On Thursday (March 21), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) dropped a bomb by revealing that MS Dhoni has stepped down as the captain of the team. Ruturaj Gaikwad was named his successor and the young batter even attended the captains' photo shoot ahead of the season-opener, where CSK meet host Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Chennai on Friday evening (March 22).
'There wasn’t a dry eye in the dressing room. Everyone was moved'
Chennai head coach Stephen Fleming recalled the moment when Dhoni announced his decision with the team management. Before the season-opener, Fleming said at a press conference, "(When Dhoni broke the news) there was a lot of emotions. A whole lot of tears. There wasn’t a dry eye in the dressing room. Everyone was moved. Last time (when CSK changed the captain before IPL 2022) we weren’t as prepared for MS to move and for a change in leadership."
He added, "There was also a round of congratulations to Ruturaj. He isn’t the most vocal person, but he has qualities to lead us in the right direction."
As per reports,Dhoni would be playing his last season in IPL 2024. Thus, Gaikwad will have Dhoni's presence in the playing XI and the latter will aim to groom his successor before stepping away totally.
