Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has named a surprise left-hander as Kohli’s replacement at number three in the One-Dayers; it’s neither Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, nor even Devdutt Padikkal, who emerged as a Test star recently. For what Kohli has achieved batting at that position in the 50-over format, he has cemented his place amongst the greatest ODI batters of all time, let alone from India. His numbers put him only second to the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, while Kohli has surpassed him in the number of ODI hundreds. Considering there is plenty of ODI cricket scheduled before the showpiece event gets underway on October 2, 2027, in Africa, Kohli could inch closer to breaking Sachin’s run tally. Jaffer has brought up T20I mainstay Tilak Varma’s name as Kohli’s potential replacement at number three. Having tasted immense success in the shortest format with one T20 World Cup title to his name, Tilak has shown quality even batting up the order. Also read| ‘Dhoni told me you always…’: Shai Hope credits MS Dhoni for Chandigarh run chase masterclass Pressing his case ahead of the regulars in the ODIs, Jaffer, on his YouTube Channel, said, “It feels great to see his versatility. He previously scored a century at No. 3, and now he has adapted to the No. 5 and No. 6 positions so beautifully. This is an amazing quality.” Explaining his decision behind not picking Jaiswal as Kohli’s potential replacement, Jaffer said, “It’s about time. When Virat and Rohit leave, Rohit, obviously, is a top-order batter, and Yashasvi Jaiswal is there to replace him, but I feel there will be a left-handed batter in Virat’s place. He has that game; we saw the way he scored runs in the Duleep Trophy. His first-class average is around 55. So, he can fit into all three formats pretty easily.” Meanwhile, Tilak has limited experience leading up to the 50-over World Cup, having played five ODIs. He has batted twice at number three, and once each at number four and five, scoring 68 runs at an average of 22.67. Tilak’s last ODI appearance came against South Africa in December 2025.

Tilak Varma's masterclass drives South Zone into Duleep Trophy final

Indian batter Tilak Varma has defended his batting approach during India’s T20I tours of Ireland and England, saying his strike rate was influenced by match situations rather than his personal style. Tilak said his only focus is to do what the team needs, whether it is attacking from the very first ball or playing a steady innings, he believes the situation should decide his approach. The 23-year-old pointed out that India often lost four or five wickets inside the first 10 overs on both tours, making it important for him to stabilise the innings instead of taking unnecessary risks. He also said he accepts the responsibilities given to him by the team management and adjusts his game accordingly. Although Tilak scored useful runs on the tours, he was criticised for not increasing the scoring rate quickly enough and for slowing the team’s momentum. “In this game, you have to bat in different places and especially in such conditions, it’s not easy. At the same time, I always say that I do whatever is required for the team. If I have to grind it out and play for the team, I do. If I have to hit from ball number one, then I do that. So at that time, in the conditions of the team, if you look at it, from Ireland to England, you always had four to five wickets falling inside the powerplay or the first 10 overs,” Tilak told reporters in the pre-match press conference. “So going there and then getting out in trying to accelerate, it doesn’t make sense. So that’s what I always have in my mind, that I can go and hit the first ball. But at the same time, I’m playing for the country, so there are a lot of responsibilities. So what are the conditions of the team? If I have to play for the team till the end, our team’s plans keep changing. When you are the vice-captain, the team gives you something after thinking about it. So I want to take the same responsibilities that the management gives me, so I’m playing according to that,” he added. Also Read - Zinedine Zidane set to take over as France head coach Tilak registered two half-centuries during the Ireland and England tours, one against Ireland and another against England. T20 WC 2026 | India opener Abhishek Sharma discharged from hospital, will he play vs Namibia - Here's what Tilak Varma said

Tilak Varma is back and back with a bang. Team India’s T20I batting mainstay returned to competitive cricket for the first time since the first week of January, when he underwent testicular surgery, keeping him out of the recently concluded New Zealand T20Is. Picked in India-A squad for the scheduled warm-up matches against the USA and Namibia, one of which took place in Navi Mumbai on Monday (Feb 2), Varma scored a gritty 24-ball 38 in the first innings and returned with one wicket in two overs, helping his team beat America by 38 runs. Batting first, India-A got off to a flyer, with keeper-batter Narayan Jagadeesan and Priyansh Arya adding 43 for the first wicket inside four overs. Varma joined Tamil Nadu gloveman in the middle, stitching 113 runs for the second wicket. Also read | T20 World Cup 2026 | No place for Kuldeep: India skipper Suryakumar all but confirms bowling line-up While the right-handed Jagadeesan was the architect in this partnership, closing in on his T20 hundred, which he completed soon after (104 off 55 balls), Varma impressed during his brief stay, hitting two sixes and three fours. Captain Ayush Badoni walked in next (following Tilak’s dismissal) and, with Jagadeesan, slammed 73 runs in just 29 balls, out of which he scored an unbeaten 60 off just 26 deliveries, whacking four maximums and six fours. India-A scored 238 for three in 20 overs.
USA’s run chase
The USA's opening stand added 32 for the first wicket before another quick scalp put them on the backfoot. USA’s run chase The USA's opening stand added 32 for the first wicket before another quick scalp put them on the backfoot.
