This is the first census since 2011, the 16th Indian census in the series and the 8th census since Indian Independence. The 2027 census will be conducted in two phases, first phase, House Listing and Housing Census (HLO) and the second phase, Population Enumeration (PE). The first phase will start from April 1, 2026, and continue till September 30, 2026. The first phase will provide data on housing conditions, amenities available, and assets possessed by households and provide a framework for the second phase on sociocultural and economic data. This was done because the satellites weighed much more than 4,000kg, which is the maximum lifting capability of India's LVM3 rocket.As India's growing space ambitions include the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme(astronaut mission), proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station(Indian crewed space station), envisioned crewed moon landing, the country is in dire need of more rocketry muscle power. Designing and developing all-new rockets and rocket engines could take decades or longer, which is why India is looking to purchase the powerful 'RD-191' engine from Russia.&nbsp;How would India utilize the 'RD-191' engines? &nbsp;While the Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) wishes to design and develop powerful rockets for the future, India's immediate priority is to enhance the lifting capability of the LVM3. To accomplish this,&nbsp;ISRO&nbsp;can use the Russian 'RD-191' engine and associated systems to replace the existing L110 or second stage of the three-stage LVM3 rocket. This is one step towards significantly enhancing the lifting power of the LVM3 rocket.&nbsp;The LVM3's lifting power can be further bolstered by using a more capable C32&nbsp;Cryogenic upper stage developed in-house by&nbsp;ISRO. This would help&nbsp;ISRO&nbsp;to launch satellites weighing around 4,500-5,000kg from home soil on its own rocket, while reducing dependence on foreign rockets.&nbsp;In the foreseeable future, the LVM3 rocket powered by the Russian&nbsp;Semi&nbsp;Cryogenic engine and the Indian C32&nbsp;Cryogenic stage could be used for various missions that were earlier not possible for&nbsp;ISRO&nbsp;due to the rocketry muscle power deficiency.&nbsp;ISRO's future rockets can be designed and developed based on the capabilities offered by the 'RD-191' engine. In heavy-lift rocketry, multiple engines are used in a cluster to deliver high amounts of lifting power. Therefore, a single rocket would require a dozen or more engines. In such cases, production of the engine in India under licence would be a necessity. While the Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) wishes to design and develop powerful rockets for the future, India's immediate priority is to enhance the lifting capability of the LVM3. To accomplish this, ISRO can use the Russian 'RD-191' engine and associated systems to replace the existing L110 or second stage of the three-stage LVM3 rocket. This is one step towards significantly enhancing the lifting power of the LVM3 rocket. The LVM3's lifting power can be further bolstered by using a more capable C32 Cryogenic upper stage developed in-house by ISRO. This would help ISRO to launch satellites weighing around 4,500-5,000kg from home soil on its own rocket, while reducing dependence on foreign rockets. In the foreseeable future, the LVM3 rocket powered by the Russian Semi Cryogenic engine and the Indian C32 Cryogenic stage could be used for various missions that were earlier not possible for ISRO due to the rocketry muscle power deficiency. ISRO's future rockets can be designed and developed based on the capabilities offered by the 'RD-191' engine. In heavy-lift rocketry, multiple engines are used in a cluster to deliver high amounts of lifting power. Therefore, a single rocket would require a dozen or more engines. In such cases, production of the engine in India under licence would be a necessity. India and Russia have also been exploring the possibility of making the 'RD-191' in India, in partnership with industry.

For the year 2026-27, Indian Space agency ISRO has been allocated a budget estimate of ₹10,397 crores(approx $1.09bn) for various missions and developmental activities that are categorized 'Space Technology'.

Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs has warmly thanked India for rushing emergency fuel supplies as the war in West Asia threatens energy security in the region. Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs has warmly thanked India for rushing emergency fuel supplies as the war in West Asia threatens energy security in the region. "Prime Minister Modi and the people of India once again uphold the Neighbourhood First policy through the timely shipment of 38,000 tonnes of petroleum to Sri Lanka," Rajapaksa said in a post on X, adding that the nation has consistently stood as Sri Lanka’s first responder in times of crisis, from critical supplies to economic assistance, which is a true reflection of its Neighbourhood First policy.&nbsp;Citing India’s recent change in fuel excise policy, he called upon the Sri Lankan government to consider a model similar to India’s recent fuel tax adjustment. "India reduced excise duty not to lower prices immediately, but to stabilise the market and prevent further increases during global oil price shocks," he noted.&nbsp;"As Sri Lanka moves forward, the government must also strengthen its own economic policies. While fiscal discipline is important, reducing excessive tax burdens, as seen in India’s more growth-oriented approach, could help stimulate investment, ease pressure on citizens, and support long-term recovery," the MP said.&nbsp;Sri Lanka continues to face a deepening energy crisis as the ongoing West Asia conflict disrupts global fuel supplies. The government has rationed fuel and introduced a four-day working week in the state sector as a measure to conserve energy.&nbsp;Most state institutions, schools and universities have shifted to reduced schedules, while transport services have seen lower activity. Banks are operating on shorter hours, and several private firms have adopted work-from-home arrangements to curb energy use.&nbsp;Fuel prices in the country have already risen sharply after strikes involving the United States and Israel on Iran escalated tensions, triggering retaliatory attacks that have disrupted global energy supplies. The conflict intensified in the second week of March as attacks targeted energy assets, including oil tankers, refineries and LNG facilities.

Piped Natural Gas (PNG) consists mainly of methane and is delivered straight to residences via a network of underground pipes. Extracted from natural gas fields, it is often transported to India in a chilled, liquid state known as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Unlike cylinders that require manual refilling, PNG provides a continuous, low-pressure flow through city-wide grids. In contrast, LPG is a byproduct of crude oil processing at refineries. Where is PNG sourced? India’s domestic PNG supply is anchored by major gas fields in Tripura, Assam, and the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin. The Deepwater KG basin on the eastern coast is the primary producer; in 2024, its three KG basin that include MJ, Satellites Cluster, and R Cluster, generated nearly 25 per cent of the nation’s 36 bcm net production. These fields are projected to yield 85 bcm over their operational lifespan. Onshore, the Tripura and Assam basins are important, contributing nearly 47 per cent of land-based production and 13 per cent of the total national supply. To meet remaining demand, India imports LNG, largely from Qatar in the Middle East, as well as from the United States and Australia. Why does India want to switch from LPG to PNG? The most prominent rasons lies how both fuels are supplied to India. Basically, LPG highly rely on imports shipped from the Middle East, a major portion of its quantity is transported through the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, where tankers have been hit by drones and missiles amid the West Asia war. Any logistical bottleneck at those points directly impacts tanker traffic, resulting in immediate shortages, delivery lags, and noticeable disruptions like unavailable cylinders or extended waitlists. Conversely, Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is distributed via a stable, underground pipeline infrastructure, sourced from both internal gas fields and imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Since this system operates as a constant, integrated flow, it remains unaffected by the individual delivery schedules or "discrete events" required for cylinder replacements. Amid Iran war India comes to the rescue of its neighbours, sends diesel to Bangladesh

An IndiGo flight travelling from Visakhapatnam to Delhi encountered an engine failure on Saturday (Mar 28). The plane safely made an emergency landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi police confirmed. According to the Fire Department, a call was received about the incident at 10:53 am.&nbsp;According to an ANI report, citing Ministry of Civil Aviation sources, an emergency landing was made at runway 28 at the IGI Airport by at 10:39 am. The plane was carrying 161 passengers onboard. People on board were taken care of by the airlines and the DIAL Terminal operations team. The report added that all operations are normal now.In a statement, an IndiGo spokesperson said that a technical snag was detected on IndiGo flight 6E 579 shortly before landing. The spokesperson added that the pilots requested a priority landing as a precautionary step and in accordance with the standard operating procedure. The aircraft landed safely and is undergoing necessary checks and maintenance.“A technical snag was detected shortly before landing on IndiGo flight 6E 579 operating from Visakhapatnam to Delhi on 28 March 2026. As a precautionary step and in accordance with the standard operating procedure, the pilots requested for priority landing and the aircraft arrived safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. All relevant authorities were promptly informed and the aircraft is undergoing necessary checks and maintenance. At IndiGo, the safety of our customers and crew is our top priority,” the IndiGo spokesperson said.
