Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi officially took charge as the chief minister of Delhi on Monday (Sep 23).

Sharing a photo of herself alongside an empty chair on the social media platform X, she wrote, “I have taken charge as the chief minister of Delhi today and accepted this responsibility. My feelings today are the same as Bharat's when Lord Ram went into exile for 14 years and Bharat had to manage the governance of Ayodhya."

Atishi took over the role of chief minister following Arvind Kejriwal's resignation.Kejriwal resigned after he was granted bail in case related to the Delhi liquor policy scam.

Background and education

Atishi, born on June 8, 1981, hails from a Punjabi Rajput family in Delhi. Both of her parents, Vijay and Tripta Singh, areprofessors at Delhi University. Her original name, Atishi Marlena, was inspired by revolutionary figures Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin, reflecting her father's political leanings.She dropped her surname 'Marlena' ahead of the 2019 elections.

Oxford alumnus

Atishi completed her undergraduate studies at St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Oxford on a Chevening scholarship. Her academic background played a significant role in shaping her approach to education reforms in Delhi.

Advocacy for environmental issues

Atishi advocates for environmental issues alongside her educational initiatives. She has been actively working to implement policies on sustainability, renewable energy and pollution control in Delhi.

Political career

Atishi has been a part of AAP since 2013 and currently serves as the MLA for Kalkaji. She gained significant recognition for her contributions to Delhi’s education sector, particularly during her tenure as an adviser to Deputy CM Manish Sisodia in 2015.

Contested 2019 Lok Sabha elections but lost

Atishi, despite her notable efforts in improving Delhi’s education system, encountered a difficult political challenge inthe 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Running from East Delhi, she was defeated by BJP’s Gautam Gambhir. However, she quickly regained momentum by winning the Kalkaji seat in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections.
