India: Heap of firecrackers catches fire during Lord Jagannath festival in Odisha injuring 15

Fifteen people in the Indian state of Odisha suffered burn injuries after a heap of firecrackers explodedduring Lord Jagannath's Chandan Jatra festival, the news agency PTI reported on Thursday (May 30) citing the police.

The incident occurred in Puri on Wednesday night. The police said that hundreds of people had gatheredon the banks ofNarendra Pushkarini to witness the rituals when the explosion happened.

What caused the explosion?

The police said that a group of devotees started bursting firecrackers, adding, that suddenlya splinter from the burning crackers struck the heap, leading to the explosion. The crackers then hit the people gathered at the spot, and some of them even jumped into theNarendra Pushkarini to save themselves.

Four people in critical condition

The injured were admitted to the district hospital, and four of them were reported to be in critical condition.

In a post on X, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the incident and directed officials concerned to ensure proper treatment of the injured. "All the medical expenses of the injured will be borne by the Chief Minister's Relief Fund," Patnaik added.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also expressed grief over the incident.

"I am saddened and saddened to hear the news of many injured in the unfortunate accident that took place at Narendra Pushkarini Devighat during the Puri Chandan Yatra. With the blessings of the Lord, it is my wish that those who are under treatment get well soon and return home," Pradhan said.
