Manchester United first team coach Benni McCarthy has revealed why Jadon Sancho refused to apologise to manager Erik ten Hag when the duo had a bust-up last season.McCarthy said Sancho came from the 'streets' and apologising would have meant accepting the accusations levelled by Ten Hag.
Hag had publically called out Sancho for his lack of intensity during the training. The statement came after the Dutch manager dropped Sancho from the game against Arsenal. Hours after Ten Hag's comments, Sancho released a social media post where he categorically denied the claims.
"I spoke to the manager and I said to him that you know the delicacy and I think Jadon feels that if he apologises then he's going to be classed as someone who doesn't train hard, that doesn't work hard, who that everything that was said against him was true and if you are from the streets, no one wants to apologise," saidMcCarthy.
"You admit you are not training well, you are lazy, everything you are accused of. Jadon wasn’t going to have that. The manager just said that all he wants is an apology,' he further said.
The youngster's statement did not go down well with the former Ajax manager who made it clear that Sancho would only be integrated back with the squad if he apologises.
"I spoke to Jadon as a coach, as a mentor, as a friend, and as someone who grew up on the streets and knows the code. But Jadon just wasn’t seeing it. He said, 'I ain’t apologising because if I do, I’m apologising for being lazy, always being late, not giving my best. That’s what I’m apologising for', and those were his reasons".
United signed Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for a record fee of $100 million. At the time, Sancho was touted as one of the brightest stars on the horizon. However, his failure to adjust to the pace of the league brought him excessive criticism from fans and critics alike.
Sancho's fallout with Ten Hag meant that the Englishman did not get game time with United and had to depart to Dortmund on a loan deal. Since arriving in Germany, Sancho has got his mojo back and fired Dortmund to UEFA Champions League final. Meanwhile Ten Hag's job remains under scrutiny.
United are expected to take a decision about Sancho's contract in the summer with the forward hoping to stay in Germany for another year.
