also remains uncertain. Also read | The ‘Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Effect’: India-A tri-series to be broadcast live; here’s how to watch Although New Zealand’s cricketer-turned-broadcaster Simon Doull called Archer’s absence (due to IPL commitments) ‘absolutely ludicrous’, Stokes commented on the same, saying that the top white-ball players could lose to Tests if they were to make themselves available for every match. "I totally understand people's frustrations around it, but there is another side to it," Stokes said.
