Carlos Alcaraz moves step closer to defending Wimbledon crown after edging Daniil Medvedev in semis
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz has moved a step closer to defending the Wimbledon crown after getting the better of Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal on Friday (July 12). Playing in the repeat of last year’s semifinal, Alcaraz beat Medvedev 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to book a place in the final of the Wimbledon Championships. He could likely face Novak Djokovic in the showdown clash on Sunday which could be a repeat of last year’s final if the Serbian gets the better of his opponent in the second semifinal.
Alcaraz moves step closer to title defence
Having beaten Medvedev in last year’s semis, the confidence was high for the Spaniard but he was quickly pulled down to Earth. He lost his serve early in the first set and faced total domination from the Russian counterpart, even serving to stay in the set. However, Alcaraz did enough to take the opening set into a tiebreak but was outclassed having won only one point.
However, there was no real issue for the 21-year-old as he then started dominance while capitalising on every break of serve. He would break his opponent once and hold his serve on each of the next three consecutive sets. The defending champions had no issues in winning the three consequent sets and pocket the Wimbledon semis for the second consecutive year.

So far at Wimbledon 2024, Alcaraz has dropped five sets on his run to the final and could have a stern test in defending his crown. He will face the winners of Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti who willcollide in the second semifinal.
Spain looking forward to Super Sunday
While Alcaraz battles for the Wimbledon title on Sunday representing Spain in London, their national football team will also have a big day when they face England in the final of the Euro 2024. The final in Berlin will start late in the evening, probably after Alcaraz’s final at Wimbledon is over. If both emerge victorious it could be a double joy for Spain in sports.
