Debris from the MSC ELSA3 cargo ship that sank off the Kerala coast on May 25 has now reached the coasts of adjoining Tamil Nadu state, raising environmental concerns. The Liberian-flagged cargo vessel with hazardous cargo, more than 640 containers, and over 400 metric tonnes of fuel had sunk about 30 km off Alappuzha, Kerala, following which plastic pellets and shipping containers began washing along the Kerala coast.&nbsp;The Tamil Nadu-headquartered Indian Coast Guard Region East personnel have been keeping a close watch on the situation and coordinating response to tackle the debris, including plastic pellets that have washed ashore along Tamil Nadu coasts at Colachel and Kanyakumari. Besides, a 40-foot shipping container has also washed ashore at the Kodimunai beach.Indian Coast Guard teams have been deputed to these locations for assisting the district administration in the ongoing cleanup operations.&nbsp;On Friday, 30th&nbsp;May, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin held a meeting regarding the safe disposal of the plastic particles and other debris floating along the southern coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. The meeting touched upon the possible impact of the debris on fisheries, and the measures to be taken to protect the environment.&nbsp;Further, the fisheries department has advised that fishing and related activities be avoided in this region, and to check whether marine life has been affected and plastic particles are found in fish.While the Tamil Nadu government said that no hazardous materials have washed up on the state’s coast, it has advised the public and fisherfolk to immediately report any plastic particles, containers, or suspicious items found along the coast.&nbsp;<h2>Kerala declared MSC ELSA 3 shipwreck a state disaster</h2>&nbsp;On 29th May, four days after cargo ship MSC ELSA3 sank off its coast, the government in the southern Indian state of Kerala declared it a state disaster. Through the week, shipping containers and plastic pellets washed ashore along Kerala’s scenic beaches.&nbsp;The maritime incident has raised serious environmental concerns, including the potential for oil spill and drifting of debris, including cargo, along the coastline, said the Kerala government.&nbsp;“Considering the potentially serious environmental, social, and economic impact of the ship wreckage, the Government hereby declares the wreckage of ship M/s ELSA 3 in the Arabian sea 14.6 nautical miles off the Kerala coast as a State-Specific disaster,” read a statement from Kerala’s Disaster Management Department.&nbsp;The declaration of state disaster indicates the severity of the incident, as Kerala is a popular hub for tourists, is rich in marine life and biodiversity, offers wide range of seafood, and has the highest seafood-consuming population in India. This disaster has also occurred at a time when the Southwest monsoon is active in the region, causing rough seas, harsh winds, and heavy rainfall, which can potentially carry the debris far and wide.&nbsp;<h2>Here’s how Indian Coast Guard responded to the environmental disaster</h2>&nbsp;Since the morning hours of Sunday, 25th May, when the Liberian-flagged cargo vessel MSC ELSA3 sank off the Kerala coast, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) assets have been combating the resultant oil spill and marine pollution. Oil spills are major maritime disasters that have the potential to cause serious damage to the economy and biodiversity of the affected region.&nbsp;According to the ICG, within 2-3 hours of the cargo vessel’s sinking, their surveillance aircraft detected the presence of an oil slick at the site, following which ICG ship Saksham, already on standby in Pollution Response (PR) configuration, was immediately deployed to begin counter-pollution operations. In parallel, a Dornier aircraft was launched for aerial assessment and the dispersal of Oil Spill Dispersant (OSD) across a wide area.&nbsp;On Sunday, the oil slick was observed drifting in an east-southeast direction at an estimated speed of 3.6 kmph. The prevailing active Southwest monsoon, with rough seas and strong winds, presented challenging conditions for responders.&nbsp;Despite the adverse conditions, ICG personnel continued their operations with resilience, navigating dangerous waters littered with floating containers and ensuring safe diversion of all merchant traffic away from the affected zone. By Sunday noon, the spill was assessed to have spread over an area of approximately two square kilometres.&nbsp;Further, more than 100 containers were observed floating near the site, with some breaking apart and their contents scattered in adjacent waters. Mariners have been issued advisories to maintain a sharp lookout and exercise caution, as metallic shipping containers coming in contact with a vessel’s propeller or other systems could cause serious damage.&nbsp;ICG continues intensive surveillance and spill mitigation through air operations and deployment of Oil Spill dispersant Chemicals using specialised equipment. Two ICG Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) remain on-site for ongoing monitoring, assessment, and pollution response. In addition, the ICG has mobilised ICG Ship Samudra Prahari, a specialised Pollution Response Vessel carrying significant quantities of oil dispersing chemicals, along with additional OPVs in Pollution Response configuration.&nbsp;On Sunday, a coordination meeting was convened by the Directorate General of Shipping, bringing together key stakeholders including ICG, vessel owners, managers, Kerala state authorities, and others to implement an integrated response strategy. In parallel, a Dornier aircraft was launched for aerial assessment and the dispersal of Oil Spill Dispersant (OSD) across a wide area. On Sunday, the oil slick was observed drifting in an east-southeast direction at an estimated speed of 3.6 kmph. The prevailing active Southwest monsoon, with rough seas and strong winds, presented challenging conditions for responders. Despite the adverse conditions, ICG personnel continued their operations with resilience, navigating dangerous waters littered with floating containers and ensuring safe diversion of all merchant traffic away from the affected zone. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan, has revealed that approximately 15% of armed forces’ time during Operation Sindoor went into countering fake news and misleading narratives, and added that the way wars are fought has changed and modern warfare depends on technology, cyber operations, and the ability to control information.&nbsp;“Combating fake news was a constant effort. Our communication strategy was deliberate; we chose to be measured, not reactive, because misinformation can quickly distort public perception during high-stakes operations,” General Chauhan said on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, reported ANI.&nbsp;The CDS further stressed that India’s strategy for managing narratives should prioritise verified facts and credible evidence, even if it results in a more measured or delayed public response.&nbsp;“India has always built its narratives on solid ground, even if we’ve sometimes been slow to present them. For instance, in the first three days, two women officers were our primary spokespeople because the actual military leadership were directly engaged in fast-moving operations. It was only after the 10th that the DGMOs came forward to brief the media,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“As someone directly involved in these operations, I can say that cyber did play a role in the conflict, but its impact was limited. While both sides did experience attacks, including some denial-of-service efforts, our military systems are air-gapped, meaning they’re not connected to the internet and are therefore largely secure. Attacks on public-facing platforms like school websites may have occurred, but they did not affect operational systems,” he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;During a press briefing amid Operation Sindoor, India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, had criticised Pakistan for spreading disinformation.“The claims that they have made about attacking various military installations are completely false. The claim about the air station in Sirsa being destroyed is completely false. The claim about the air station in Surat—completely false.... These are lies about critical infrastructure, power systems, and cyberstructures. I urge all watching this not to be misled by the lies being peddled by Pakistan,” he had said.&nbsp;Operation Sindoor began with airstrikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7, but the operation was much more than just physical combat, the CDS said.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was “multi-domain” and, besides traditional military action, included cyber capabilities, intelligence, disinformation management, and the coordination of multiple forces across land, air, sea, and cyber.“Modern warfare is undergoing a complex convergence of tactical, operational, and strategic layers; old and new domains; and even of time and space,” news agency ANI quoted Anil Chauhan as saying.&nbsp;<h2>‘Integrated tech and real-time networking vital elements of warfare now’</h2>&nbsp;The CDS further stressed the need for integrated technology in warfare. “What matters most in modern warfare is the networking of systems and real-time integration across air, land, sea and cyber domains. If you have great tech but it’s not connected, you can’t fully leverage it.”&nbsp;Chauhan also said that India is preparing for future warfare by embracing technology, joint operations, and better narrative control, as demonstrated during Operation Sindoor.“We’re no longer fighting linear wars; we’re operating across distributed networks, applying force in non-linear ways, where deception is becoming more important than surprise,” he said.&nbsp;“We’ll need separate organisations for drones, EW, UTAPs (Unmanned Teaming Aerial Platforms), etc.,” he said. &nbsp;General Chauhan also highlighted the importance of reform in military structure and training and said India is moving towards more integrated and agile forces.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan, has revealed that approximately 15% of armed forces’ time during Operation Sindoor went into countering fake news and misleading narratives, and added that the way wars are fought has changed and modern warfare depends on technology, cyber operations, and the ability to control information. “Combating fake news was a constant effort. Our communication strategy was deliberate; we chose to be measured, not reactive, because misinformation can quickly distort public perception during high-stakes operations,” General Chauhan said on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, reported ANI. The CDS further stressed that India’s strategy for managing narratives should prioritise verified facts and credible evidence, even if it results in a more measured or delayed public response. “India has always built its narratives on solid ground, even if we’ve sometimes been slow to present them. For instance, in the first three days, two women officers were our primary spokespeople because the actual military leadership were directly engaged in fast-moving operations. It was only after the 10th that the DGMOs came forward to brief the media,” he said. “As someone directly involved in these operations, I can say that cyber did play a role in the conflict, but its impact was limited. While both sides did experience attacks, including some denial-of-service efforts, our military systems are air-gapped, meaning they’re not connected to the internet and are therefore largely secure. Attacks on public-facing platforms like school websites may have occurred, but they did not affect operational systems,” he added. During a press briefing amid Operation Sindoor, India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, had criticised Pakistan for spreading disinformation. “The claims that they have made about attacking various military installations are completely false. The claim about the air station in Sirsa being destroyed is completely false. The claim about the air station in Surat—completely false.... These are lies about critical infrastructure, power systems, and cyberstructures. I urge all watching this not to be misled by the lies being peddled by Pakistan,” he had said. Operation Sindoor began with airstrikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7, but the operation was much more than just physical combat, the CDS said. Siddaramaiah told the review meeting that ample funds were available to "compensate for house damages"."There's no shortage of funds to compensate for house damages. There's Rs 1,000 crore available under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF)," he said.The Karnataka CM promised ₹1.25 lakh compensation for families who have lost their houses to the rainfall."For homes that are completely damaged, the government will provide a compensation of Rs 1.25 lakh. Such families will get a new house built for them, for which DCs need to take the initiative," he said.The Indian state has gram panchayat-level task forces to lead natural disaster relief work. Siddaramaiah said that "If all of them work in tandem, precautionary measures can be taken".Directing DCs and CEOs to visit affected areas and oversee relief efforts, he warned them that action would be taken if they were tardy in clearing lake encroachments. A new scientific study has warned that the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region could lose up to 75 per cent of its glacier ice by 2100 if global temperatures rise by 2 degrees celsius above pre-industrial levels. The region is the primary source of major river systems and supports nearly two billion people across Asia.&nbsp;The findings, published in the Journal Science, highlight the importance of limiting warming under the Paris Agreement targets. The study also shows that if warming is kept to 1.5 degree celsius, 40–45 per cent of glacier ice in the Himalayas and the Caucasus could still be saved.<h2>Global glacier loss worsens with warming</h2>Globally, not more than 24 per cent of glacier ice would remain if temperatures rise to 2.7 degree Celsius, the path projected under current climate policies. In contrast, if we succeed in holding warming to 1.5 degree celsius, we could preserve 54 per cent of current glacier mass worldwide.&nbsp;Regions such as the European Alps, North American Rockies, and Iceland which are critical to human populations are particularly vulnerable. At 2 degree celsius warming, these areas could retain not more than just 10–15 per cent of their 2020 glacier volumes. The most concerning part is that Scandinavia could lose all glacier ice entirely.<h2>Long-term effects will persist</h2>Researchers emphasise that even if global temperatures stabilise, the loss of glacier will still continue for decades. It will over centuries for glaciers to slowly retreat to higher altitudes, before they can reach a new balance.&nbsp;A team of about 21 scientists from 10 countries used eight glacier models to assess over 200,000 glaciers under various warming scenarios. The study is released at a crucial time when the UN’s first conference on glaciers in Dushanbe is ongoing. It is bein attended by over 50 countries.&nbsp;

Satellite injected," it is a sign of relief and joy for the ISRO leadership at the Mission Control Centre, as well as the Indian space enthusiasts watching the live stream. However, these announcements are only a minor part of the Range Operations Director's role.&nbsp;The Range Operations Director is responsible for coordinating between the rocket team, satellite team, and spaceport team, providing technical and logistical support. It involves taking part in supervising the health checks of the rocket, satellite, tracking systems, radars, etc. Finalising the countdown timing for every mission is also a crucial role of the Range Operations Director.&nbsp;About the love and adulation that he receives from the space enthusiast fraternity, Grahadurai says, I have to thank God and my parents for my voice. "As the Range Operations Director, my role is to announce the events clearly to the public. In that process, due to emotional attachment and complete involvement towards every mission, my voice has a unique, soulful feel and tone," he suggests.&nbsp;Grahadurai's voice and announcements have also become quite the viral phenomenon on social media and among the space enthusiast community. Even at home, Grahadurai has admirers who try and mimic him. "Not only my grandchildren, but many friends, relatives and the public have fun by mimicking my announcements and voice," he says laughingly.&nbsp;Hailing from Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu, the city known for firecrackers, Grahadurai's life journey took him to the Indian spaceport in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, where he has contributed to 96 of India's 101 rocket launches, in various functional designations. Since January 2020, in his role as Range Operations Director, he has made announcements for 24 of ISRO's 101 rocket launches, which is a record in itself.An Electronics and Communications Engineer by qualification, Grahadurai's notable work includes developing ISRO's Mission Control Centre, the upcoming Gaganyaan Control Facilities for the Human Spaceflight programme, and Range Operations infrastructure at the upcoming spaceport in Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;"Indeed, I will miss the roles and responsibilities of being the Range Operations Director, and the announcements during a launch mission. But with things coming back on track in the Kashmir Valley, tourists from across the country have started returning to the Valley and especially to Pahalgam. The hotels and tour operators have started getting queries for Kashmir yet again. The government is also hopeful that tourism will be restored in the Valley soon.&nbsp; &nbsp; Pahalgam is also witnessing tourist arrivals every day and things are looking positive for the people associated with the tourism industry.&nbsp; ''We were doubtful whether we should come or not but then we decided to come. Our army is guarding us all the time. But what we regret is that our tourist brothers were killed brutally. We still cry about it and we are sad. We are also paying tribute to those who died here in Pahalgam and wish that these incidents don't happen again. People should come here without being scared," said Meena Behn, a tourist.&nbsp; &nbsp; Some of the tourists visiting have appealed to the government to open all those tourist spots which have been closed after the Pahalgam attack.&nbsp; ''I have come from Udaipur, Rajasthan to enjoy the beauty of Kashmir. We are enjoying it and having a blast here. Kashmir is very beautiful, and people here are too good, cooperative and helpful. We hope to see all the places and we are waiting for all the places to open so that we can see it all. It's our third day and we are also planning Gulmarg and Sonamarg after this. We are very safe here, '' said Sakina, a tourist.&nbsp; &nbsp; The tour operators from across the country were in Kashmir Valley and went to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg to send a message that things were back to Normal. The tourists visiting the Valley are hopeful that after them people from every state of the country will start coming to the Valley again.&nbsp; &nbsp; ''I have just entered Pahalgam and what I had heard and what we are seeing on the ground is totally different. Everything is very safe here. We had cancelled our trip first and then we planned again. People were saying things but it's not at all like that. People are very friendly and helpful. All the facilities are being provided, and I am sure our trip is going to be nice, '' said Ismail Jedhwa, a tourist.&nbsp; &nbsp; Some of the tourists who are visiting also said that they believe in India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the security forces for their safety.&nbsp; &nbsp; ''We are not at all scared. Our PM Modi is with us, and Our military is with us. Jammu and Kashmir is ours, so why should we be scared? Our government is taking care of everything, and people should come and enjoy it here, '' said Priti Patel. The Hoteliers and Tour operators in the Valley have slashed the prices for the tourists planning to come to Kashmir Valley as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;
