Joker director Todd Phillips might not make another sequel

Still from Joker 2 trailer

Will there be other Joker sequels? Director Todd Phillips has something to say about the future of theJoker franchise, ahead of the release of Joker: Folie à Deux.

In talks with Variety, Todd Phillips admitted that he is ready to move on from the character of Joker after this scheduled release which features Joaquin Phoenix as Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. With Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd has returned to direction and has also co-written the screenplay of the sequel.

Casting doubts on a probably third film in the franchise, Todd Phillips said, “It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies. [B]ut I think we've said what we wanted to say in this world.”

But Joker was never supposed to be more than a single film. Before the release of the 2019 hit film, Todd Phillips intended Joker to be a standalone film. In an interview with Empire Magazine, he said that he pitched the film to WB executives with the suggestion to “begin a new division called DC Black."

So can we expect a third Joker film?

While Todd Phillips isn’t sure he will work on a third Joker film, there is still hope for fans of the franchise because the director had raised doubts before too and ended up still going ahead with the second film which will be released this year.

Before the confirmation of the sequel, the director went back and forth about the need for it. He also clarified in August 2019 that it will also depend upon Joaquin Phoenix if he would be interested in reprising his roles or not.

So we might not get a third Joker film if Joaquin backs out from the franchise.

About Joker: Folie à Deux

The new Joker film sequel is set two years after the events of the first film and will pick up the story where Phoenix’s character Arthur Fleck akaJoker is admitted as a patient at Arkham State Hospital. The plot will focus on his relationship with Harleen “Leen” Quinzel/Harley Quinn who is a musical therapist who will be played by Lady Gaga.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in theatres on October 4, 2024.
