India fell 51 runs to South Africa in the 2nd T20I as early wickets and lack of support for Tilak Varma hampered the chase, while De Kock’s 90 powered SA to 213.
India crashed to a 51-run defeat in the second T20I against South Africa on Thursday (Dec 11) at the New Chandigarh stadium. The chase fell apart early when Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were removed inside four overs. Tilak Varma fought with a strong fifty, but no one stayed long enough with him. India kept losing wickets, and the required rate kept shooting up. Meanwhile, South Africa’s 213 came on the back of Quinton de Kock’s sharp 90 off 46, with Aiden Markram, David Miller, and Donovan Ferreira chipping in at the right moments to keep the innings moving.
India’s batting never really got going after the early blows. Gill looked positive in his brief stay, but he could not convert it into a big score. Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav failed to make an impact, leaving the team under pressure from the very start. Tilak Varma tried to anchor the innings and played some brilliant shots, scoring a well-made fifty. However, he lacked support from the other end, which made it difficult for India to chase down the target.

The required run rate kept rising steadily as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Every time Varma looked set to take the game close, another wicket fell, keeping India on the back foot. The middle and lower order could not handle the pressure, and South Africa’s bowlers executed their plans perfectly. With disciplined bowling and clever field placements, they kept the Indian batsmen under control and prevented any significant partnerships from forming.
On the other hand, South Africa’s innings was powered by Quinton de Kock, who played a fast and aggressive knock. His 90 runs off just 46 balls set a strong foundation. Aiden Markram, David Miller, and Donovan Ferreira added valuable contributions at crucial times to push the total past 210. Their combined efforts made it tough for India to keep up with the asking rate.
In the end, India’s chase fell short by 51 runs, leaving plenty of lessons for the team ahead of the series decider. The performance highlighted the need for better starts from the top order and more support for key players like Tilak Varma to build a challenging total or chase high scores successfully.
