This was the third such security lapse during mock drills ahead of August 15 celebrations.<h2>What happened?</h2>Citing a Delhi police officer, Hindustan Times reports that the dummy terrorist entered the Red Fort premises by scaling a wall near the Nishad Raj Road petrol pump. He then "spent considerable time loitering" in the high-security seating zone and even took selfies and recorded videos among security personnel before leaving.Photos and videos of the mock security breach were later shared with the police headquarters and the Prime Minister's security unit as per protocol. However, no disciplinary action has been taken against the erring officers.<h2>Third such breach</h2>This was the third security drill that ended in a breach in recent days. Previously, seven police personnel were suspended after failing to stop a man from entering the Red Fort premises with a dummy bomb during a similar mock drill. In a bizarre twist, an investigation of a theft in Bengaluru's Indiranagar got Constable HR Sonar suspended as the ghost of the past came haunting.&nbsp;&nbsp;Saleem Sheikh, aka Bombay Saleem, a notorious thief, has been involved in multiple thefts. And in 2024, he was arrested by the Govindapura police for 50 such cases. As the officials were making attempts to recover the jewellery and valuables he had allegedly stolen, he was taken outside the city and put up in a lodge.&nbsp;Now, this is when Saleem pulled the stunt of wearing the cop’s uniform and quickly dialling his wife in a bid to impress her. All was well until a year later, in a completely different case involving Saleem, the police checked his phone as part of the investigation. This led to another enquiry in which it was learnt that when constables, who were supervising the thief, left him unattended. They would contact people under the pretext of verification or inquiry. The initial investigation also revealed that several counterfeit stamps, letterheads, and copies of government symbols were found in their possession.&nbsp;The six arrested individuals were identified as Vibhansh, Aragya, Babul, Pintu Pal, Sampam Dal, and Ashish, all residents of Kolkata, Birbhum, and the 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal. Of these, four have completed Class 12, one holds a BA degree, and one has an LLB degree. Taking the matter seriously, the Central Zone Police have begun investigating the accused’s network and financial transactions. Further action is underway.&nbsp;

In response to the action, five people were arrested. The arrested individuals include Bharat Kumar, Mena Dapuben, Jagdish Kumar, Rata Ram, and Dilip Kumar.&nbsp;As per the CBI, the girl went missing after she left home for tuition on August 9, 2023. In a surprising turn of events, the investigation disclosed that the missing girl was a minor when she went missing, but was mentioned as a major in marriage affidavits. The CBI suspected this incident was a big human trafficking network, as she was sold twice for marriage.<h3>Case transferred from local police to CBI</h3>Following the directive of the Calcutta High Court, the investigative agency registered the case on February 16, 2024. The metro network in the city will expand to over 96 km, serving a large population in the region.&nbsp;The prime minister will also lay the foundation stone of the Bangalore Metro Phase-3 project worth over Rs 15,610 crore, which has a total route length of more than 44 km with 31 elevated stations. The projects are aimed at addressing the growing transportation requirements of Bengaluru in residential, commercial, educational, and industrial areas.

He gave an example of the house no. 35 in Muni Reddy Garden, Mahadevpura, which houses 80 registered voters. Several outlets like India Today, The Print, and Deccan Herald independently visited the address mentioned by Rahul Gandhi. The findings raised serious red flags. The house is occupied by a food delivery agent, Dipankar, from West Bengal, on rent. The house belongs to Jayaram Reddy, who once claimed to be with the BJP but later backtracked.&nbsp;Other independent verifications in Election Commission websites show bizarre findings, like many voters registered with house number zero, multiple voters voting with the same names, same address, a gibberish collection of random letters in the names and illegible microscopic images are present in the Election Commission's voter list. Open source analysis by Peek TV shows that the assembly in Bengaluru Central, which is in the middle of this political storm, has one voter named Gurkirat Singh Dang who is registered in four different polling booths and has four different voter IDs. Similarly, Aditya Shrivastava, a voter, is registered in UP, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.<h2>How did ECI respond?</h2>ECI quickly dismissed all the allegations, calling it a 'tired script' relating it to the previous claims of voter theft in 2018 by Congress leaders that were dismissed by the Supreme Court. &nbsp;It has demanded that Rahul Gandhi should either sign an apology or a formal declaration; refusal to do that means a lack of belief in his claims. The same affidavit-level evidence was asked by the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The Election Commission of India cited Registration of Electors Rules 1960, 20(3)(b), a signed oath from Rahul Gandhi.&nbsp;However, according to the rules, the Registration officer doesn't need to seek a signed oath. Similarly, Section 12 states that any complaint must be submitted within 30 days of the publication of the draft roll. Even if Rahul Gandhi signs an oath, the Registration Officer can just refuse to entertain the claims. So why do ECI need an affidavit if they can just deny it? Is it an attempt to buy time to cover up the mess created?It is to be noted that these duplicate voters do not necessarily indicate voter manipulation; these can stem from technical and mechanical errors as well as poor voter synchronisation. But the reaction from the ECI smells fishy. Former Justice of Bombay High Court BG Kolse Patil has criticised ECI's response as overly arrogant, called for Supreme Court intervention to hold them accountable.&nbsp;<h2>Why is ECI reluctant to release electronic voter roll data?</h2>The ECI argues that voter rolls contain sensitive personal data, even though they are available publicly in PDF form. Releasing this in bulk will make it easier for targeted political ads, scams and voter profiling. &nbsp;Moreover, historically, parties have used these data to send campaign messages and botcalls. They often cite Right to Privacy judgments from previous cases and lack of a Data protection infrastructure. But releasing the voter data will make large-scale duplicate audits possible, thus revealing the errors or malpractices. This is exactly the kind of audit that will give Rahul Gandhi's vote theft claim strength in spine. Thus, ECI controls the narrative by limiting access to the electronic voter data.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Open source analysis by Peek TV shows that the assembly in Bengaluru Central, which is in the middle of this political storm, has one voter named Gurkirat Singh Dang who is registered in four different polling booths and has four different voter IDs. Similarly, Aditya Shrivastava, a voter, is registered in UP, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. How did ECI respond? ECI quickly dismissed all the allegations, calling it a 'tired script' relating it to the previous claims of voter theft in 2018 by Congress leaders that were dismissed by the Supreme Court. It has demanded that Rahul Gandhi should either sign an apology or a formal declaration; refusal to do that means a lack of belief in his claims. The same affidavit-level evidence was asked by the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The Election Commission of India cited Registration of Electors Rules 1960, 20(3)(b), a signed oath from Rahul Gandhi. However, according to the rules, the Registration officer doesn't need to seek a signed oath. Similarly, Section 12 states that any complaint must be submitted within 30 days of the publication of the draft roll. Even if Rahul Gandhi signs an oath, the Registration Officer can just refuse to entertain the claims. So why do ECI need an affidavit if they can just deny it? Is it an attempt to buy time to cover up the mess created? It is to be noted that these duplicate voters do not necessarily indicate voter manipulation; these can stem from technical and mechanical errors as well as poor voter synchronisation. But the reaction from the ECI smells fishy. Former Justice of Bombay High Court BG Kolse Patil has criticised ECI's response as overly arrogant, called for Supreme Court intervention to hold them accountable. Why is ECI reluctant to release electronic voter roll data? The ECI argues that voter rolls contain sensitive personal data, even though they are available publicly in PDF form. Releasing this in bulk will make it easier for targeted political ads, scams and voter profiling. Moreover, historically, parties have used these data to send campaign messages and botcalls. They often cite Right to Privacy judgments from previous cases and lack of a Data protection infrastructure. But releasing the voter data will make large-scale duplicate audits possible, thus revealing the errors or malpractices. This is exactly the kind of audit that will give Rahul Gandhi's vote theft claim strength in spine. Thus, ECI controls the narrative by limiting access to the electronic voter data.
