Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris assures QB Kirk Cousins after shock pick in 2024 draft

Atlanta Falcons' new head coach Raheem Morris has assured quarterback Kirk Cousins of his position in the upcoming season as the number one quarterback of the team. The comments came after the Falcons picked quarterback Michael Penix Jr. as eighth overall pick in the NFL Draft 2024, sending shockwaves to the football world.
Speaking at the franchise's post-draft press-conference, Morris, who replaced Arthur Smith in January earlier this year, said: "We came up with a decision, this is what we plan to do. And Kirk does not have to look over his shoulder every time he throws a bad pass. Like, that is not the case."

"So, I know I'm going to have to tell you guys once or twice that that is not the case. Like, we are here to go win, and we are here to go win it all. We are here to win as much as we can win," he added.
Cousins was roped in by the Falcons last month in free agency in a four-year, $180 million deal with $100 million in guarantees. The QB's agent, however, told ESPN after the Falcons picked Penix Jr. that the decision left Cousins shocked and confusing.
“Yes, it was a big surprise. We had no idea this was coming. The truth is the whole league had no idea this was coming. We got no heads up. Kirk got a call from the Falcons when they were on the clock. That was the first we heard. It never came up in any conversation,” Cousins' agent Mike McCartney had said.

The Falcons head coach said that 'he'd hate it to be the story of the draft' and added: "I know it will be. That's just how our world is based and is driven, but I can't say it's annoying. No. Because it's what people want to see; it's piqued more interest. What's [Travis] Kelce's girlfriend's name? I feel like her right now. I'm Taylor Swift and Terry is Kelce, I guess."
