A junior Indian minister Wednesday (Dec 18) informed the country’s parliament that the government had banned 18 OTT platforms this year for publishing obscene and vulgar content. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan told Lok Sabha, the lower house of the parliament, that these 18 OTT platforms were blocked in March.

"The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken action in coordination with various intermediaries, and blocked 18 OTT platforms on 14th March 2024 for publishing obscene, vulgar, and, in some instances, pornographic content under these provisions," the minister said.

Murugan was responding to a question asked by Shiv Sena-UBT Member of Parliament Anil Desai. He cited the IT Rules of 2021 while saying that the OTT platforms, also referred to as intermediaries, were obliged to make reasonable efforts by themselves against displaying or spreading obscene or pornographic content.

He added that the rules also empowered the central government to order any government agency or an intermediary to censor content in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognisable offence relating to such matters.

The minister further added that “significant” Social Media Intermediaries are also required to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer to ensure compliance with the Act and rules made thereunder.

The 70-year-old farmer leader has been on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border point between Punjab and Haryana since November 26.
The court further said that there would be serious repercussions if something untoward happened to him.

“He needs to be healthy to agitate… As an elected government and a constitutional organ, you would not like to invite the blame that something happened to him… Even farmers should be concerned about saving their life. He’s their leader! You tell us something tomorrow. Do something swiftly,” a Bench led by Justice Surya Kant told the central and state governments. 
This comes as the Punjab government pointed out that Dallewal has refused medical treatment despite his health deteriorating and has vowed to sacrifice his life for farmers' rights. 
The court stressed that Dallewal is a leader of the farmers, and no leniency can be shown in such a situation. 
"He's (Mr Dallewal) their leader. The farmers should also be concerned about his health... You tell us something tomorrow. Do something swiftly," he added.

Pandher said, “Around 50 farmer labourers commit suicide every day. In 2022, farmers lost Rs 15 lakh crore, and in 2023, they lost Rs 8.5 lakh crore due to the lack of MSP.”

India farmers' protest: 'Rail roko' agitation in Punjab disrupts train services, travellers face inconvenience

A passenger ferry with over 110 people capsized on Wednesday (Dec 18) near the Gateway of India in Mumbai, the police said. 13 people, including 10 passengers and three Navy personnel, lost their lives, said Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. 
Meanwhile, two others are critically injured. Around 101 people have been safely rescued by the authorities. 
The Neelkamal ferry was on way to Elephanta Islands when the speed boat circled it before crashing into it. 
The ferry had over 110 people on board, while the naval boat had six individuals, including two Navy personnel and four staff members, according to the reports. 
The search operation is being conducted by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships. 
The videos of the incident soon went viral, showing ongoing rescue operations.

"We are in constant touch with the district and police administration, and fortunately, most of the passengers have been rescued. However, rescue operations are still ongoing. Orders have been given to the district administration to deploy all necessary resources for the operation," he added. 
He added that according to the preliminary information, five to seven people are still missing. "I will make a statement in the House as soon as I receive more detailed information."

According to the user, his friend purchased food from the restaurant and noticed the message about Atul Subhash printed at the bottom of the bill. People have been paying tributes through social media posts and candlelight vigils for the man who lost his life.
“We deeply mourn the suicide of the techie Atul Subhash. His life was just as important as everyone else’s. RIP brother. We hope you finally found peace on the other side,” the message read.

The report also said that though the front-line forces of both India and China pulled back from the region, satellite images from recent years have shown stepped-up Chinese construction activity around Doklam.
Citing a recent report by research associate Robert Barnett, the Indian newspaper said that since 2016, when China first built a village in territory understood to be part of Bhutan, Beijing has completed 22 villages and settlements consisting of an estimated 2,284 residential units and relocated almost 7,000 people to previously unpopulated areas of Bhutan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (Dec 18) responded to the opposition criticising Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks on Dalit icon Dr BR Ambedkar.

In a series of posts on X, Prime Minister Modi said that in Parliament, Amit Shah exposed the Congress' dark history of insulting Dr Ambedkar and ignoring the scheduled castes (SCs) and the scheduled tribes (STs). 
"They are clearly stung and stunned by the facts he presented, which is why they are now indulging in theatrics! Sadly, for them, people know the truth!" Modi said.
He added that the central government has worked tirelessly to fulfil the vision of Ambedkar over the last decade.

"If the Congress and its rotten ecosystem think their malicious lies can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insult towards Dr Ambedkar, they are gravely mistaken!" the prime minister further said. 
He also mentioned the "list of the Congress' sins towards Ambedkar" which included getting him defeated in elections not once but twice; Pandit Nehru campaigning against him and making his loss a prestige issue; denying him (Ambedkar) a Bharat Ratna; and denying his portrait a place of pride in the Central Hall of Parliament.
"Congress can try as they want, but they can’t deny that the worst massacres against SC/ST communities have happened under their regimes. For years, they sat in power but did nothing substantive to empower the SC and ST communities," Modi said. 
<h2>Cong demands Amit Shah's resignation</h2>
Earlier in the day, opposition lawmakers in Parliament, including Lok Sabha's leader of opposition (LoP) and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, held a protest against Shah's remarks on Ambedkar.

On Wednesday, Union Home Minister Shah responded to the opposition criticism by lashing out at the Congress party. Addressing a press conference, Shah said that the Congress had been presenting facts about his speech in the Rajya Sabha in a distorted manner.

'Congress is anti-Ambedkar': Amit Shah responds to Oppn criticism of his remarks on Dalit icon

The director of a school in Noida city of Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was arrested for allegedly installing a spy camera in the bulb socket of the washroom which was used by teachers. 
Through the camera, the director was watching live footage of the people who were entering the washroom using mobile phones and computers.
A teacher discovered the spy camera and alerted the police about it. The incident took place at Learn with Fun play school located in Sector 70 of Noida.
On December 10, the teacher felt that there was something unusual in the bulb holder and saw a faint light coming from it which aroused her suspicion. 
After examining it closely, she found that there was a hidden spy camera installed in the bulb holder. The teacher informed the security guard about it after which he confirmed about the presence of the device.

Subsequently, the teacher reported the issue to school director Navnish Sahay as well as the school's co-ordinator Parul who denied the charges. 
As per the teacher, no action was taken by either Sahay or Parul. After the teacher filed a complaint, an investigation was launched by Noida Central Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shakti Mohan Awasthi who registered the case. 
In the investigation, the police confirmed that the spy camera was operational and was able to live-stream footage without recording the visuals. The police later arrested director Navnish Sahay. 
<h2>School director admits to committing the crime </h2>
According to the police, Sahay admitted to the crimes amid the interrogation and said that he had bought the spy camera from an online platforms for Rs 22,000 (approx. $259). 
The makers of the spy camera have specifically designed it for concealing it inside a bulb holder and make it almost undetectable without close scrutiny.

Reportedly, Sahay used the camera to live stream the footage from the washroom of teachers directly to his personal devices.
The teacher had further alleged that a similar incident had taken place earlier when a spy camera was found in the toilet of the school and was submitted to co-ordinator Parul. However, she did not take any action at that time.
The accused director has been running the school for the last six months. As per the police, the man was arrested by the Phase 3 police team of Ghaziabad. Meanwhile, the operation of the school has been suspended as investigation is underway.

Hence, the applicant does not deserve bail. It is clear that the Hon'ble High Court has meticulously considered the applicant's role and declined the relief sought by him," the special judge observed in the order passed on May 28, 2024.
The court further noted that since the High Court had already dismissed the applicant's criminal appeal on October 18, 2022, and the applicant subsequently withdrew his petition before the Supreme Court, the order of this court dated March 24, 2022, has attained finality. Therefore, the court cannot reassess the facts of the case or grant the relief requested by the applicant.

Delhi court grants interim bail to Umar Khalid in 2020 riots case

The Delhi Police arrested four fake police officers for accusing college students of running a fake call centre and conducting a fake raid at their houses in West Delhi in which they confiscated Rs1.55 lakh (approx. $1,825) in cash and made them sit like roosters. 
All the accused, Manpreet Singh, 29, Junaid Wasid, 23, Kuldeep Singh, 22, and Sarabjeet Singh alias Prince, 22, were arrested by the police on Tuesday (Dec 17). 
All of them are residents of West Delhi and have been booked under charges of robbery with an attempt to cause grievous hurt or death.
The fake raid continued at the flat of the students for four hours on December 10. The imposters made the victims sit like roosters, took their photographs holding a gun and asked them to lock themselves in their own houses.

The victims, identified as Kunj Salve, Mohammad Areebul Hasan, Aditya Kumar Verma, Lovpreet Singh, Aditya Vaswani, and Sujanya Gupta, were students of Delhi University and were not involved in the call centre scam, said the police.
<h2>Here's what happened</h2>
In his complaint, Salve said that three men approached him and Vaswani at 9.30 pm (local time) on December 10 and claimed that they had video evidence which proved their involvement in a fake call centre.
The police officer said that the trio identified themselves as police staff and were later joined by an associate. 
Even though the students showed their college IDs and denied any wrongdoing, the mobile phones were forcibly confiscated by the four men and the students were brought to their flat to carry out searches.

All six students were then cornered by the accused and assaulted and their phones and laptops were seized. 
“After assaulting the students, the imposters demanded Rs25 lakh (approx $29440) as a bribe for not filing any case against them or arresting them. When the students refused to have any money, the accused threatened them with a gun and collected around Rs23,000 (approx. $270) cash before taking away their debit cards and details from which they withdrew around Rs1.32 lakh (approx. $1554),” said a police officer.
Police were able to reach out to the accused by tracking their phone numbers. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vichitra Veer said that they have recovered Rs 1 lakh (approx. $1177) of the stolen money, the car used in the crime and the pistol. 
“We identified all suspects through technical and manual investigation and arrested them. Efforts are being made to nab the person from whom the accused had procured the firearm," he said.

Cold wave leads to freezing of key water bodies in India's Jammu & Kashmir

Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections in February next year, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal announced on Wednesday (Dec 18) that all people above 60 years of age will receive free treatment at all government and private hospitals as a part of ‘Sanjeevani Yojana’ if AAP retains power in the national capital. 
The former chief minister said that the registration process for the scheme will begin in the next two to three days during an event at the party headquarters. Last week, the Delhi High Court questioned the AAP government as to why the centrally sponsored Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) had not been implemented in Delhi, while it has already been implemented in the rest of the states and union territories.
The Ayushman Bharat scheme offers healthcare benefits to individuals with a coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh to protect them from the high cost of treatment in secondary and tertiary hospitals. The scheme covers both public and private hospitals that are empanelled.

However, Delhi health minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said that the scheme was not sufficient when compared to the AAP government’s free healthcare model for the poor, as it required the underprivileged to pay for treatments that exceeded the limit of Rs 5 lakh.
Bhardwaj also suggested that the central scheme was not meeting the needs of the underprivileged and claimed that half of the patients from BJP-ruled states were being treated in Delhi’s government hospitals.

The then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had made a global tour to form an international consensus on the issue. Indian diplomats worked to expose the scale of the crisis, including reports of genocide, to garner international backing or at least neutrality.

<h2>Charges against the two men</h2>
Jaspreet Singh, identified as an important on-ground operative for Landa and his associate Pattu Khaira, was allegedly involved in drug smuggling and extortion activities aimed at generating funds for the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). 
Baljeet Singh, meanwhile, is accused of manufacturing weapons and supplying them to members of Landa's gang and other gangsters. The NIA alleged that he used social media to coordinate the arms supply.
"Baljeet was manufacturing weapons locally and using social media to supply them to operatives of the Landa gang. Baljeet was one of the various weapons suppliers with whom the terrorists had tied up across the country for supply of arms and ammunition," read the NIA statement.

Indian finance minister Sitharaman said that the total assets worth Rs 22,280 crore have been recovered and returned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to public and private banks and deceived investors. In Lok Sabha's discussion over Supplementary Demands for Grants, Sitharaman called up the ED's work opening, blaming no one and saying, “We haven’t spared anyone, even those who fled the country. The ED has worked to ensure that money rightfully belonging to banks and investors is recovered and returned.”
<h2>Major asset recoveries by the ED</h2>
Among the high-profile cases, the ED has seized assets worth:
