Japan floating village to house thousands of Asian Games athletes

Athletes at next year's Asian Games in Japan will stay on a "floating village" cruise ship and in converted shipping containers, an organising official told AFP, defending the cost-cutting move. The plan will see 4,600 athletes and officials housed on the ship for the duration of the Games, which are being held in Nagoya and the wider Aichi area from September 19 to October 4, 2026. Organisers will lease a luxury cruise liner that will be docked at Nagoya's port. Local organisers were keen to avoid the cost of building a traditional athletes' village, but Asian Olympic chiefs warned that any alternative must make sure athletes can meet and mingle together. French Open 2025: Djokovic downs Zverev to set up semi clash with Sinner

Novak Djokovic said beating Alexander Zverev on Wednesday was a "testament" to his ability to compete at the highest level as the 38-year-old reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros to inch closer to a record 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic fought past third seed Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in a grueling night session duel, which captivated Court Philippe Chatrier over three-and-a-quarter hours. Also read | French Open 2025: Sinner ends Bublik's dream run in straight sets to enter semis The 24-time Grand Slam winner moves on to face world number one Jannik Sinner in the last four, after the Italian earlier raced past the unseeded Alexander Bublik in straight sets. "Jannik is in tremendous form, and he has been the best player for the last couple of years," said Djokovic. "It's going to be of course semi-finals of a Grand Slam against the No. 1 in the world. There is no bigger occasion for me, so I'll try to do my best to step it up and perform as well as I did tonight. "I just hope that I will be able to physically keep up, you know, with Sinner in few days' time. It's a big challenge for me." On centre court, last year's runner-up Zverev roared out of the blocks with an immediate break of serve as he clinched the opener against Djokovic. It was the first time former world number one Djokovic has dropped a set at the French Open this year. ‘Forget the age’ Djokovic engineered himself a 3-1 lead in the second set after Zverev pushed a backhand long when serving at 30-40. The three-time Roland Garros champion then held firm through the rest of the frame to level the match as he started to punish the 1.98m-Zverev with drop-shots. The Serb sniffed out a break opportunity in game five of the third set and snaffled it, before again breaking the German as he took control of the encounter. Now on a high, Djokovic started the fourth by again pouncing on his opponent's usually reliable serve. He brought Chatrier to its feet when he whipped a cross-court forehand past Zverev to save break point in the sixth game at the end of an exchange that the 28-year-old looked certain to win on at least three occasions. Zverev appeared a defeated man when he eventually passed up that chance at a vital break-back with a netted forehand. Djokovic marched on and sealed his 101st win at the French Open, raising his arms aloft in triumph after finally converting match point at the fifth time of asking. "It was an amazing match," summarised Djokovic. "Obviously, beating one of the best players in the world on the biggest stages is something that I definitely work for, and I still, you know, push myself on a daily basis at this age because of these kind of matches and these kind of experiences. “It's a proven kind of testament to myself that I can and to others that I can still play on the highest level.” Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. In front of Vidhana Soudha, nearly one lakh people had gathered, but there were no incidents there. However, at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, there were casualties. No one, neither the Cricket Association nor the government, expected this, as the stadium has a seating capacity of about 35,000. We assumed only a slightly larger crowd would show up. But almost two to three lakh people gathered,” he explained. Most victims were young; compensation announced The Chief Minister said that most of those who died were young. Let us see the magisterial report. I will give 15 days for this report,” he said. Sinner has spent less than 10 hours on court through his first five matches as he has systematically taken apart his opponents for the loss of very few games.

Jannik Sinner booked himself a second consecutive semi-final appearance at Roland Garros on Wednesday with a typically ruthless straight-sets victory over unseeded Kazakh Alexander Bublik. The world number one cruised through his quarter-final match 6-1, 7-5, 6-0 in one hour and 49 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier, and is still yet to drop a set at the French Open this year. The 23-year-old will next face either 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic or third seed Alexander Zverev for a place in Sunday's final. "I just tried to stay focused on my side of the court, so tried to stay as solid as possible because he (Bublik) can have ups and downs," said Sinner. "I'm very happy with how I've arrived in the semi-finals, semi-finals in Grand Slams are very special." World number two Carlos Alcaraz said his last-eight dismantling of Tommy Paul on Tuesday was in part "inspired" by Sinner and his time-sensitive approach to tennis over the last fortnight. Sinner has spent less than 10 hours on court through his first five matches as he has systematically taken apart his opponents for the loss of very few games. "He (Sinner) inspired me in some ways just to give my 100 percent every match and I see how important it is just to play such a great level in the whole match, just to have more time then to recover after the match," Alcaraz told reporters after his 94-minute win. And the Italian showed centre court just what his rival meant by wrapping up the first set in just over half-an-hour. Bublik, ranked 62, managed to get a foothold in the second set as he matched Sinner game for game through the majority of the frame, but never managed to force a break point and really put pressure on the Italian. Bublik then presented Sinner with his chance to secure a 2-0 lead with a double-fault when serving at 30-40 in the 11th game. Not known for his propensity to look a gift horse in the mouth, Sinner closed out the second set by holding the next game to love. He started the third by making it back-to-back breaks on Bublik's serve, before racing through the rest of the set and clinching the match at the first time of asking with a cross-court forehand. Sinner now leads Bublik 4-1 in their match-ups, with his only defeat coming when he was forced to retire injured when trailing the 27-year-old at Halle two years ago. "We've played a couple of times before so I knew a little what to expect but with him you never know what's happening," added Sinner of his unconventional opponent. 'No crowd control measures': BJP Karnataka unit slams Congress government over RCB IPL trophy celebration stampede

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally managed to win an IPL trophy - first time in 18 years - and coach Andy Flower was full of praise for their new skipper Rajat Patidar. RCB had named Patidar their skipper following the IPL 2025 mega auction following Faf du Plessis' departure from the side."One of the most impressive things about what Rajat has done this year is, as an inexperienced captain, that he hasn't been affected by it," Flower said after the win."I don't think it has affected his batting because I've watched him really closely as a character, and he is still the lovely, gentle, polite Rajat Patidar that we knew last year. He hasn't changed at all in that regard," he added. Also Read - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/what-does-ee-sala-cup-namdu-mean-know-why-it-matters-to-ipl-2025-champions-rcb-1749022591122">What does 'Ee Sala Cup Namdu’ mean? "Manny has rested his body for four years. He's not a drinker. He's not a drug user. He's a family man that has taken care of himself. "He's a hard guy to dislike. But at the end of the day, you know it's kill or be killed."And I know if at any point he has me hurt, you know he's going to get me out of there. Addressing those concerns, Pacquiao noted that his family and loved ones were firmly behind his comeback. "I'm thankful for them for their concern," Pacquiao told AFP. "But the people who really concern me, is my family. My family saw how I move, saw how I train, saw my my body condition. They support me because they can see the old Pacquiao style." Pacquiao, who has reunited with veteran trainer Freddie Roach for next month's fight, is able to challenge immediately for a title due to a WBC rule that allows former champions to request a title fight when coming out of retirement. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman told AFP on Tuesday that Pacquiao had been cleared to return to the ring by the Nevada Athletic Commission after undergoing medical exams, describing the fighter's comeback as "low risk". "Manny Pacquiao is at no higher risk than any fighter going into the ring," Sulaiman said. "Manny has rested his body for four years. He's not a drinker. He's not a drug user. He's a family man that has taken care of himself. So of the different aspects of dangers, he's at the lowest risk." Pacquiao's opponent, Barrios, said he would set aside the Filipino's status as one of the most beloved fighters of his era. "There's nothing but good things to say about him outside the ring," Barrios said of Pacquiao. "He's a hard guy to dislike. But at the end of the day, you know it's kill or be killed. "And I know if at any point he has me hurt, you know he's going to get me out of there. So I just have to go in there and make sure that my hand is raised at the end of the fight." His eyes melted everyone hearts, he fell to the ground in tears of happiness just after Josh Hazlewood had bowled the last ball of the 20th over.&nbsp;“This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team,” Kohli was quoted saying to the broadcasters. “It’s been 18 long years. Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Punjab Kings by six runs to lift the IPL trophy

IPL 2025 | Given this team my youth, prime and experience, never thought this day would come: Virat Kohli

Nearly after a month Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket, he remains the biggest ambassador of Test cricket.&nbsp;&nbsp; While he has achieved more in white-ball formats, the white jersey will always hold a special place in his heart.&nbsp;Having retired from the longest format of the game last month, he still lauded Test cricket as the pinnacle of cricket, and that too after winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).&nbsp;Having finally lifted that elusive trophy, Kohli fell to the ground with tears in his eyes. He couldn’t control his emotions, having been waiting for this moment for 18 years. But when the time came to talk about it all, Kohli talked about Test cricket as much as he did about winning an IPL trophy for RCB.&nbsp;“You know, this moment is right up there with the best moments I’ve had in my career. But it still marks five levels under Test cricket. That’s how much I value Test cricket. And that’s how much I love Test cricket. So I would just urge the youngsters coming through to treat that format with respect,” Kohli said after winning the IPL 2025 trophy.&nbsp;Kohli always walked the talk. Apart from an injury or personal reason, he never missed a Test match. Under him, India became the best they have ever been in the format. A four-man pace attack developed under him and he won five Test matches. Kohli still thinks you can win IPL or the World Cup but it’ll be your accolades in Test cricket that will ultimately earn you the respect.&nbsp;“Because if you perform in Test cricket, you walk around anywhere in the world, people look you in the eye, shake your hand, and say, well done, you played the game really well. So if you want to earn respect in world cricket all over, take up Test cricket and give your heart and soul to it. And when you walk out with wonders on the other side, then you gain respect in the cricket world with legends like yourself. Melting our hearts on the field and off the field,” he signed off.
