Unseeded Marco Cecchinato defeated 12-times major winner Novak Djokovic 6-3, 7-6(4), 1-6, 7-6(11) at the French Open on Tuesday to set up the semi-final clash with Dominic Thiem.
Although, Cecchinato suffered neck pain in the opening set but cruised through successfully and became the first Italian man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in 40 years.
The last Italian man to take part in a major semi-final was Corrado Barazzutti at the 1978 French Open.
Semi-finalist Cecchinato broke down in tears after the match and said, "Am I dreaming? Maybe I'm sleeping? I don't understand nothing."
The defeat was almost like a shock to the former champion and 12-time winner Djokovic.
According to some media reports, the Serb was "super angry" while interacting with media and said, "I don't know if I'm going to play on the grass."
