The Mumbai civic body has ordered a high-level probe into the death of a woman who fell into a stormwater drain during heavy rainfall in Andheri East, Mumbai. The tragic incident happened on Wednesday at 9:20 pm, the police said.
The 45-year-old woman, identified as Vimal Anil Gaikwad, was stuck in an open drain and drowned. She was taken to the Cooper Hospital after the local police and fire department were alerted. According to the authorities, she was declared brought dead to the hospital.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Thursday, September 26, that a probe is ordered into the incident.

“BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani orders a high-level inquiry into the incident where a woman died after falling into an open drainage. The report to be submitted within 3 days,” said BMC.
“This incident was unfortunate. I have ordered a probe. The responsibility will be fixed,” Gagrani told Hindustan Times.
A committee of three has been formed to look into the incident, which will be headed by deputy municipal commissioner (zone 3) Devidas Kshirsagar. Mumbai Fire Brigade Chief Ravindra Ambulgekar and Chief Engineer Avinash Tambewagh are also part of the committee.

“There was a cross culvert and Gaikwad fell in this. We recovered her body 50 feet away from where she fell. We are collecting evidence,” a civic officer said, reported Hindustan Times.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and Thane as heavy downpours lash the city. A red alert has been issued for parts of Palghar also.
The authorities announced the closure of schools as train services have been affected on Thursday. At least four people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents in Mumbai and nearby regions.
