T20 WC: Sandeep Lamichhane joins Nepal squad in Caribbean despite US visa row
Star Nepalese spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has arrived in the Caribbean for his side’s remaining two 2024 T20 World Cup matches, he announced in a social media post. Lamichhane was denied the USA visa earlier despite his country’s Government, Sports Ministry and Nepal Cricket Board coming to his assistance. However, with Nepal not playing any matches in the US, Sandeep flew to the Caribbean to reconnect with the team and realise his dream of playing in the T20 World Cup.
The former Nepal captain faced an eight-year prison term before it was overturned on appeal ahead of the 20-team-tournament in the Americas.
Sandeep missed two matches for Nepal against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka but will remain available for selection for the South Africa and Bangladesh games at Kingstown, St Vincent.
Though his name was not mentioned in the publicly announced squad, it is believed that it was included in the final 15 submitted to the ICC before the deadline. The ICC and Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) listed the travelling reserve Pratish GC in the 15 instead.

Lamichhane arrived in the Caribbeandespite not having played any competitive cricket since last year; however, per the latest reports, the seasoned campaigner has been training at Kathmandu's TU Ground since receiving clearance from the court.
"I would like to thank the Government of Nepal, Foreign Ministry, Sports Ministry, National Sports Council and Cricket Association of Nepal for their support to help get me a US visa but unfortunately it did not work out this time,” Lamichhane wrote in a social media post.
“I am now joining the National team for the last two matches in the West Indies and look forward to fulfilling my dreams and the dream of all cricket lovers,” the leg spinner continued.
The CAN also confirmed his availability for selection in a statement,
"Nepal player Sandeep Lamichhane will leave for the West Indies to join the Nepal team for the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Following the decision of the honourable Patan High Court on May 15th, CAN decided to keep young bowler Pratish Ji as a travelling reserve and include Lamichhane in the 15-member list submitted to the ICC.
"We sincerely hope all Nepali cricket supporters will unite and cheer for the Nepal team in this grand festival of cricket in which Nepal is participating for the first time in ten years,” the statement read.
