The Supreme Court resumed hearing in the suo motu case related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate medic at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Monday (Sep 30) and noted that substantial leads have come up in the CBI investigation. The bench said that the investigative agency has given statements on both aspects — alleged rape and murder and financial irregularities.
Substantial leads in CBI investigation
During the hearing, Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, said, "Very substantial leads have come up in the CBI Investigation. Obviously, let the CBI continue the investigation."
Court criticises West Bengal government’s slow progress on security measures
The court also criticised the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal for the slow pace in setting up CCTV cameras and other essential facilities like toilets and separate rest areas for women. “Why is the progress so tardy? We have been hearing this matter since some time now,” said the bench.

The bench further noted that while West Bengal's status report mentioned that work is ongoing, it added that “though the state has indicated that remaining work will be completed by 31st October, the state has assured that it will make all endeavours to complete the work by October 15, 2024”.
Individuals facing misconduct allegations still in position
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud also pointed out that several individuals at the college, who face serious allegations, remain in their positions. He said that while the doctor requested their suspension or placement on leave, the final decision lies with the state government.
No disclosure of victim’s identity, Supreme Court reiterates
The court also reiterated its earlier ruling that no intermediary is allowed to reveal the victim's name or photo. Advocate Vrinda Grover, representing the victim's family, raised concerns about the continued sharing of her identity on social media platforms.

“Our earlier order is clarified to apply in relation to all intermediaries and to reiterate, no intermediary shall be allowed to carry the name or pictures of her identity. MEITY shall notify a nodal officer in relation to any uploading of unauthorized publication which is taken down”, said the bench.
