Pune Porsche crash victim's mother wants teen's parents punished; Rahul Gandhi reacts

The grieving mother of one of the two victims of the recent Pune Porche accident said the parents of the drunk teen whose road rampage killed her daughter must be punished. Mamata Koshta, mother of Ashwini Koshta said the 17-year-old's parents must be punished "for the way they brought up their child".

Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 24-year-old IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh state in central India, were killed on the spot after a Porsche driven by a 17-year-old drunk teen hit their bike in western Pune city's Kalyani Nagar area.

Police confirmed that the teenager was drunk at the time of the accident.

Ashwini's body was brought to the family's home in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur on Tuesday. "The parents [of the accused] should be punished for the way they have brought up their child. There should be legal action to ensure such an incident does not happen again," Ashwini's mother Mamata Koshta said.

The Juvenile Justice Board granted bail to the teenager hours after the accident, only asking him to write an essay on road accidents and assist traffic police for the next few days.

His father, a real estate developer, reportedly changed cities within Maharashtra, used a different SIM Card before finally being arrested.

Three executives of two hotels — Cosie restaurant owner Pralhad Bhutda and manager Sachin Katkar and Hotel Blak manager Sandip Sangle — who served liquor to the juvenile prior to the accident have been arrested.

The accident has created widespread uproar all over the country against the purported VVIP culture, an Indian euphemism for class divisionsthat put a section of citizens among the so-called 'very very important persons' category.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took to social media to assert that 'justice rests on wealth' in the world's largest democracy.

"If a bus driver, truck drover, or any Ola, Uber or auto driver accidentally kills someone, they are sentenced to 10 years in jail."

"However, if a 16-17-year-old son of a wealthy household, driving a Porsche under the influence, is caught, he is asked to write an essay," Gandhi said. "Why aren't essays assigned to truck drivers or bus drivers?"
