Patient stuck for two nights in Kerala's medical college hospital, three staffers suspended

For two nights, a patient was stuck in a broken elevator in a hospitalin southern India till he was rescued on Monday (July 15). The incident happened in the prestigious and often busy Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala.
Ravindran Nair had gone to the outpatient department of the orthopaedic division of the hospital on Saturday morning, local media reports said. He was there to get treatment for back pain.
The lift he was in broke down at noon.
He could not call for help as his mobile phone fell down and broke when the lift stopped with a thud.

It being the weekend, nobody cared to check the lift on Sunday.
It was not even found for two days that someone was stuck inside the elevator.
When the operator opened the lift on Monday, Nair was found lying amid his urine and excreta.
Patient stuck in Kerala hospital elevator: Three staff suspended
On Monday, three staff members of the medical college were suspended over the incident.
Those suspended pending further investigation were two lift operators, and a hospital sergeant on duty at the time.
The state's health minister Veena George asked the medical education department director to investigate the incident and take necessary measures.

This came after a joint investigation by the medical education joint director, medical college principal, and superintendent.
After being rescued, Nair said others in the hospital did not notice his situation, and the lift operator locked the lift and left on Saturday. On Sunday nobody came near the lift or opened it, he said.
Nair's family had filed a complaint at the hospital after he went missing, but he could not be found. He was later admitted to the hospital and found to be having blood pressure issues.
