Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s capital, Srinagar City, is counted among the most creative cities in the world, and the artisans of the valley have been working day and night to keep its art and craft alive. But some of the arts are dying slowly as the young people are not ready to take up the craft as a profession. One such craft is the walnut wood carving.
Centuries-old walnut wood carving craft has given the industry some national award-winning artisans, but over time, the younger generation has shown very little interest in the craft, leading to a major decline of the wood carving industry.

The artisans say that youngsters get scared when they see the work of award-winning artisans, as they think that they might never be able to learn it. But these artisans want the younger generation to learn wood carving and preserve the craft.

&ldquo;I have been doing wood carving since childhood. Since then, the number of people working in this field has been dwindling. Today only a tiny percentage of craftsmen are engaged in this craft. The work is very slow, nothing sells anymore. Many have left it, but I am still doing it. There was a lot of poverty in the crafts business even during my childhood, but now it has become worse,&rdquo; said Nazir Ahmad Bhat, a wood carving artisan.
The artisans from the Kashmir Valley have been selling their wood carvings to people from across the world. The local wood carving artisans are considered the best in walnut woodwork and have never compromised with the quality of their work. The national and international market for the craft has been shrinking in recent years.

&ldquo;Earlier exports used to happen, things were going well for some time, but it has slowed down. I joined my father thinking I would take his art forward, but now I am not sure if I can,&rdquo; said Bilal Ahmad, a wood carving artisan.
Experts in the Valley say that both the artisans and the material are shrinking. Those who are masters of the art are phasing away without creating artisans of calibre besides the dearth of material.

&ldquo;What makes Kashmiri wood carving important is the craft and skill level of the artisans, as well as the material. So, one of the issues is the slowly dying craft level with the demise of masters, craft persons. That&rsquo;s a major issue as we don&rsquo;t have replacements for the master craftsmen who are sadly dying down,&rdquo; said Sameer Hamdani, a conservationist.
Only the government can help these artisans preserve the dying wood carving art of Kashmir, he added.

2. The new bill puts the onus on the carrier to remove a foreigner who was refused to enter the country, as mentioned in the bill circulated among MPs on Tuesday (Feb 11).&nbsp;
3. The bill further directs universities and educational institutions to submit the details of any foreigner it admits to the Registration Officers. The same implies to hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical institutes.&nbsp;
4. The new bill also repeals The Passport Act 1920, The Registration of Foreigners Act 1939, The Foreigners Act 1946, and The Immigration (Carriers&rsquo; Liability) Act, 2000.&nbsp;

The Statement of Objects and Reasons of the new bill said, "While there is an underlying continuity and commonality of objectives among the four Acts, there are some overlapping provisions among the said Acts."&nbsp;
It further explained the "necessity" to repeal the four Acts and enact a new "comprehensive" legislation.&nbsp;
"The proposed legislation is being enacted to avoid multiplicity and overlapping of laws on the same or related subject and to comply with the Government of India&rsquo;s policy of simplification of laws," the statement said.&nbsp;

6. The new bill says that any person entering India without a valid passport or visa, along with other travel documents, will have to face a jail term of two to five years or a fine up to ₹20 lakh.&nbsp;

The complainant has alleged that Gandhi's statements were derogatory and defamed the Indian Army, the lawyer said.

FCPA law prohibits the bribing of foreign governments, political parties and others to secure business. This comes as half a dozen US Congressmen wrote to the new Attorney General against "questionable" decisions made by the US Department of Justice (DoJ). They said that Adani Group's indictment in the alleged bribery scam, "jeopardises the relationship with close ally India".

New Income Tax bill to be introduced in Parliament tomorrow

A court in India has ruled recently that unnatural sex between a man and his wife is not an offence of rape, even if it took place without her consent. The rather strange ruling from the high court in the central state of Chhattisgarh came on a case in which the woman died of rectal injuries.
The single bench of Justice Narendra Kumar Vyas on Monday (Feb 10) observed that the husband cannot be prosecuted for a rape offence under Section 376 or unnatural sex under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), reported Live Law. Marital rape is still not a punishable offence by law in India.

Therefore, this Court is of the considered opinion that the offence under Section 376 and 377 of the IPC against the appellant is not made out,&rdquo; it said.

In late 2017, the man allegedly subjected his wife to unnatural sex against her will. Following this, the woman complained of pain and was admitted to the hospital. According to the doctors, she died of peritonitis and rectal perforation.

While the trial court gave the man a 10-year sentence in prison, the High Court acquitted him of all charges .
It held that any sexual intercourse or sexual act between a married couple cannot be termed as rape if she is above the age of 15. In such cases, unnatural sex cannot be treated as an offence.
The ruling said, &ldquo;From perusal of Section 375, 376 and 377 IPC, it is quite vivid that in view of amended definition of Section 375 IPC, offence under Section 377 IPC between husband and wife has no place and, as such rape cannot be made out.&rdquo;

<h2>No-Vehicle Zone and other special arrangements for Magh Purnima 'Snan'</h2>
On Wednesday (Feb 12), authorities announced a slew of measures ahead of the Magh Purnima Snan at the Mahakumbh. This includes a 'No Vehicle Zone' in the area.
Authorities have implemented a ban on the vehicles of the Kalpavasis while instructing that public as well as private vehicles will be parked in the parking lots of respective routes.
A special traffic plan was enforced from Tuesday (Feb 11) 5 pm until February 12, restricting access to only essential and emergency services.
Previously, on Monday (Feb 10), Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Indian Railways has made comprehensive arrangements at eight railway stations to facilitate smooth travel for devotees attending the Magh Purnima celebrations at Mahakumbh.

Everything is going on in a systematic manner," he said.
Meanwhile, Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information &amp; Publicity Department of the Railway Board, detailed the use of CCTV for monitoring purposes and said, "We have deployed more than 13,000 railway personnel at the various railway stations in the Sangam Kshetra. Special trains are also being run as per requirement."
"Yesterday, 12 and a half lakh devotees departed in 330 trains. Today also, more than 140 trains have already been operated. 1200 CCTV cameras have been installed. The monitoring is being done on 5 levels. Control rooms have been established at all stations to monitor the CCTV feed. There are CCTVs that also have face-recognition technology and Artificial Intelligence."

The arrested individuals are: - Pomil Jai & Vipin Jain – Directors of Bhole Baba Dairy and Vyshnavi Dairy - Apurva Chavda – CEO of Vyshnavi Dairy - R Rajasekaran – Managing Director of AR Dairy A special CBI team, along with Andhra Pradesh Police and food safety officials, is probing the case. The scandal erupted last year after a Gujarat lab detected traces of animal fat—fish oil, beef tallow and lard—in ghee samples supplied for laddu preparation at the temple. The findings triggered a nationwide uproar, leading to a Supreme Court-monitored investigation. Manipulated documents and misleading bids As per NDTV, according to a police remand report, the accused manipulated tenders. - AR Dairy claimed it could supply six tonnes of cow milk fat daily, while actual records showed much lower procurement. - Ghee production figures were altered to meet tender requirements. - AR Dairy allegedly sourced ghee from Vyshnavi Dairy via Bhole Baba Dairy, repackaging it as its own. Investigators also found evidence of financial incentives—Apurva Chavda reportedly offered AR Dairy a commission of Rs 2.75–3 per kg of ghee supplied.
