India lost the second consecutive ODI of the three-match series on Thursday (Oct 23) in Adelaide as Australia took an unassailable lead in the series with one more match to go. Despite loss, one good thing came out of the match - Rohit Sharma scoring a fifty. The former Indian skipper was scratchy in his innings but managed to get 73 in the end on a pitch which was difficult for batters to start with. Shubman Gill, who replaced Rohit as ODI skipper ahead of the series, was full of praise for the veteran batter despite the series loss.
Gill on Rohit's scratchy 50 in Adelaide
“Never easy coming back and playing after a long time. The initial phase was challenging, but very pleased with how he batted. He fought well — I would say he missed out on a really big knock,” Gill said about Rohit after the match. South Africa reached the 68-run target for the loss of captain Aiden Markram (42) and Tristan Stubbs (nought), both to spinner Noman Ali, who finished with 2-40. Ryan Rickelton, who scored 25 not out, hit Sajid Khan for a six to seal an emphatic win minutes before the lunch break for the World Test Championship holders. In another battle of spinners, Pakistan managed 333 in their first innings before the South African tail wagged to help them pile up 404 for a crucial 71-run lead. Spinners took 34 of the 40 wickets to fall in the first Test in Lahore, which Pakistan won by 93 runs. Harmer torpedoed Pakistan's hopes of saving the Test when he trapped Babar Azam leg-before with the fifth ball of the day after the batsman had reached his 30th Test half-century. Pakistan's hopes had rested on Azam ending his century drought, having not scored a ton since December 2022. His lean spell goes on. Nine runs later, Harmer had Mohammad Rizwan caught by close-in fielder Tony de Zorzi for 18. In his next over, the spinner dismissed Noman for nought, caught behind for Harmer's 1,000 wicket in his 235th first-class match. Harmer is the fourth South African to take 1,000 or more first-class wickets, behind Mike Procter (1,417), Allan Donald (1,216) and Charlie Llewellyn (1013). Harmer's previous best figures of 4-51 came in the first Test in Lahore. Unlike South Africa, Pakistan's tail did not last long as they lost their last five wickets for just 33 runs in their second innings, just their latest batting slumps in the series. Shaheen Shah Afridi was run out without scoring, while Keshav Maharaj dismissed Salman Agha for 28 and Sajid Khan for 13 to swiftly wrap up the innings. Maharaj finished with 2-34 to follow up his 7-102 in the first innings. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Following the loss of four quick wickets, Axar and the tail helped India revive from a tricky situation and helped them cross the 250-run mark. IND vs AUS 2nd ODI: Virat Kohli’s rare duck fuels retirement rumours as netizens react to his 'hand gesture'

In what is a rarest of the rare occasions in Virat Kohli’s ODI career, the Indian batting great got out on a successive duck in the ongoing second One-Dayer against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday (Oct 23). Coming off his first zero in ODIs in Australia in the previous tie in Perth, Kohli looked confident to return to form at his favourite batting venue in Adelaide, only for him to get trapped in front of the wicket on a four-ball duck off Xavier Bartlett. Having removed captain Shubman Gill earlier on the first ball of the seventh over, Bartlett got the better of the batting king to put India’s back against the wall. WATCH VIDEO -

For the second time in this ODI series, Kohli walked out to bat inside the Powerplay following Gill’s dismissal. Looking to find form and rhythm after Perth duck, Kohli beautifully let go of the first few balls before missing out playing the one that hit him in front of the wickets, with Bartlett getting the big fish. Marsh’s top-notch captaincy did wonders for the hosts, who put the visiting Indian Team on the back foot right away. What made things worse for the Men in Blue was how clueless former captain Rohit Sharma looked in the middle, with Josh Hazlewood troubling him throughout the first ten overs. Although he survived a few close calls, including an LBW appeal earlier, Rohit managed to keep his wicket, unlike Gill and Kohli. Meanwhile, Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Adelaide Oval. Coming off a win in the rain-hit series opener at the Optus Stadium, the Aussies made three changes to their playing XI – bringing in Alex Carey for Josh Philippe, Bartlett for Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa for Matthew Kuhnemann. Gill, on the other hand, stuck to the same XI, with Kuldeep Yadav’s absence being the biggest talking point.

Kohli's rare failure with the bat in this format is bound to cast doubts over his international future.

Champions League: Liverpool return to winning ways as Chelsea, Real stand tall

Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the second ODI in Adelaide on Thursday (Oct 23). Captain Mitchell Marsh announced that the hosts have made several changes to their winning XI from the previous game, bringing in Alex Carey for Josh Philippe and Xavier Bartlett for Nathan Ellis. Adam Zampa also returns to the side for this tie, having missed out on the Perth game to be with his pregnant wife. On the other hand, losing captain Shubman Gill made no changes to the Indian Team for this do-or-die match. Here are the two teams for the Adelaide ODI – India - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill(c), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul(w), Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj Australia - Mitchell Marsh(c), Travis Head, Matthew Short, Matt Renshaw, Alex Carey(w), Cooper Connolly, Mitchell Owen, Xavier Bartlett, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood Speaking at the toss, Marsh said, "The weather played havoc in Perth, but the way we stuck at it was really pleasing in. The pitch is great here. Hopefully, a big crowd. An awesome opportunity to win the series. Alex Carey comes in for Josh Philippe, and Xavier Bartlett comes in for Nathan Ellis, who is resting." Gill, however, sounded confident of his playing XI but admitted wanting to bowl first had he won the toss. "Looks like a good surface. We would have bowled as well, as the pitch has been under cover for a couple of days. We're expecting a little bit initially, but happy to bat first. We're going with the same team,” Gill said. Meanwhile, all eyeballs will be on the star pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom got out cheaply in the first ODI at the Optus Stadium. Kohli, who got out on his first duck in One-Dayers Down Under, will aim to bounce back with some runs on his back at his favourite venue in Australia. Gill and Iyer will also aim to make the most of the playing conditions at the Adelaide Oval, with an inexperienced middle and lower order remaining wary of the daunting Aussie bowling attack. For India, Kuldeep Yadav’s absence remains the biggest talking point, with Harshit Rana retaining his place in the XI.
