External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday took oath as a member of the Upper House after winning in by-polls from Gujarat.

On Friday, Jaishankar and party colleague Jugal Ji Thakor were declared winners in the by-polls conducted for two Rajya Sabha seats in the state.

The two seats fell vacant following the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah and Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani, who were elected to Lok Sabha in the general elections.

The Union Minister bagged 104 votes, while his Congress rival Gaurav Pandya got 70 votes.

Speaking at the press conference, Jaishankar thanked legislators for their support to him.

"I want to thank everyone for the support. Like I said during my nomination, External Affairs Minister and Gujarat have a natural partnership. There is no such country where there is no Gujarati. If the prestige of India has increased internationally, Gujarat has a role in it," Jaishankar said.
