NEET aspirants allege inflation of marks, NTA denies discrepancies
One of India's most sought-after exams, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) that is the gateway for admission to medical colleges,found itself surrounded by controversy this week after several aspirants complained about inflation of marks.
The result declaration of NEET on Wednesday (Jun 5) witnessed an unprecedented 67 candidates bagging the top rank, out of which six were from the same exam centre in the northern state of Haryana.
The National Testing Agency (NTA), however, dismissed the claims regarding discrepancies and irregularities in the result.
It cited changes made to the NCERT textbooks and 'grace marks' given to students for losing time at the examination centres as the reasons behind students scoring higher marks.
"Such cases and representations were considered by NTA and the normalisation formula, which has been devised and adopted by Supreme Court, vide its Judgment dated 13.06.2018, was implemented to address the loss of time faced by the candidates of NEET (UG) 2024," it said in a statement.
"The loss of examination time was ascertained and such candidates were compensated with grace marks. So, there marks can be 718 or 719 also," the statement added.

Congress slams Modi govt over alleged discrepancies in NEET exam
The opposition Congress slammed the central government over the alleged irregularities and discrepancies in the NEET exam and accused it of ruining the future of millions of youth.
"After the NEET exam, now the NEET result is also in controversy. After the NEET results were declared, questions are being raised on six students from the same centre getting 720 out of 720 marks. Apart from this, many other irregularities related to the NEET exam have also come to light," the Congress wrote on X.
"First due to paper leak and now due to result error, the future of lakhs of youth of the country is getting ruined. It is clear that this government cannot get any paper done without leaking it. Sir claims to stop wars in foreign countries but he is unable to even stop paper leaks in the country," the party added.
MK Stalin urges state governments to stand up against NEET discrepancies
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday (Jun 6), urged all the state governments to stand up against the NEET discrepancies, denouncing the conduct of such entrance examinations.
MK Stalin took to his official X handle and wrote, "Trends emerging from the latest #NEET results have once again vindicated our principled opposition to the exam. Issues such as question paper leaks, clustering of toppers at specific centres, and award of marks, which are mathematically impossible, under the guise of grace marks highlight the pitfalls of the current Union Government's centralisation."
"These events emphasise the need to restore the preeminence State governments' and school education system's role in determining criteria for professional course selection. We reiterate that NEET and other entrance examinations are anti-poor, they undermine federal polity, impact the availability of doctors in deserving areas and are against social justice," he added.
