India: Central government forms committee to probe Delhi coaching centre deaths

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday (Jul 29) constituted a panel to probe the drowning of three civil services aspirants at a coaching centre in New Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar last week.
The expert committee will probe into the reasons that led to the incident while fixing the responsibility, suggesting measures and recommending policy changes.
“The committee will have Additional Secretary, MoUHA, Principal Secretary (Home), Delhi Govt, Special CP, Delhi Police, Fire Adviser and JS, MHA as Convener. It will submit its report in 30 days,” MHA spokesperson posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Compensation for families of victims
Earlier in the evening, Delhi Lieutenant GeneralVinai Kumar Saxena announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the kin of the three deceased IAS aspirants. The LG also assured action against responsible officials of Delhi Fire Services, civic body MCD and the police within 24 hours.
An FIR has already been lodged in the case and a local court on Monday sent five accused, including the owner and coordinator of the coaching centreto judicial custody till August 12.
According to reports, the coaching institute violated a number of building permissions that led to the flooding. A no-objection certificate issued by the fire department showed that the basement was to used for storage but instead, it was being used as a library.
On Sunday (Jul 28), as many as 13 civil services coaching centres in the area that were illegally running operations in their basements were sealed by the MCD.
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi took to social media to inform about the drive under which coaching institutes had been sealed. She added that the drive could be expanded throughout the capital.
Oberoi asserted that a query would be conducted to find out if officers from the civic body were responsible for the tragedy at Rau's IAS Study Circle.
