With more than a series win on the line - a spot in the WTC Final 2025 being the ultimate goal, Australia must push hard to win the remaining two Tests at the MCG and SCG, respectively, and for that, they must play their best cricket right from the top to see results going their way. However, neither McSweeney nor the 38-year-old Usman Khawaja has succeeded, barring the first innings in Adelaide, where the newcomer impressed under the lights.
Losing wickets upfront cost Australia big time in three Tests as despite the schedule, formed to put India on the back foot from game one, the hosts find themselves nowhere near a commanding position. In an effort to put all that to rest, the selectors took some harsh calls, including dropping McSweeney and replacing him with uncapped Konstas. 
"Nathan McSweeney has been dropped. I can't believe that," Michael Clarke said on the Beyond 23 Cricket podcast. 
"No matter who they picked in that opening position, they had to give them the series. I think the selectors have got this wrong."
"We've got Usman Khawaja, who is 38 years old, and he's made no runs. He's a senior player. We've got Marnus Labuschagne, who, before the series was under pressure and has made one decent score. Steve Smith batted like a genius to make a hard-fought hundred, but he's also been under pressure. Everyone apart from McSweeney is over 30 years of age, some in their high 30s,” the ex-Aussie skipper pointed out.
<h2>Khawaja’s position worries Clarke</h2>
Clarke knows Khawaja isn’t around for more than a year and sounds worried about the opening chaos once he departs. Speaking on the same lines, Michael said though he wishes the best for the left-hander, wanting him to score runs and hundreds and contribute to the team’s success, he understands the scenario Australia would be in with two newcomers playing at the top.
"What happens if Usman Khawaja retires in two Test matches? Does McSweeney then come back in, or does he go to the back of the queue? They've got to come out and say, ‘We made a mistake picking him,'" Clarke said.
On Konstas, Clarke said, “I hope he walks out there, lives his dream; makes a hundred on debut. Something like that would be amazing.” 
Meanwhile, with the five-match series tied at 1-1 after three Tests, all eyes will be on the remaining two, with the Boxing Day Test starting on December 26.

After the third Test between India and Australia ended in a draw at The Gabba, Brisbane, Australia captain Pat Cummins defended the side's top three's poor returns.
In the post-match presser, he said, "Obviously they [the top three] would be hoping to score more runs, we'd like them to score more runs, but I think they have made some important contributions that others have benefited from."
While Cummins praised McSweeney for his temperament, the selectors have moved on from the latter for the remainder of the BGT edition.
All eyes are now on Konstas to take up the challenge at the top of the order.
The right-hander has 736 runs across formats this summer in the domestic circuit. He also scored a blistering 107 off 97 balls, at the Manuka Oval, Canberra, during the two-day warm-up match between India and the Prime Minster's XI.

“I think the PCB took the sensible approach, and instead of doing something rash and facing isolation in the ICC and among other cricket nations, it opted for a solution where I think the PCB has gained more than the BCCI,” Miandad said, as quoted by the Indian Express.&nbsp;

“Still, Pakistan is hosting a big event after a very long time, and we have sent a clear message that if you don’t come and play in our country, we will also not play in India,” the former batting great noted.

Meanwhile, upon deciding the neutral venue for the upcoming tournament, which will host all India matches, preferably Dubai, the ICC will announce the much-awaited schedule for the tournament.&nbsp;

Per earlier reports, February 19 to March 9, 2025, is the proposed window for this ICC event.&nbsp;

Though it has its challenges, the ICC and the host country would pick the neutral venue, considering security, logistics and other parameters. This approach ensures the participation of all teams regardless of their political situations while maintaining ICC events’ competitive integrity.
Meanwhile, in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 case, India will play all its matches, including against host Pakistan and the knockouts, should they qualify, at a neutral venue, preferably Dubai, with Pakistan playing its games at home.
“The ICC Board has approved that all matches between India and Pakistan played at ICC Events during the current rights cycle from 2024 to 2027 (which are to be hosted in India or Pakistan) will be played at a neutral venue proposed by the tournament host,” an ICC statement read. 
The hybrid model will be adopted for the Champions Trophy 2025 (in Pakistan), 2025 Women’s World Cup (in India) and 2026 T20 World Cup (in India and Sri Lanka). While India will play its matches at a neutral venue every time Pakistan gets to host an ICC event, the Men in Green will also not travel to India for any tournament. Dubai Cricket’s apex body, the ICC, announced a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled originally in Pakistan during the February-March window next year. However, with the BCCI’s refusal to send its team to Pakistan for the eight-team tournament due to security concerns, the ICC adopted this model, which they earlier went ahead with during the 2023 Asia Cup. So, what is a hybrid model and how does it work? India and Pakistan will be part of all ICC tournaments scheduled till 2028, per the governing body’s latest statement. So, how would this be possible if India denies travelling across the border and playing their arch-rivals in their country? The ICC has cracked the code, indicating the sign of things to come in the current Future Tours Programme (FTP). Though it has its challenges, the ICC and the host country would pick the neutral venue, considering security, logistics and other parameters. This approach ensures the participation of all teams regardless of their political situations while maintaining ICC events’ competitive integrity. Meanwhile, in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 case, India will play all its matches, including against host Pakistan and the knockouts, should they qualify, at a neutral venue, preferably Dubai, with Pakistan playing its games at home. “The ICC Board has approved that all matches between India and Pakistan played at ICC Events during the current rights cycle from 2024 to 2027 (which are to be hosted in India or Pakistan) will be played at a neutral venue proposed by the tournament host,” an ICC statement read. The hybrid model will be adopted for the Champions Trophy 2025 (in Pakistan), 2025 Women’s World Cup (in India) and 2026 T20 World Cup (in India and Sri Lanka). While India will play its matches at a neutral venue every time Pakistan gets to host an ICC event, the Men in Green will also not travel to India for any tournament.
