Paris Paralympics 2024: India's Praveen Kumar wins gold medal in Men's High Jump - T64 event

India has officially bettered their Paralympics performance having clinched their sixth gold medal on Friday (Sep 6). India’s Praveen Kumar won the gold medal in the Men's High Jump - T64 event meaning India now has one more gold medal in Paris than they had at their previous best in Tokyo. Praveen with an attempt of 2.08 metreswon the gold as India now looks to set a new benchmark at the Paris Paralympics Games.

Praveen takes gold for India

On Day 9 of the Paris Para Games, all eyes were on Praveen. The Indian para-athlete did not disappoint and won gold with a 2.08-metrejump on the second attempt. He started the round with jumps of 2.00m and 2.03 m, followed by 2.06m, before going for his best shot. He had earlier jumped 1.93m at one stage but made sure he held on to the gold medal once he got jumps above 2 metres.

As a result of his gold medal, Praveen joins Avani Lekhara, Kumar Nitesh, Sumit Antil, Harvinder Singh and Dharambir Nain to win the top prize at the Paris Para Games. This is also India’s third gold medal in athletics in the ongoing quadrennial Games. Archery, badminton and shooting remain the other disciplines where India has successfully won gold.

India registers best Para Games performance

With the addition of two more gold medals and a silver on late Wednesday, India had already registered its best Para performance in a single edition. However, Praveen’s gold medal means India has now outright registered its best performance having surpassed the five-gold medal tally from Tokyo Games. At the time of writing, India has six gold, nine silver and 11 bronze medals. The total of 26 medals is also India’s best run at a single Paralympic Games.
