UNESCO has described 'Kumbha Mela' as India's ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage' on Friday.
The 'mela' was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UN body. Kumbha Mela is one of the oldest and holiest congregations of pilgrims that takes places every 12 years and rotates between four holysites of Hindu tradition - Allahabad, Ujjain, Nasik and Haridwar.
It was identified as one of the newest additions to the list this year among 33 others.
The list describes Kumbh Mela as “the festival of the sacred Pitcher” where pilgrims bathe or take a dip in a sacred river.
The decision was taken by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage meeting in Jeju, South Korea.

Other additions to the list include Bangladesh’s traditional art of Shital Pati weaving, which basically refers to the art form of weaving strips of green cane into a handcrafted mat, usually used for prayer purposes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief MinisterYogi Adityanath and MP Chief MinisterShivraj Singh Chouhan were some of the leaders who expressed their happiness on the occasion.
"Held every 12 years, it is not only the largest congregation of pilgrims but reflects our cultural diversity & integrity," tweeted Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
